Marketing an Efficiency-Increasing Genset Add-On Marketing an Ultra-Efficient Genset Demonstrating low-cost Diesel-Electric Propulsion
Year 1: EV Testbed
Complete TRL-6 UMIC Complete EV Testbed Performance Testing 15 kW & 150 kW GenMate
Year 2: DE Bus
Build TRL-7 UMIC Build TRL-7 PDM Integrate as Diesel-Electric Bus Performance Testing
Year 3: DE 70’ Boat
Build TRL-8 UMIC Build TRL-8 PDM Integrate as Diesel-Electric Boat Performance Testing Demonstration in Alaska!
Emerging Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technologies have lowered the cost and
increased the power density!
Flexible topology can control any load Power modules are stackable Programmable for diverse applications Low cost – high power density! State-of-the-art components
Proof-of-Concept TRL-5 TRL-6
Fighter plane avionics systems Tokomak fusion reactors The Curiosity Mars probe Actually, no FPGA, but uses the
same real-time operating system as the sbRIO
Control of a variety of motor types Full load testing of PDM technology GenMate application with active neutral High Efficiency genset with PDM head AFE / Power conditioning techniques
This TRL-6 Controller will be able to test the
following features:
Controller Unit: $6,000 400V 120kW layer: $4,000 Total: $10,000 Initial Cost per Watt: $0.09 Each additional layer: $0.04
Uses standard 3-phase motors Low cost, fast conversion method Up to 8X continuous power gain Proprietary technique – no rewinding needed
Proof-of-Concept TRL-5 TRL-6
Uses existing, low cost, serviceable motor Modification very low cost Low voltage compatible with 480V systems and common marine grade wire 8X horsepower gain Multiple applications: Efficient Genset, Full Diesel-Electric Propulsion, Electric Vehicles
Total < $650
Input to inverter: 120 VAC Effective output to motor: 240 VAC Original RPM rating: 1760 RPM Tested bench RPM: 4083 RPM Output Freq. for this test: 140 Hz
A standard diesel generator must operate at a fixed RPM to produce 60 Hz power.
However, the engine’s most efficient RPM varies depending on the load!
Standard Gensets waste 30% to 50% of fuel because of this mismatch!
The GenMate maintains 60 Hz power while varying the engine RPM to match the power load.
Comprises one or more UMIC modules Can connect to any existing genset One GenMate can convert all onboard Gensets!
IEEE experimental study proves 40% efficiency increase Proven increase peak power up to 25% Higher quality power No similar products are available
Great for widely varying loads ROI within a year for many applications Low-risk, low installation costs Scalable for any power system Product line starting at 100 kW
Our target markets are Alaskan fishing boats, rural village, and remote industrial power.
The GenMate can also be used to stabilize speed and regulate output for hydro-power and wind
applications.
Here is Rob and his 65 kW Genset.
Very large Exposed to corrosion, dirt, and oil Diode ring failure Regulator failure Coil burnout Difficult to service or replace Material intensive High cost ~$7000 for generator head alone
Like all standard Gensets, it is:
Sealed unit Oil cooled No rotating windings or diodes No exciter stage Much smaller!
Replacing the open-frame, air-cooled generator head with a PDM has many advantages.
Case Length: 2’ Power: 65 kW
Case Length: 1’ Power: 150 kW
Real-Estate and power are a premium on fishing boats!
Smaller genset size / kW Extremely rugged generator head Can utilize a modern, high efficiency diesel Units are parallel ready Drop-in replacement for existing gensets
