What does the Variable (letter) Represent?

Solving Equations is like Balancing a Scale. Your Goal is to find the number for “x” that will keep the scale

balanced.The Answer will be the SOLUTION

What Value for “X” will keep this scale balanced?

Step 1: Isolate the variable (get the variable alone)

Remember that you must do the samething to both sides to keep it balanced

Step 2: Find the Solution.

x + 2 = 6-2 -2X = 4

ONE STEPEQUATION

How many steps do you think it will take to solve this equation?

6 10x

INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK TIME

The goal is to isolate the Variable (Get the letter alone).

A. Circle the Term with theVariable

C. Undo the coefficient of the Variable

Term by undoing with multiplication/division.

.

B. Get the Variable Term alone by undoing with addition/subtraction

-8 -8x = -5

+ 5 + 5 x = 7

-4 -4x = -5

7 7

x = -28

x = 18

YOU TRY IT!

4. 3p = 18

3. 14 = m + 9

1. x + 2 = 10

6. 4 e = 8 3

5. n = 4 5

2. x – 8 = 12

TWO STEPEQUATION

How many steps do you think it will take to solve this equation?

2 6 10x

The goal is to isolate the Variable (Get the letter alone).

A. Circle the Term with the Variable

C. Undo the coefficient of the Variable

Term by undoing with multiplication/division.

B. Get the Variable Term alone by undoing with addition/subtraction

+8 +8 5x = 205 5

X = 4

-6 -6x3 = -103 3

X = -30

YOU TRY IT!

4. 3p - 6 = 18

3. 14 = 5m + 9

1. 4x + 2 = 10

6. 4 e - 2 = 2 3

5. n + 1 = 4 5

2. -8 + 10x = 12

LET’S TRY A PROBLEM IN CONTEXT

Hmwk # 28 Last week Amy ran 31 miles more than Ryan. Amy ran 40 miles. How many miles did Ryan run?

1. What are you trying to find out?

3. Set up an equation and solve to find the answer

A = R + 31 We know that A= 40 so…

2. What is your Variable? R

How many miles Ryan ran.

40 = R + 31-31 -319 = R

Ryan ran 9 miles

-1 + n = 1 3

Let’s go back to our “I can” statement and solve it with our new skills.
