TALL TALE CONTEST NEEDS
SUBMISSIONS...
2011 FESTIVAL OF THE
ARTS WRITING CONTESTENCOURAGES LOCAL
AUTHORS
From Staff ReportsBIG RAPIDS For MecostaCountys aspiring fibbers, exaggerators and embellishers, the 2011 Festival of the Arts has anutlet that could bring the winnerame beyond their wildest dreams.he idea behind the Tall Tale contest
was to have an outlet for peopleswriting, said event sponsor BrianPacholka. The contest is open toeveryone. Stories must be between1,500 and 2,500 words and mustbe the original, fictional work of theauthor.Theres not a lot of outlets (in thecommunity) for peoples writing, hesaid. The top six to 10 authors will beinvited to read their stories atPeppers Cafe and Deli on Feb. 7.I like the idea of the tall tale,Pacholka said. Just try to keep itrelatively short.Stories must include MecostaCounty in some way, Pacholkasaid, whether it is set in MecostaCounty or it has a character whois from Mecosta County or any tieto the county. The contest featuresa $250 cash prize for the Best
tory Winner. There also will bePeoples Choice Trophy to the
tory who gets the most votes fromhe audience during the reading atPeppers.Deadline for submissions is 5 p.m.n Jan. 22. Story submission may
e published in a book producedy the Festival of the Arts board bututhors will retain all rights to theirork. The 2011 Festival of the Artsegins on Jan. 27.he idea came as a brainchild of
Leadership Mecosta, Pacholkaaid. After he and fellow Leadershiptudent, Candy Allan, were talkinguring the 2010 Festival of the Arts, hey came up with the idea to hold
contest during the next yearsvent. Its just the idea that we do all sorts
f different arts but Festival of Artsdidnt) use the written word as anrt form, Pacholka said. Its allbout the story.tories will be judged by a five-erson panel made up of Pacholka, llan, Lynne Scheible, Cathyohnson and one more judge.
However, judges will only be lookingt the story as whole and will not beitpicking for English mistakes suchs grammar or spelling, Pacholkaaid.
All I want is the story, he said.
Pacholka encourages peopleo enter the contest. As a self-
proclaimed failed artist, he said thepoint of art is not to make a timelesspiece to hang at the Louvre but tohave an outlet for creativity.
I screw up more art than anybody Iknow, Pacholka said. I dont evencare. Its just doing the art thatsimportant to me.In the end, art is a way to stretchout the metaphorical muscles of thesoul, Pacholka said.I always say: You have the gym
to exercise the body, he said. Youhave the library to exercise themind. You have the arts to exercisethe soul. For more information or to submit astory may do so by e-mailing brian_
pacholka@yahoo.com.
FINDING A NATURAL FIT FOR
YOUR LOCATION
(NAPSI)-For many manufacturersand entrepreneurs, finding theright location for their businessmeans more than square footageand reasonable costs. Its aboutlocationliterallybecause thelocation is a natural fit for theirbusiness.
For Mark Coffman, president ofLucky Bums, which makes technicaland functional gear for kids, thestate of Idaho is a perfect locationfor his business. We can field-testthe ski clothing with our own kids ona day trip to the ski resort or hikingand camping gear in the mountainsand rivers just a few minutes fromour headquarters, said Coffman, whose company is based in Boise. Here, you get urban efficiency withrural lifestyle.
Some companies need to considerwhether their location is a naturalfit for the type of products theyproduce. Surfboards designed inChina, for instance, wouldnt havethe credibility among aficionadosthat a label from Maui would have.
A number of outdoor-orientedcompanies have located in thenorthwestern state because of thevariety of its terrain and outdoorculture. Everything from fly-fishingpoles to ski goggles are designed,
tested and manufactured there, taking advantage of the naturallaboratory.
When does location matter? Outdoorequipment manufacturers in Idahocite these advantages to matchingtheir product to their companyslocation:
Credibility. The Scott Company, makers of ski equipment, started inSun Valley, the legendary ski resortknown for its luxury, killer slopes and
its appeal to the rich and famous. The company was launched in
1958 by Ed Scott, a ski racer andengineer. While the company hasgrown enormously with operationsaround the world, it maintains its
headquarters in Sun Valley.
Natural laboratory. SJX Jetboatsin Lewiston finds having the SnakeRiver right outside its office door abenefit. The company can easilytest its equipment on a river thatoffers both turbulent whitewater andshallow drafts.
Knowledgeable labor force. AtLucky Bums, employees live theoutdoor life, so they are familiarwith how the products will be used.
Employees will understand customerneeds on a personal level, so theycan be a more valuable resource tothe company.
Lower costs. Business costs candrop dramatically in a more ruralsetting, depending on the needs ofthe company. Buck Knives movedfrom San Diego to Post Falls,Idahoa move that enabled thecompany to move manufacturingback to the United States fromChina.

