1. Poor time management.

Do not spend more thanthe allocated 45 minuteson this question. Otherwise

you will not haveenough time for the second

question. Remember thesecond question carries

more marks.

2. Lengthy essays• .Do not write too much. This question

does not make many demands on acandidate.

• Directed writing is a brief piece

of writing. All you have to do is use the given points and provide a sentence ortwo to elaborate on them. However, donot write too short an essay. A response

of 1½ - 2 pages is more than sufficient. After all, the more you write the moremistakes you are likely to make. Save thetime and energy for Continuous Writing

3. Avoid informal language•

This paper tests your writtenEnglish. Do not use spokenlanguage. Avoid using slang words(such as guys, dudes,breaky, toasty)

•  Some candidates tend to use asmany idiomatic expressions as

they can in their piece of writing.Reading a piece of writinglittered with such expressionsdevalues the merits the piece ofwriting may have.

5. PUNCTUATION•

Some candidates do not punctuatetheir sentences correctly. Makesure you end your sentence with afull stop and not a

comma. Also, make sure that thepronoun (I) is written in uppercase and not lower case (i) as isthe practice among somecandidates. NO TEXT LANGUAGEOR SPELLING
