TablieristheFrenchwordforapron.Apronsareverypopulartomakeandwear,butthereisadownside.Ifthecuteretrostyleaprongetsdirty,itmustbewashedandironed!Thisdesigncontainsazipon/offterrytoweltohelpkeeptherestoftheapronclean.Simplyzipthetowelofftowashitwhengrimyhandshavesoileditsappearance.And,becauseitisembroideredwithFlorianipolyesterthread,goaheadandusethechlorinebleach!Itwon’thurtit.CuteANDpractical–what’sbetterthanthat!

Step 1 – Prepare FabricsPre-washbothfabricsandtowel.Pressfabrictoremovewrinkles.Cutthefabricsaccordingtothediagrams.ThePinkdiagramisfortheprintfabricandthegreendiagramisforthetrimfabric.

Cutoneofthe22”x36”piecesinhalfcreatingtwo18”x22”pieces.Thesewillbethebackoftheapronskirt.Theother22”x36”piecewillbethefront.

Fromthefour8”squares,cutcurvedcornersontwosidesofeach.

UseanoldCDorDVDasaguidetodrawthecurve.Italsoworkswellasacurvedrotarycut-terruler!Create4pocketpieces.Ifonefabricwillshadowthroughtheother,fuseDreamWeaveUltratothebackoftwoofthepieces.

Fromthe5”stripoftrimfabric,cut29”longstripsforthepocketheading.FuseapieceofDreamWeaveUltratothebackofeachstrip.Setaside.

Markthecenterofeachpocketborder.Positiontheprintedtemplate3/8”fromrawedgealigningthecenterofthetemplatewiththecenteroftheborder.Positionthefabriconthestabilizerasshown,1”fromthecenterline.Positiontheotherpocketborderontheoppositesideofthehoop,1”fromthecenterline.

Step 3 – EmbroideryThreadtheembroiderymachinewithtwocomplementarythreads.Forthisprojectthelightanddarkshadesofredonthecherriesintheapronfabric.Thecombinationlendsanextradimensiontothefinisheddesign.Asize80or90embroideryortopstitchneedlewillworkwell.Whilethereareneedlesavailablewithtwoeyes,itreallyisn’tnecessaryforthesedesigns.Thebobbinmaycontainwhitebobbinthread.

Putthehooponthemachine.Selectthepocketborderdesign.Rotateifnecessary.

Positionthedesignsothatthecrosshairofthetemplateundertheneedleasshown.Raisetheneedle.RemovethetemplateandcoverthedesignareawithWaterSolubletopping.Positionthetemplateontheotherpocketborder.

Step 2 – Embroidery prep

HoopapieceofFlorianiWetNGoneTacky(papersideup)inthe200mmx300mmhoop.Markthecentercrosshairsonthetopofthepaperwithadarkpenusingthehoopmarkingsasaguide.Byusingthissizehoop,allembroiderycanbeaccomplishedinasinglehoopingofstabilizer.

Turnthehoopover,andtracethesamelinesonthebackofthehoopwitharuler.Scoreandremovethepaperfromthetopsideofthehoopasdescribedinthestabilizerinstructions.

(A5”x7”hoopmaybeusedinsteadforembroideringthepocketbordersinasinglehooping.)

Stitchthedesign.Beforestitchingtheotherborder,usetheembroiderymachinefunctiontomirrorimagethedesign.

Locatetheneedletothecentercrosshairsofthenextdesign.Removetheprintedtemplate.Coverwithtoppingandstitchthedesign.Whencomplete,DONOTremovetheembroideryfromthehoop,unlessusingasmallerhoop.

Positiontheprintedtemplateontheborderofthetowelasshownabove.Positionthetowelonthehoopedstabilizer,usingthemarkingsandtemplateasaguide.Fingerpressthetowelinplacetosecureittothestabilizer.Loadthetoweldesignintotheembroiderymachine.Locatetheneedletothecentercrosshairsofthetoweldesign.Removethetemplate.Coverwithtopping.Stitchthedesign.

Whentheembroideryfinishes,placeadampwashclothoverthebackofthedesignstoreleasethemfromthestabilizer.Embroideryisnowcomplete.

Step 4 – Construction of the componentsSkirt:

SewtheskirtsidestogetherwithaFrenchseam(afterallitisaFrenchapron!).

Withwrongsidestogether,stitchaskirtbackpiecetoeachsideoftheskirtfrontpieces(onthe22”sides)usinga½"seamallowance.

Trimtheseamallowanceto⅛”.Presstheseam.Foldthetwopieces,rightsidestogetherandpress.The⅛”seamallowanceisnow“captured”.Stitcha¼”seamallowancetosecuretherawedgesinsidetheseam.Presto!Norawedgestoravelandfray.

Foldover3/8”alongthebackopeningoftheskirt(22”)andpress.Foldoveragainandpress.Stitch¼”fromtheouterfoldededgetofinishtheopening.Press.

Stitchtworowsofbastingstitches,oryourotherfavoritemethodforgather,alongthetopoftheskirt.Settheskirtasidefornow.

