The Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia has over 70 years of history. In the beginning of 2007 a group of four mechanical engineering students began designing a Baja type of car as part of a subject called “Mechanical Engineering Design” under the guidance of Professor Diego Florez. The main focus of the design is to build an all-around vehicle capable of having a good performance in all the events of the competition. That’s why a four gear gearbox, CVT and chain reduction will be used. The vehicle will have independent suspension in all four wheels. A fast ratio rack and pinion steering system will be used along with disk brakes in all four wheels.
The team is sponsored by several important enterprises in the city of Medellin, such as Incolomotos Yamaha, Autosura, Sofasa, the University, and many more.
Our main goal for this year’s competition will be to not get disqualified, and if we manage to accomplish it, our goal would be to finish the endurance event. This will be the first time in the history of our university that a team is taking part in an event of such magnitude, and it may well be the first time a Colombian team will participate.

Baja SAE USB Team is an academic project who has represented the Simón Bolívar University and Venezuela in the Baja SAE Series. We have been competing 3 consecutive years, achieving our best participation last year in Montreal, reaching the 14th/121 position and making design finals for first time.
The principal goal of the team is to form integrated professionals by the philosophy of “Learning by Making It”. Based on this concept, students made a prototype light, versatile, easy to repair and for mass production. This year, we are building our 4th prototype and we aspire to improve the achievements reached by our partners in the last competition.
Some of the improvements that can be seen in the Baja USB 2009 prototype are: reduction of the sprung and unsprung mass, a new steering and suspension geometry, building our own gearbox, building a custom dynamometer to get the best CVT configuration, building our own hubs, brake calipers and rotors, developing a modular electronic CAN web, capable to acquire any kind of data.

The Baja SAE team Université Laval Alérion is now 18 years old. After a season where most of the members were new in the project, this year’s team is more experienced; most of the 20 students composing the team were in Illinois and Montréal last year, so we are now ready to get our first top ten this year in Oregon and Wisconsin.
The 2009 design is completely new. This year’s philosophy: fast and light! We’ll be on the track with a smaller and lighter frame, a new custom gearbox and CVT, new suspension geometry and especially, no handlebar. With our more experienced team, we’ll be even faster and well prepared for all races! Watch out!
Alérion team is also host of L’Épreuve du Nord, a winter competition of Baja SAE, which takes place at Université Laval. Last February, 16 vehicles competed in the snow of Québec City where everybody had a lot of fun.

Utah State University has a rather extensive history with the SAE Baja competition, from which this year’s team of 15 seniors looks to improve on their experience and make some improvements. To achieve a top standing, our biggest emphasis was on maximizing the performance of our CVT. Major improvements were done on the dynamometer making it possible to simulate the weight and inertia of the vehicle, thus making it possible to achieve the best ratio of torque and horsepower.
A new approach went into this year’s design of the rear suspension by using a leaf spring. The use of a leaf spring relieved some of the weight by reducing such components as shocks, upper control arm and struts. Testing of the leaf spring on this year’s vehicle has proved the design to be beneficial.
While this team has worked hard to make this year’s Baja a reality, it could not have been accomplished without the help from our many sponsors of the community of Logan. An even greater thank you goes to our faculty advisor, Dr. Haycock. His knowledge and help throughout this year has been insurmountable.

Jabaaz in Persian means Fearless. This is exactly what this team from VIT University epitomizes. They don’t care about reputations and are determined to succeed. Everyone in the team has a single-minded goal of proving to the world the real capabilities of Indian Engineering. They are the only Indian team at this event. The team has vast experience in SAE organized events. Team Jabaaz was the winner of the Virtual Baja competition organized by SAE India, thereby proving its Numero Uno status in India. However challenges come easily to the fearless. The team took upon the task of competing and testing itself against an International field at the Baja SAE Oregon.
Everyone on the team has a well-defined role and major decision making is done democratically. The reason behind the happy faces of the teammates is a tendency to gel with each other and enjoy each other’s success. The Team Captain, Abhishek Jha, is the Mechanical Engineering topper at VIT and is a storehouse of technical knowledge. It’s his unending desire for perfection that is the major driving force for Team Jabaaz. Buoyed by their Success at the Indian event the team wants to take it a notch higher and be victorious.

The 2009 Virginia Tech Baja team consists of 16 senior mechanical engineers, 6 independent studies, and 5 active volunteers. The team was formed in 1984 and has placed top ten in SAE competitions eight times, including a third place finish at Tennessee last year. This year, the team concentrated on making components easier to manufacture and utilizing a new front and rear suspension design. The drivetrain team has selected a motorcycle-style chain tensioning system-axial displacement-which should improve efficiency in the system. The team utilized FEA to test the majority of drivetrain and suspension components before manufacturing began. In addition, a dynamic FEA was completed to develop a better understanding of the loading apparent during a jump or sudden impact. The team is competing in the Winter Baja event in Michigan and the Alabama SAE competition. Because each vehicle at Virginia Tech builds upon the lessons learned from previous years, this year’s team has made a specific effort to involve and instruct the younger members of the team. We feel that this will help us assure our future as a well functioning team with competitive, well designed Baja SAE vehicles.

VWCC Motorsports is a student organization at Virginia Western Community College comprised of college freshmen and sophomores. The team has always placed first among community colleges when it competes, but it had the privilege of placing fifty-first overall last year in the Montreal competition. This year, the Virginia Western team is redesigning and rebuilding its car in the hopes of again contending with four year universities in Wisconsin at the SAE Baja Competition. Our team has redesigned the suspension to include independent swing arms for increased durability and travel and added a manual transmission to increase the torque and top speed without ruining our acceleration. The hope of this year’s team is to use MSC software to test the limits of the vehicle before rebuilding it by running computer simulations on a designed course. To keep one student from being overwhelmed with the organization of our team and to ensure that school comes first, the hierarchy of VWCC Motorsports starts with three managers. From there, the members of the team were broken up into groups based the front suspension, rear suspension, and transmission.

For the 2009 event, our Baja vehicle is completely redesigned. We incorporated a CVT to fit our Briggs & Stratton motor and added a 2-speed Polaris transmission with a direct chain drive to our solid rear axle. The drive train combination gives us a maximum amount of torque at all speeds. The suspension consists of the front end of an ATV with a single custom swing arm in the back. Coil-over shocks are utilized around. Our goal was to minimize weight as much as possible while being able to reach a high top speed.

The 2009 race season has brought many changes to the WSU Baja Team. The first change is adding a ton of new members. These new members bring just that many more great ideas to the team. Starting out to design the car, the team took on the mind set of simple but strong, just about everything has been completely redesigned. Starting with the frame, everything has been made simpler, easier to build, and stronger. However this doesn’t come free. There are always trade offs and weight is one of the biggest challenges as we go for this simple design.
