As USC is an adult learning environment, Year 12 is the year to adopt a university style of learning.

Are you ready? www.uandu.com

www.providenceduluth.org

*It means that there is no set homework. Instead, you are advised of the work that needs to be completed for a unit of work i.e. Functions of the Law, along with a due date for completion. You work at your own pace dependent upon overall personal commitments; study, work and social life.

*The path ahead

*For those students who are keen to make a head start in Legal Studies you can do a number of things over the summer holiday break, which will prove useful to you during the coming year.

pathwaystolearningaba.wordpress.com

*Newspapers

*You are encouraged to start reading daily newspapers.

*Laws are changing all the time so that any textbook is out of date the moment it is written. To keep up with changes in the legal system during your study of the subject, you will be required to complete a legal update log, gaining your information from the daily newspapers.

techfate.blogspot.com

*What this means

*Now is a good opportunity, if you are not yet an avid newspaper reader, to commence. You will find that The Advertiser is a good source for advising State (local) changes, while The Australian provides more information on Federal and Australia-wide (other States) reform.

blog.thepitagroup.com

*Visit the Courts

*Another useful activity is to visit the Courts. As a member of the public, you are able to attend and observe the Magistrates, District or Supreme Courts. There are Enquiry Counters at each Court location where you can identify the nature of the cases being heard.

www.fedcourt.gov.au

*Finding your way

Sheriffs Officers can assist you with directions to the Courtrooms and give further advice on the stage that a trial is at e.g. prosecution evidence, summing up etc. Tell them that you are a legal studies student who is wanting to learn more.

The State Courts that you will visit during your studies are all located around Victoria Square, Adelaide.

www.abc.net.au

*Most Importantly

*Take your time through this exploration but also leave yourself plenty of time to have fun before the start of this very important, impending year.

*And take care of yourselves!

*Activity - Debate

*Child offenders should be exempted from South Australia's victims of crime levy, Child Protection Royal Commissioner Margaret Nyland says.

"The commission can see no benefit to victims of crime or the community more generally in burdening children and young people with large debts they can never repay"