Waistband and Sashes:

Jointhreesectionsofthe4”stripstogethertocreatethewaistbandandsashties.Withrightsidestogether,layonestripoverthecorneroftheotherstrip,overlappingby¼"asshowninthephoto.Useastraightedgetodrawadiagonallinefortheseamlinefromrawedgecornertocorner.Pininplace.Stitchontheline.Trimtheseamallowanceto½"andpressopen.

Optional,butrecommended–cutapieceofDreamWeaveUltra4”wideand6”lessthanthewearer’swaistmeasurement.FusetheDreamWeaveUltratothecenterofthewaistband/sashingtoaddsomebodytothefabric.Ifthefabricisnaturallystiff,disregardthisrecommendation.

Pockets:

Withrightsidestogether,stitchthefrontpocketpiece(withtheDreamWeaveUltra)totheembroideredsideofthepocketbandwithascant¼"seamallowance.Stitchthepocketlining(theonewiththeDreamWeave)totheothersideoftheband,rightsidestogether,usinga¼"seamallowance.Presstheseamallowancesasshownbythearrowsintheimage.Theembroiderysideshouldbepressedtowardthepocket,andtheothersideofthebandtowardtheband.Thiswillreducethebulkwhenthepocketisassembled.

Foldthepocketinhalfattheband.Putrightsidestogether,matchingrawedgesandpintogether.Note,theseamallowancesonthebordershouldnesttogethertoreducebulk.Leavea4”opening(asshown)ononesideofthepockettoturnit.Stitchwitha¼"seamallowance.

Trimcornersandclipcurves.Turninsideoutthoughtheopening.Pressseamsandpocketsmooth.

Foldthepocketinhalflengthwiseandinsertapin(theyellowmarks)tomarkthecenteroftheopeningforplacementontheapronskirt.

Centerthepocketoverthesideseamsoftheskirt,usingthecenterpocketpinsasaguide.Measureup3-4”fromtheunfinishedhemoftheskirt.Measurethedistance.Positiontheotherpocketontheotherseamthesamedistanceupfromtheunfinishedhemoftheskirt.“Tape”thepocketinplacewithWetNGoneTackyTape(orsavedscraps).Topstitchinplacewitha⅛"seamallowance.(Ihighlyrecommendusinganedgestitchfootforaperfectfinish.Setskirtaside.

Towel:

Foldtheunfinishededgeofthetoweldowntodeterminehowlongthetowelshouldhangdownthefrontoftheskirt.Makesurethefoldededgesofthetowelarethesamelength.

Separatethezipper.Ontherightside(embroideredside)ofthetowel,placethehalfofthezipperwiththepullfacedownonthetowelatthemarkedlines.Useazipperfoottostitchclosetothecoiledgeofthezipperwithastraightstitch.

Trimtheexcessportionofthetowelaway¼"abovethestitchinglineofthezipper,asshown.Foldthezippertapebackdownontothebodyofthetowel

Determinethewaistmeasurementoftheapronwearer.Subtract3”;then,divideinhalf.Forexample,ifthewaistmeasurementis36”;subtract3”.Theresultingmeasurementis33”.Dividedinhalfis16.5”.Markthetopcenteroftheapronskirt.Gathertheskirtoneithersideofthecentertothemeasurementdeterminedabove(16.5”).Pinthegatheredskirttothefront(zipperside)ofthewaistband.Thesideseamsshouldbe7.5”fromthecenterfrontofthewaistband(halfof18”–3”).Pinthegatheredskirttothewaistband.Bastestitchinplace.Ifthebastingisappropriate,zigzagtheskirttothewaistband.

Aftertheskirthasbeenzigzagstitchedtothewaistband,putthezipperfootbackonthemachineandstitchasclosetothezipperteethaspossible.Foldthewaistband,rightsidestogether,pinandstitch½"fromtherawedgeoneithersideuntilreachingtheskirtonbothsides.Clipthecornersandturnthesashingrightsideout.Pressthesashing.Pressunder½"ontheinnerwaistbandnexttotheskirt.Slipstitchinplacebyhand.

Hemtheapronskirtbyfoldingupthehem.

Asanalternative,usetheremainingsashingandstitchtothehemwitha5/8”seamallowance.Turnuptheexcessfabricandpress.Createafacing.Stitchintheditchtosecurethefacinghem.

andpininplace.Stitchazigzagstitchtosecurethetapetothebackofthetowelandthezipperteethwillbeexposedonthetopofthetowel.Thiswillalsocatchtherawedgeofthetrimmedtoweltopreventitfromravelingandfraying.Setthetowelasidefornow.

Step 5 – Final assembly

Foldthewaistband/sashinginhalfandmarkthecenterwithastraightpin.Foldtheremainingsideofthezipperinhalfandmarkthecenterwithapin(donotincludethetapeareaabovethetoporbottomofthefunctioningzipper).Matchthecenterofthezippertothecenterofthewaistbandandpininplaceasshownabove.

Theseamallowanceofthewaistbandis½".Ifthezippertapeisnotthatwide,positionthezippertoallowa½”seamallowance.Foldtheexcesszippertapetabupintothewaistbandseamallowanceasshown.

Useazipperfootandstitchthezippertothewaistbandwithastraightstitchasclosetothezipperteethaspossible.
