The Northwest Territory includes the lands west of the Pennsylvania and east of the

Mississippi River, it was divided into townships and sold to settlers, and included the lands north of the Ohio River and south of the Great Lakes. It was not however the

first area where the French built settlements.

Territory to better plan for the settlement of the territory.

The Great Lakes formed as a result of glaciers.

The Illinois Waterway and the Illinois River connect Lake

Michigan with the Mississippi River.

Steel mills were built along the Great Lakes because both iron

ore and coal were found in nearby states.

Most manufactured goods today are made on assembly lines.

A keelboat, steamboat, and barge could travel upstream against a river's current. A

flatboat could not.
