IGNATION DISCERNMENT AND THE JESUIT VOCATION BY NICHOALS REED, SHS ‘18
“Being accepted to the Jesuit Novitiate of Saint Stanislaus Kostka for the United States Central and Southern Province Jesuits has brought much grace, joy, and consolation. After a few long months of intense prayer and application, I am eager and excited to embark on the journey of a
lifetime of prayer, community, and mission. Not only will I be joining an Order that has contributed to much of the foundation and establishment of the dioceses in Southern Louisiana, but a band of brothers that are dedicated to each other, others, and the way of life instituted by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. My discernment for this decision revolved around encounter and prayer. Over the past three years, I have attended a number of retreats that are sponsored by the Jesuits, met many Jesuits in our province who are in different stages formation who have come from around the U.S. and the world, and I have prayed very intently and carefully with the help of my Jesuit Spiritual Director. In the next few months, I will become a novice for the Society of Jesus for two years in preparation for Vows. In the Novitiate, I will be getting a foretaste of Jesuit life and community by living with other novices and older Jesuits, undergoing the Spiritual Exercises (the thirty day silent retreat), two eight day retreats, a pilgrimage, and experiments that involve teaching, caring for the poor and neglected, and Spanish immersion. Most of my time as a novice will be spent away from Grand Coteau as I work around the country and, even, the world. After the Novitiate, I will then begin my First Studies out of state that will include Philosophy, liberal arts, and any other degree, God-willing.
It has been a tremendous blessing to be accepted and I can not thank God, my family, and my friends who have supported me in this discernment and decision. Please know of my prayers and blessings for you all, and please pray for me. Pax!” What a beautiful testimony of the TRUE meaning of the goals and values that Sacred Heart strives daily to teach. Our hearts are full and Nick will be in our daily prayers.
