With the seemingly only nice day of this track season for a
meet, the 5th and 6th grade track and field athletes relished in
the warm weather for some fun in the sun on the track, in
the pit and in the rink.
Despite having over 200 athletes registered for the 200m and
then another 200 plus registered field in the 100m we
managed to get every event in before dark, including the last
heat of the 4x1 as runners finished to the last rays of the
setting sun.
A big thank you to our starter Adam Tjeerdsma, our clerk
Melissa Dale and the awesome “Results
are Us” crew Jeff Morris and Bill
Courtney. Class of 78!

5 Good Minutes With Matt Frazier
The Kid is Having Himself a Season!
8th grader Matt Frazier from St. Francis has had himself a season
already even if it’s only been one meet. Matt pulled off the
distance double at the first meet by winning the 1500m in 5:05
and then came back and won the 800m in 2:29. Matt’s future
looks bright as he looks toward greater heights this track season
with an eye on next year at Dowling Catholic.
TIMES: Matt, when did you first get excited about
running?
Matt: I ran the 5k in the Dam to Dam when I was in
third grade. I thought it was hard but I finished.
TIMES Do you have any runners, college, high school or
pro that you admire? Who and why?
Matt: I admire Ryan Schweitzer. We ran together when I
was in seventh grade, except in the meets when he ran
way in front of me.
TIMES: Tell us about your cross country championship
last fall?
Matt: Our 8th grade boys team ran really well. We won
the state championship over LinMar. the seventh grade
boys did great too. They got second and almost won.
TIMES: What are your goals for this track season?
Matt: I would like to improve my times in the 1500 and
800 in our meets. I would like our team from St Francis
to do well in the championship meet. I think we have a
good team.
Did you know?
Did you know that Matt Frazier’s favorite TV show is “How I Met Your Mother?” Did you know that Matt’s favorite song to listen to before competition is “Hall of Fame” by the Script? Did you know that Matt finished the Dam to Dam 5k as a third grader? Did you know that Matt’s favorite race is the 1500m? Did you know that Matt’s parents, Mike and Lisa were heroic runners in their own right?

St. Pius!
St. Pius had a great first meet for how many practices
we had this season. Our girls 5/6 sprint medley
broke a school record running a 2:08. We had other
great performances too. In the long jump, Alexis
Riesberg, a sixth grader jumped 13-01.50. Mike
Gipple, a fifth grader ran a strong 800 meter run in
2:39. Our 5/6 girls 4 x 100 meter relay ran a 1:01
winning the event.
It was a fun night to watch all the St. Pius runners
compete. I am so proud of these 5/6th graders and I
am looking forward to the next meet.
Did you know? Did you know that St. Pius Grad and daughter of St. Pius track coach Kathy Schweizer, Karissa won the state championship in the 3,000m at state in 2010 and finished 3rd at last year’s state xc championship? Did you know that Coach Schweizer’s husband Mike and father in-law, Frank were outstanding runners themselves? Did you know that St. Pius alum Jennie (Lillis) Baranczyk ran in this meet; spent a couple years on the Dowling XC team before helping the Maroons win a state basketball championship? Jennie was a 4-year letter winner and 3-year captain on the Iowa Women’s Basketball team. She is now the head women’s coach at Drake.

Holy Trinity!
What an exciting first
meet for our 5/6th graders!
Holy Trinity is pleased to
see that our returning athletes began this season as strong as
they finished last season. We are also excited about our 5th
graders who came in and immediately contributed to the
team!
Our 1500M runners are led by 6th grader Janey Meilander
5th grader Will Ode both with a 2nd place finish. Janey is
running as strong as she did last year and Will has come on
to the team and has immediately shown what he can do! 6th
grader Levi Hummel had a very nice run for us in the 800.
Our sprinters and hurdlers are a nice mix of 5th and 6th
grade making the future for HT speed very bright. 6th graders
Roz Heuckendorf, Jade Sharp, Ethan Perez and Henry
Simmons are quick, quick this year and we are adding fast
5th graders Ella Heuckendorf, Allena Shimon and Matthew
Stillwill to that mix. All posted nice finishes and are looking
forward to improving on those times.
We are also happy to see our 4x100 team of Janey
Meilander, Skyelar Clubb, Jade Sharp and Roz Heuckendorf
come together to post a 3rd place finish. Great to see such
great individual speed combine to make a great unit!
Simon Hoefing led HT boys on High Jump and Jade Sharp
led HT girls on Long
Jump. Tom Nolan
improved over last year
and placed 2nd in both
Shot Put and Discus in the
first meet. Overall, Holy
Trinity is very proud of all
our athletes for great effort,
strong results and good
sportsmanship!
Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart had some outstanding performers, and
we are proud of all of our kids.
To start the meet off Kevin Conner took first place
in the boys 1500 meter run with a time of 5:37,
teammate Ryan O’Halloran came in 4th. Kevin
came back later in the 800 and claimed 3rd place.
Jacob Gass was outstanding in several events,
placing 2nd in the 200, 100, and the long jump!
Kristin Grochala a 5th grader placed second in both
the shot and the discus, way to go Kristin! 5thgrader
Mallory Wilson sprinted to 4th in the 100 meter
dash, and anchored both our relays. Ellie Pigott
took second in the high jump.
The boys sprint medley relay team “A” was 2nd, and
team “B” was 3rd, how about that for some depth?
Thomas Faber tied for 3rd in the High Jump.
We are thrilled with how our kids
performed and are excited to see them in
action next Monday. Thanks to all who
helped to make this meet a success
St. Augustin The Royals had some stellar performances by the young crew. Kiki Levy and Caroline Fink ran a 1-2 finish in the
second heat of the 800 showing off some great kicking ability. The boys 4x100 Beh,Caligiuiri, Mcdonough and Fry
ran away from the competition in their heat. Reagan Damge showed some
strong throwing ability at her first try at the shot. Ellen Strittmatter would have
to be the MVP of the meet in her ability to throw, hurdle, sprint and run 2
relays. Zach Fry is proving to be a great half miler.
With 44 athletes in the 5/6 grades from St. Augustin and Bergman Academy is
hard to give them all their due. One thing that was evident was their will to
compete. Thank you to all the St. Augustin /Bergman parents that volunteered
to help.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardships as the pathway to peace, taking as Jesus did this sinful world as it is and not as I would have it. Trusting you will make all things right if I surrender to your will, that I might be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with you in the next. Amen”
