ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

TRUDY MONTGOMERY’s tendency towards enormous scale and pure, bold colour is heavily influenced by the light and space of California, where she lived for 14 years.

Trudy draws inspiration from her travels, both inner and outer, and sees her work as inner landscapes or ‘dreamscapes’.

Working from a meditative state of action, Trudy uses the expressive possibilities of paint to convey what is, so often, inaccessible in words. Joyful and uplifting, her paintings portray an active vitality and the freedom of spirit.

Trudy’s work has been exhibited internationally including in the UK, Germany, India and California and is represented by galleries in London and Los Angeles.

INNER LANDSCAPES

Georgia O’Keefe, celebrated American artist (1887-1986), said that “the abstract is often the purest form for me to express the inexpressable.”

For me, this holds true. Abstraction defies our often compulsive urge to identify, label and describe everything we see in an attempt to ‘know’ it and thereby eliminate uncertainty. And yet, life is ultimately unknowable - and its very mystery is what makes it so magical.

As an abstract painter I dwell in a place of not knowing, which I experience as freedom. Working from a meditative state of action, I draw on inner vision and the expressive possibilities of paint to convey what is, so often, inaccessible in words.

Although abstract, my work is primarily concerned with the sacred feminine and its relationship to the sacred masculine. The feminine is associated with nurturing, Mother Earth and the source of life, fertility, reproduction and beauty while its paired opposite, the masculine, references strength, power, focus and virility.

In exploring this duality, I seek to capture a moment of dynamic balance in which a state of harmony or union, however fleeting, may be reached. 

One of the hallmarks of my Union paintings is the wide angle ‘V’ or ‘U’, a gestural abstract symbol I am compelled to include. A strong vertical line often grounds this feminine shape and refers to the masculine. These forms may be held within a ‘landscape’ as referenced by a horizon line, which itself provides a structural element in the composition. As these shapes evolve, the horizon line is tipped or altogether absent. Multiple viewpoints of the landscape may arise, often w i t h i n a s i n g l e p a i n t i n g , s o m e t i m e s encompassing a birds-eye view of an aerial landscape or a cross-section through the landscape.

In other work, portals into a world beyond the canvas take shape and with them a sense of being in a dream-state or at the threshold of another realm beyond. A glimpse, perhaps, of the unknowable?
