* The Tang era was a golden age for Chinese arts, literature and poetry.

* The best works of art were glazed pottery figures of horses, camels, and other subjects.

* Tang architects and sculptures designed inspiring Buddhist temples and decorated them with statues.

* One of the most famous poets was Li Bo. His favorite subject was the beauty of nature.

Why do you think having scholar officials running the government would be a good or not so good thing?

* The Song Dynasty (came after the Tang) described as the era of good government.

* They used the civil service exam to hire people as government officals.

* The test was first used by the Han Dynasty and was first thought of by Confucius (a great Chinese philosopher).

* The government monitored scholar-officials to make sure that they were honest and efficient.

* Scholar-officials could not serve in their home districts - this would help them avoid doing favors for family and friends.

* They would work in a position for three years - prevents them from becoming too powerful in one place.

* By using the civil service exam the Song hoped to avoid corruption in government.
