Tungsten HCal: Single Section Analysis

Initial results of improved structural integrity due to Tungsten plates

Niall O Cuilleanain (Supervisor: H. Gerwig)

Model 1 (steel structure only): The Tungsten plates are represented by point masses- ‘dead weight’.

Model 2 (both steel structure & the connected Tungsten plates):Here we see a symmetrical half of a module of the Tungsten HCal.

Both models are supported at the section’s external face (3 or 9 o’clock position), and under Standard Gravity.

Conclusions- Main points

• The modulus of elasticity of the pure Tungsten plates were underestimated

E=350GPa, as opposed to E= c. 400GPa.

• The analyses must be redone with bolted rather than welded connections, which will inherently give smaller reductions.

• The presence of the brackets between each plate must be considered.

• These are promising initial results.

Where next?• After the single section analysis, I wish to compare the 2 models of the entire HCal structure, in order to analyze the reductions given;

i.e. Model 1 (including the point masses), and Model 2 (including the actual Tungsten plates), as we have seen here.

• How can we improve the structural integrity?

Other current analyses

• Crane support of a single section: -where best to support a single section? -how much does it deform in each case?

• Single Tungsten plate (12mm):-what deformations are produced when the

plate is supported in different ways & at different points?