BEWARE OF GLARE FOR
SAFETY
(NAPSI)-Good vision is an essentialpart of driving safely, and more than90 percent of decisions and reactionsmade behind the wheel dependon it. While many believe a bright, sunny day is optimal for driving, thereality is that blinding glare fromsun, snow and vehicles can be asignificant contributing factor tofatal auto accidents. Additionally,a recent survey commissioned byEssilor of America, Inc., the worldleader in eyeglass lenses, revealedthe disturbing fact that 20 percent ofeyeglass wearers sometimes drivewithout their prescription glassesand instead wear nonprescriptionsunglasses, quickly making daydriving unnecessarily treacherous.
Glare Dangers
When driving, consider the followingtips to minimize dangers fromglare.
Drive carefully and keep a safedistance between your car and thecar ahead of you.
Keep your cars windshield clean.
Use the sun visor.
Rest your eyes and take frequent
breaks during sunny conditions.
Purchase a pair of polarized, prescription sunglasses if you wea
eyeglasses, as they cut the glarmuch more effectively than overthe-counter sunglasses.
The Importance Of PolarizedLenses
For blinding glare when driving, simple solutions abound in the formof polarized, prescription sunglasses. In fact, a clinical study conducted byEssilor as a precursor to the surveyfound that driver reaction timesimprove by one-third of a second fo
drivers who wear polarized lenses. For a car traveling 50 miles pehour, one-third of a second allowsdriver to stop 23 feet sooner, or thlength of an intersection. In glareintense situations, polarized lenses, improve vision clarity by 75 percent,as opposed to ordinary sun lenses, allowing wearers to enjoy betteclarity of vision.
Sixty percent of eyeglass wearersurveyed agree that when drivingduring the day, glare from sun
and snow makes it difficult to sewhile driving; however, those withprescription sunglasses, particularlthose with polarized lenseexperience less trouble. Currently, only one-third of eyeglass wearerhave prescription sunglasses withpolarized lenses, so its critical thaconsumers discuss with their eycare professionals the lifesavingbenefits of polarized, prescriptionsunglasses.

SAVE LIVES: PLEDGE TO NOT
DRINK AND DRIVE
(NAPSI)-If youre like 90 percenof drivers, you recognize that youpersonal safety is at risk because odrivers impaired by alcohol or othedrugs.
What The Numbers Show
Youve got good reason, as th
statistics indicate:
Every day, 32 people in the UnitedStates die in traffic crashes thainvolve an alcohol-impaired driver.
Alcohol-impaired drivers contributto about one out of every three traffideaths each year.
An average of one alcohoimpaired driving death occurs ever45 minutes.

A WELCOME ADDITION TO GREEN
BUILDING
(NAPSI)-With water costs rising
across much of the United Statesmore than 10 percent in two years, according to a recent surveyby the American Water Works
Associationbuilding a water-efficient home is a wise investmentin the future.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys (EPAs) WaterSenseprogram makes it easy to findbuilders who can construct a newhome that saves water, energy andmoney. More than 30 builders havepartnered with EPA to build more
water-efficient homes, and thatnumber is growing every day.
Just as it does for toilets, faucets, showerheads and other plumbingproducts, WaterSense offers alabel for water-efficient new homes, designed to use at least 20 percentless water than typical new homes, both inside and out.
In fall 2010, builder KB Homecompleted the first residencescertified to earn a label under theWaterSense new homes program. These homes, located nearSacramento in Roseville, California, will save 10,000 gallons of waterper year and more than $100 peryear on utility bills.
Owning a WaterSense-labeledhouse means you can enjoy allthe comforts of home while usingfewer natural resources and savingmoney, said Veronica Blette, chiefof EPAs WaterSense branch. Afamily investing in a WaterSense-labeled new home will save enoughwater each year to wash more thansix months worth of laundry andenough energy to power a televisionfor four years.
Like many other forward-thinkingconstruction companies across
the country, since teaming up withWaterSense earlier in 2010, KBHome, the first national builder t
join WaterSense, has committedto building new homes to EPAsWaterSense specification. EachWaterSense-labeled new homis independently inspected andcertified by a licensed certificationprovider to ensure it meets EPAswater-efficiency and performanccriteria.
WaterSense-labeled new homesfeature WaterSense-labeledplumbing fixtures, a hot watedelivery system that gets hot wateto the tap faster, efficient appliance(if included) and a water-efficient,easy-to-maintain landscape.
The EPA estimates that if thapproximately 500,000 new homebuilt last year had met WaterSenscriteria, the homes would sav
Americans 5 billion gallons of wateand more than $50 million in utilitbills annually.
