SRIHARIKOTA (AP), Sept 28:

Joining an elite group ofnations, India today successful-ly launched its first spaceresearch observatoryASTROSAT that will help in adetailed understanding of theuniverse and also put into orbitsix foreign satellites includingthe first from the US.

Taking another major step inits ambitious and low-cost spaceprogramme, ISRO's trustedworkhorse Polar SatelliteLaunch Vehicle (PSLV), in its31st flight, injected ASTROSATand the six co-passengers intoorbit about 25 minutes after aperfect lift-off from the SatishDhawan Space Centre here.

Launched in its maidenattempt, ASTROSAT, whichincludes a telescope that uses x-ray, has been dubbed as a mini-Hubble telescope launched byUS' NASA in 1990 and a one-stop shop for studying astro-nomical sources. So far, onlythe US, Japan, Russia andEurope have launched a spaceobservatory.

"Well done @isro. This isone more grand accomplish-ment for Indian science & ourscientists," Prime MinisterNarendra Modi, who is now ona visit to the US, said in a tweet.

Declaring the launch suc-cessful amid cheers from theassembled scientists, a beamingISRO Chairman A S KiranKumar said PSLV had put in anastronomy mission which isbeing looked at not only withinthe country but also globally tobring in new information to sci-entific community.

"I congratulate the entireISRO community for the won-derful job they have done," hesaid addressing the gathering atthe Mission Control Centre.ASTROSAT has reportedly costUSD 27 million to build.

It was for the first time thatIndia launched US satellites--fourin all--belonging to a SanFrancisco-based company, underan agreement signed with AntrixCorporation Ltd, the commercialarm of Indian Space ResearchOrganisation (ISRO).

With a lift-off mass of about1,513 kg, ASTROSAT was firstinjected into a 650 km orbit byPSLV-C30, followed by theother six satellites in the spaceof about three minutes.

International customer satel-lites that piggybacked the polrrocket were the LAPAN-A2 ofIndonesia meant for maritime sur-veillance using AutomaticIdentification System (AIS), andmaritime monitoring nanosatellitefrom Canada, NLS-14 (Ev9),which uses 'next generation' AIS.

The rocket, one of world's

most reliable launch vehicleswhich clocked its 30th success-ful mission in a row today, also

carried four identical LEMURnano satellites of a Spire GlobalInc., San Fransisco, US, thatwere non-visual remote sensingsatellites 'focusing primarily on

maritime intelligence throughvessel tracking via' the AIS,ISRO said.

With this, a total of51 satellites belonging toglobal customers from20 countries, includingGermany, France, Japan,Canada, U.K, have beenlaunched successfully byISRO so far.

Post the successfulinjection of ASTROSATinto the orbit,ASTROSAT ProjectDirector K S Sarma saidit was "healthy anddoing well". It has a mis-sion life of five years.

"This satellite is veryunique as we havesophisticated and sensi-tive astronomical equip-ment", he added.

ASTROSAT willobserve the universe inoptical, ultraviolet lowand high energy X-rayregions of the electro-magnetic spectrum, while most other scien-tific satellites are capa-ble of observing a nar-

row range of wavelength band.It will send back data and studyparts of the universe includingblack holes and the magneticfields of stars. (PTI)
