I t’s 5am on the Friday before the Transmoto 6-Hour, and as soon as I kick my overloaded ute in the guts, the radio grabs my attention. “Just repeating that there is a severe weather warning for much of NSW. The Bureau of Meteorology is advising residents to take all necessary precautions,” it says gravely, before veering off into a scintillating discussion about whether GST ought to be applied to tampons. I’m about to leave Sydney behind, bound for the rolling

grasslands of Gunns Gully, so the tail-end of this ominous weather report rattles me. It reminds me of the Bureau’s dire forecast three years ago, which caused us to delay the Transmoto 12-Hour for three long weeks.

Just as I manage to convince myself this storm will come and go and deliver just enough rain to ensure prime conditions for Sunday’s 6-Hour, the radio’s attention returns to the weather – which is now headlining news bulletins, not trailing them. “All roads through the Blue Mountains are currently closed. On the NSW South Coast, 150km/h winds have wrought extensive damage overnight. They’ve uprooted trees, blown the roofs off several houses and torn boats from their moorings, and they’re expected to intensify in the next 24 to 48 hours,” it continues, accompanied by a convoluted meteorological explanation of why the weather will remain ‘severe’ for three days.

This time, I convince myself that the “weather event” will be contained to the south coast and Blue Mountains ... conveniently missing Gunns Gully and the inaugural Transmoto 6-Hour. But the radio’s subsequent update knocks that denial on the head too: “In the state’s north, there have been widespread reports of property damage, and the SES has been stretched to breaking point. For the first time in 31 years, snow has fallen at Tenterfield on the Northern Tablelands. According to the Bureau, this is the most far-reaching severe weather warning it's issued for NSW in two decades.”

Right, then. This weather prognosis sure didn’t leave much wiggle-room for even the most naïve optimism, so I call Transmoto’s set-up crew for an on-ground update. “Mate, everything’s sweet up here,” Red Dog Robbie Warden tells me. “The track’s looking absolutely epic and the locals reckon we might dodge the worst of that wind and rain they’re forecasting. Then again, I’m just looking to the south now and the sky’s … well, it’s pretty much a menacing shade of grey-green. Drive safe, mate. See you soon.”

Our Event Manager’s update doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence, so I resign myself to the reality that the inaugural Transmoto 6-Hour is likely to be a tad wet. Little did any of us know the extent to which the conditions would deteriorate that weekend...
