To Accelerate IT Innovation, Think like a Rocket Scientist A Mobile Transformation Mission with Microsoft Windows 10 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Reimagine10
Similar to the pioneering scientists that make space exploration possible,
IT leaders of large organizations are charged with pulling off complex
missions that push the boundaries of new technology to achieve bolder
objectives. For IT innovators, a critical mission today is to capitalize on
the latest mobile and digital technologies to help dissolve geographies,
transform business processes, and accelerate innovation.
At the same time, IT leaders face complex challenges, such as combining
new technologies with existing infrastructure investments and retaining a
high level of security in an increasingly mobile world. To accomplish their
mission quickly and safely, it takes a team with deep experience and
expertise, a time-tested approach, and the right tools and technologies,
all working together in a coordinated effort.
To help make digital and mobile transformation missions a success,
Hewlett Packard Enterprises and Microsoft have joined forces to help IT
leaders unleash real, rapid, and safe mobile and digital innovation using
groundbreaking technologies and processes.
Read on to learn how thinking like a rocket scientist will help you manage
complexity and accelerate your IT innovation.

Gather Requirements and Select Technologies
Long-term foundation based upon mission-critical technology requirements
Mapping out the technologies that will lay the foundation for many different missions moving forward
is critical to long-term savings, interoperability, reliability, and ease of use. In mobile business
transformations, your “rocket” propelling your business productivity forward is your devices and apps,
and your “mission control” seamlessly manages data, devices, apps, and identity.
Every space mission has benefited from legacy technologies while also incorporating the latest ground-
breaking engineering innovations. It’s critical that your technology platform enable a hybrid approach
that seamlessly combines existing and new.
The technologies you choose when embarking on enabling mobile innovation should be:
Consistent across PC’s and mobile devices
Compatible with multiple cloud technologies and work
seamlessly with your existing infrastructure
Leading-edge in data, identities, and device protection
Proven and reputable
Enterprise-grade
Familiar across both back and front-ends for simplicity and
easier adoption
Adhering to these requirements will save a lot of time, money,
effort, and heartache. These stringent but important requirements
are why HPE is collaborating deeply with Microsoft—to provide
enterprise-ready solutions that safely and effectively mobilize and
digitize business processes by empowering employees, unifying IT
environments, and protecting data.
With Windows 10, you can build universal apps that offer a familiar
experience across all Windows devices while having one
management paradigm and security model, saving costs and
reducing IT complexity. Windows 10 is the most secure Windows
ever, offering multiple layers of enterprise protection against
modern security threats. And it’s designed to work with Microsoft’s
Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS), which offers robust cloud-based

Plan The Mission and Build a Prototype In space travel, failure on a big scale is not an option.
Likewise, the stakes are high for businesses investing in new
technology. It can cost enterprises millions—even tens of
millions—of dollars if a big project stalls or fails to land.
Therefore, it is critical to take an agile approach that radically
speeds up the transformation process and offers a platform for
iterative innovation. As you reimagine new business workflows
and develop your plan, you should quickly develop a
demonstrable prototype that can be used and tested early. In
fact, as you start the planning process, subject matter experts,
business analysts, developers and user experience designers
should be together in the same room working on both the flight
plan and, simultaneously, a working prototype. HPE’s
Reimagine 10 intensive 5-day workshop
Mission success begins with a clear destination and a good plan for getting there. However, having a
well-defined destination isn’t always straightforward, and there are key questions you need to answer
to clarify where you want to go:
1. What is the shared vision? Agree on your ultimate mission. Is it to increase customer satisfaction?
Grow revenue? Improve employee productivity?
2. What are the success metrics? Understand what you can measure to define levels of success. Is it
time reduction of a process? User satisfaction rating? ROI? Increased revenue? All of the above?
3. What are the business goals? Create a set of benchmarks and goals. What are the numbers you
want to achieve? By when do you want to achieve them?
4. What are the pain points? Dissect particular business processes associated with the vision and
start to reimagine a better way of working. Where are there inefficiencies? Where is there lost
opportunity?
HPE’s Reimagine 10 is an intensive five-day workshop designed to help you succinctly answer each of
these questions so that you come away with a sound, actionable plan for rapid, low risk execution of
successful innovations.
#1 CIO concern: "Can't

meet business goals

initiatives will have failed to
deliver business growth due to
lack of business model
innovation, effective big change
techniques, organizational
liquidity and process

