United-4 a Cure 31st Annual Dinner Dance a Huge Success!
The 31st Annual Riviera / United-4 a Cure Dinner-Dance was held on Saturday, February 23rd and it was, once again, very successful. $99,800.00 was raised on
the evening, putting the total since the beginning at almost $ 2.3 million in the fight against cancer. This event was again completely underwritten by the Riviera
and Pinnacle Custom Homes so that means that all the proceeds from ticket sales, ad book, raffle, silent auction, donations and club events went directly to the
cancer research recipients.
Many of the 270 attendees danced the night away to the music of Jimmy O and Rhonda in the Lakeview room and Emcee Squared in the Waterford room. Others
watched their bids on items in the silent auction while having a few laughs with friends.
Next year’s 32nd Annual United-4 a Cure Dinner Dance will be on February 15th so start talking to your friends about it and put it on your calendars now.
More About the Dinner Dance An Interesting Silent Auction
Each year we have about 50-75 items donated to be auctioned off , and raffled for the United-4 a
Cure Dinner Dance. This is one of the largest sources of funds to be granted to our recipients. And
it’s no wonder too, given some of the items we get each year. Here’s a list of some of the more
interesting Silent Auction items that the attendees were bidding on this year.
• 7-Day stay at a 3 bedroom Paradise Villa in Aruba with a pool, jacuzzi & a large BBQ Grill.
• 7-Day stay at a 2 bedroom condo with an adjoining studio unit overlooking the pool and Sea of
Cortez at the 5 star Estancia Resort in Cabo San Lucas.
• Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks and Bears tickets and memorabilia
• Rolling Stones Tickets
2019 United-4 A Cure Recipients
The University of Chicago – The immune system, properly functioning, has a number of mechanisms for
detecting and attacking cancerous cells – and tumors, in turn, have a range of defenses. Dr. Randy
Sweis’ research focuses on discovering key factors that affect immunotherapy success and defining new
strategies for overcoming tumor defenses, especially cancer of the bladder and kidney.
University of Hawaii – As a continuation of last year’s study, Dr. Haining Yang will continue to identify
additional genes that predispose individuals to malignant mesothelioma. Having already discovered the
novel cancer syndrome named BAP1 that predisposes people to Malignant Mesothelioma, Melanoma and
possibly other cancer types, Dr. Yang and her team believe there are one or more genes that, when
mutated in the germline, increase the susceptibility to these cancers as well. Once identified, they can be
targeted with personalized therapies. If successful, this study will increase the number of early diagnoses,
long term survivors and quality-adjusted life years among patients,
Mayo Clinic – Two studies related to brain tumor treatment – 1) Cognitive impairment is a common side
effect of brain tumor radiation therapy where senescent cells induce the tissue impairment. Dr. Terrence
Burns and his team strive to make radiation safer and more effective through senolytic therapy which will
reverse radiation-induced cognitive deficits and slow residual tumor cells. 2) Convection Enhanced
Delivery (CED) catheters can directly administer chemotherapy to brain tumors, through the blood barrier,
without causing short and long term damage to health brain tissue. Dr. David Daniels’ study will
determine which chemotherapeutic agents are particularly effective when delivered via CED
Instrumentation.
Loyola University Chicago – One of the most significant recent advances in the field of myeloma is the
ability to detect minimal/measurable residual disease (MRD). It has allowed for a much more sensitive
means of detecting response to therapy and disease status overall in order to make dosage adjustments.
Dr. Patrick Hagen’s study will compare the sensitivity of three assessment types in order to determine the
most practical.
The Conversation Hearts were a pure hit! The size tricked many people into thinking there
were more than what it truly was. Luckily John Galloway, went with his gut! The count was
586. John won with his guess of 580! John was a lucky winner of a free adult guest pass !
Congrats John!
Thank you to all who participated!

Zach, one of our managers, held a free health seminar in February in the spin room! It was a huge success! We had several interested
members, some new and some veterans show up and find out “Why Lifting Weights at an Older Age” is still important! Members
found the class to be very informative!

A Note from Lexi— UPDATE on the Twins
Colin and Evan are both doing well, getting stronger and gaining weight. They are up to 7.5 pounds. They both just started to smile
in the last week. They are the best little guys - they love drinking milk and being held. They do not like sleeping, which is the only
problem!
