1925

10th November 1925•The Film society was established in London

• It was the first of its kind.

1st March 1931•Oscar Deutsch forms Cinema Service to begin 6 Odeon Theatres .

1st March 1931• Sunday Entertainments Act allows Sunday opening of

cinemas and considers establishment of British Film Institute

1st May 1932•The BBFC introduces the ‘H’ Certificate

• Used alongside the ‘U’ and ‘A’ certificate to alter views that a film contained horror content.

• ‘U’ stands for universal – suitable for everyone• ‘A’ means that children must be accompanied by an

adult.

1st September 1933•The British Film Institute launched.

• A charity governed by the Royal Charter. • They award lottery funding to film production,

distribution, education, audience development and market intelligence and research.

1937•First UK feature film in colour

• The film released in colour was called ‘Wing of the Morning’

• Original version was released in 1935 in Hollywood.

1945

•UK cinema film admissions peaked at 1585 million

1951 - 1970•The ‘X’ Certificate was introduced.

• This allows only those 16 and older to enter. • This replaced the ‘H’ Certificate.

1st January 1962•First James Bond Film Released

• This was called ‘Dr No’ and grossed $59.6 million.• This was a huge world wide success for the British film

industry.

1973•VAT introduction applies to cinema tickets.

1970 - 1982• The changes of the ‘A’

certificate was introduced.• This now allowed those aged five and older to be

admitted, but warned children under 14 may not wish to watch the film.

• The new AA allowed only those aged 14 or over to be admitted.

• As there was now a mandatory certificate at 14, the X certificate was modified to raise its age from 16 to 18.

1st September 1997• Introduction of DVDs

2002 to Present•The current film ratings were introduced.