Develop a Prototype
Reimagine 10 workshops don’t stop at just developing the
plan. In five days, HPE also develops a usable Windows 10
prototype that users can start testing right away on devices.
This groundbreaking approach can help you do within weeks
or a few months what used to take a year or much longer to
accomplish. The workshop is all about innovating testing
real scenarios with real software on real devices. White
boards are great for the first day or two, but keeping
concepts “on paper” will only serve to stall innovation.
Having a working prototype developed during the intensive
business process workflow discussion brings ideas to life.
Then business simulations on real devices and iterating with
an agile approach moves the mission forward and rapidly
and provides assurances only attainable by real-world use.
Mitigate Risks
Launching IT changes can be fraught with
risk as you can face inhospitable
environments from both your own
employees who may reject the change,
as well as from outside security risks.

“You can run as many models as you like, and over time those models will take on increasing levels of sophistication. But at the end of the day, it’s flying a real vehicle that is the most important to improving the safety of the system”

Make sure “All Systems are Go” - Foster Internal Adoption In four short years five generations of employees will co-exist in the workplace: Traditionalists, Baby
boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen 2020. Massive changes to workplace culture, practices, and
technology are taking place, and the way in which you motivate and empower this multi-generational
crowd is becoming an increasing challenge. How these groups interpret and tackle daily business
challenges can vary widely. The opportunity for your applications and systems to span the breadth of
generations and enable knowledge sharing is critical for your success.
Ensuring adoption of your new technologies involves three key factors:
(1) Great business process planning.
(2) Use of early adopters /influencers as you test and socialize.
(3) Using technologies that are familiar and intuitive out the gate.
With HPE by your side, you will cover the first two factors as they help you create a comprehensive
plan and then test new processes and applications early with employees.
And with Windows 10, employees are productive right away with its familiar experience across PCs,
tablets, and phones. One major advantage of Windows 10 is that it takes the familiarity of the
Windows desktop and merges it with recent advancements, so employees are experts from the start
and get seamless workflows across all their devices.
Protect Against Alien Life Forms Mobile innovation can truly thrive when you have the
peace of mind that security is built into the fabric of
your organization. It takes a holistic approach, which
means integrating powerful but agile data protection and
governance measures across the whole environment —
including people, processes and technology. This is where HPE’s deep experience and expertise with
enterprise security is paramount, helping you assess risk and incorporate the right level of protection

at each layer of your IT stack. In fact, when it comes to enterprise security, HPE is #1 in helping
organizations identify vulnerability and threats. HPE security solutions are in 8 of 10 of the world’s
largest companies, and 9 of 10 of the world’s largest banks trust HPE to protect more than $9 trillion
in daily transactions.
Windows 10 is the most secure Windows ever with entirely new
ways to help protect identities, data, and devices. Microsoft
Passport is an easy to deploy two-factor password alternative.
Windows Hello provides enterprise grade biometric security for
modern devices. Enterprise Data Protection makes it easier to
perform data separation & containment of corporate data,
wherever it might be. Hardware-based security like Device Guard
helps maintain and validate hardware and system integrity.
Having older devices throughout your organization that weren’t
designed to withstand today’s security threats can be a point of
weakness. Migrating to Windows 10 hardware allows you to take
full advantages of the full suite of security features built-in to
Windows 10. HPE specializes in Windows migrations, large and
small. Having executed hundreds of migrations, including dozes greater than 50,000 seats, HPE has
special tools and processes in place to make them more seamless and successful than ever.
Aim for Simplicity
While rocket science and space travel are by no means
“simple”, scientists do strive for simplification in order
to have fewer potential points of failure. The same
holds true for information technology. You reduce
security risk by having streamlined systems with fewer
opportunities for downtime, gaps in security, and
unforeseen incompatibilities. You shouldn’t have to
write and rewrite code for different form factors. Security updates should be simple and smooth to
implement. New technologies should integrate seamlessly with your existing infrastructure and other
cloud technologies, yet be robust enough for the task.
HPE’s end-to-end lifecycle services (Advise – Design – Develop – Test – Deploy – Manage - Monitor) with
in-depth methodologies specific to Microsoft cloud and Windows 10 technologies, provide you with one
source of accountability across all touchpoints. And you can avoid having to patch together and
manage several disparate providers, a feat in and of itself’.
“The best path to reducing risk is to have a simple system”3
- John Logsdon, Space Policy Professor
Emeritus, George Washington University
Organizations need to consider the additional benefits that modern
hardware designs engineered specifically for
the new capabilities of Windows 10 can bring to addressing key challenges
to the business and maximizing the real
benefits of migrating to Windows 10.
