Dimensions
The outside diameter of a pipe is considered constant, for practical purposes, subject to the tolerances given.
PRESSURE RATINGS FOR SCREW THREADED ENDS FOR PLUMBING INSTALLATIONSThe nett wall thickness of a pipe determines the pressure rating. The wall thickness forfeited during threading must be taken into account. This is why the working pressure rating for medium and heavy pipes is considered to be the same.
PRESSURE RATING FOR HIGH PRESSURE INSTALLATIONSThe working pressure for plain ended pipes differs for medium and heavy pipes. The pressure rating for a screw threaded pipe is only considered the same as a plain ended pipe when a screwed on flange has been welded in place. The type of pipe joint will determine the strength, durability and life expectancy of a plain ended pipe system.

FITTINGS - Malleable Fittings to EN 10242
A comprehensive range of high quality pipe fittings manufactured to EN 10242 specifica-tions and distributed by Macsteel Trading branches across Southern Africa. Malleable pipe fittings are manufactured in Blackheart Malleable Iron from the finest materials available and comply in all respects with the requirements of EN 10242 ‘Standard specification for Malleable Cast Iron Pipe Fittings’.
These pipe fittings have beaded outlets up to 50mm and banded outlets over 50mm in size giving added strength where it is most required and the neatness of form of this beaded and banded adds to the appearance of the pipe line.
Fittings are screwed with taper male and female threads and this method is now acknowledged as being the best means of producing a satisfactory joint on pipe installations. (It enables the user to make a sound joint without excessive force which can lead to distortion of the pipe or fitting).
Pipe fittings are individually pressure tested to 5 bar air underwater.
All galvanised fittings are hot dip galvanised according to the best galvanising methods.
Malleable pipe fittings are suitable for working under pressures of up to 25 bar at 120°C.
All threads comply with ISO 7-1 standards.
Taper Male/female threads
All threads within the pipe fittings are fully engaged ensuring perfect joints without packing: only a small amount of joint compound needs to be used.

ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe
Specification: ASTM A312 seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipe.
Stipulation: This specification covers seamless and longitudinally welded austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service.
Note: When the impact test criterion for a low-temperature sevice would be 20J energy absorption of 0.38mm lateral expansion, some of the austenitic stainless steel grades covered in this specification are accepted by certain pressure vessel or piping codes without the necessity of conducting the actual test.
Examples: Grades 304, 304L and 347 are accepted by the ASME Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division I by the Chemical Plant and Refinery Piping Code. ANSI B 31.3 for service at temperatures as low as -250°C without qualification by impact tests. Other AISI stainless steel grades are usually accepted for service temperatures as low as -200°C without impact testing.
Testing: Impact testing may, under certain circumstances, be required. For example, materials with chromium or nickel content outside the AISI range and carbon content exceeding 0.10% are required to be impact tested under the rules of ASME Section VIII Division I only when service temperatures are lower than -45°C.
Grades: Grades TP 304H, TP 304N, TP 316H, TP 316N, TP 321H, TP 347H and TP 348H are modifications of Grades TP 304, TP 316, TP 321, TP 347 and TP 348. These grades are intended for high temperature service.
Additions: Optional supplementary requirements are provided for pipes where a greater degree of testing is desired. These supplementary requirements call for additional tests to be made and when desired, one or more of these may be specified in the order.
ASTM A358 Steel Alloy Pipe for High Temperature Service
Specification: ASTM A358 steel alloy pipe for high temperature service.
Stipulation: ASTM A358 covers electric fusion welded austenitic chromium-nickel alloy steel pipe suitable for corrosive or high temperature service.
Note: Although no restrictions are placed on the sizes of the pipe furnished under this specification, commercial practice commonly limits sizes not less than NPS 8. The dimensionless designator NPS (nominal pipe size) has been substituted for such traditional terms as ‘nominal diameter’, ‘size’, and ‘nominal size’.
Range: This specification covers 19 grades of alloy steel. The selection of the proper alloy and requirements for heat treatment should be at the discretion of the purchaser, dependent on the service conditions to be encountered.
Classes: Five classes of pipe are covered as follows: Class 1: Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be completely radiographed. Class 2: Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes. No radiography is required. Class 3: Pipe shall be single welded by processes employing filler material in all passes and shall be completely radiographed. Class 4: Same as Class 3 except that the weld pass exposed to the inside pipe surface may be made without the addition of filler metal. Class 5: Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be spot radiographed.
Additions: Supplementary requirements, covering provisions ranging from additional testing to formalised procedures for manufacturing practices, are provided.

Stipulation: This specification covers classes WP and CR. Class WP fittings are manufactured to the requirements of ANSI B 16.9, 16.11 or 16.28. They shall be capable of withstanding a test pressure prescribed in the specifications for the pipe with which the fitting is recommended to be used. Class CR fittings are manufactured according to MSS SP-43 and shall be capable of withstanding a test pressure based on the ratings in MSS SP-43. Tees fabricated using intersection welds shall be capable of passing a hydrostatic test based on 70% of the ratings in MSS SP-43. Fittings may be manufactured from blooms, billets, slabs, forging, bars, plates, seamless or welded pipe. Fittings shall be heat treated before machining. Fittings ordered as Class WP-S shall be of seamless construction. On fittings conforming to class WP-W, all welds made by the fitting manufacturer must be radiographed. Radiography is not required, however, if the fittings are made of welded pipe produced without the addition of filler material.
Note: In practice, fittings stocked under the designation ASTM A403 WP-W are spot-checked by means of radiography. The quality of the welds is guaranteed to meet the requirements in ASTM A403. Extra radiography can be performed at the customer’s request and cost. Class WP-WX fittings shall have all welds radiographed either prior to or after forming, whether the welds are made by the fitting manufacturer or the fittings are manufactured from welded pipes with or without the addition of filler metal. Fittings according to class CR do not require radiography. Hydrostatic testing is not required.
Additions: Each fitting shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name or trademark, the schedule number or pressure rating, steel grade, class and size. A certificate of compliance to the specification shall be the basis for approval.

0 = resistant - corrosion rate less than 100um/year.1 = partly resistant - corrosion rate 100um to 1000um/year.2 = non-resistant - corrosion rate more than 1000um/year.
The performance of 316 compared with other metals is shown in the following table. Corrosion rates are based on 10 years exposure.
Thermal Processing Resistance
a. Annealing Heat from 1010°C to 1120°C and cool rapidly in air or water. For best corrosion resistance ensure the final annealing temperature is above 1070°C.b. Stress Relieving Heat from 200°C - 400°C and air cool.C. Hot Working Initial forging and pressing 1150°C - 1260°C Finished temperature 900°C+ Upsetting operation finish 930°C - 980°C
All hotworking operations should be followed by annealing.
Note: Soaking times to ensure uniformity of temperature are up to 1.5 times that required for the same thickness of mild steel.
