• In 1981, the CDC identified the mysterious virus as HIV– They indicated that HIV patients were guaranteed

to develop AIDs over time

• America still turned their back on the virus because of the controversy it created

• Antiretroviral therapy: slows down the development of HIV drastically

• As of January 2012, SAV001 has been approved by the FDA to start testing– Researchers are hopeful that this vaccine will

prevent HIV negative people from contracting the virus
