Census
• Began in 1790 - tracked population growth - demographics, characteristics of population• Purpose - taxation - representation - economic decisions• Conducted every ten years
Information from the Census• Population growth - birthrate (births/1000) - death rate (deaths/1000) - natural increase• Age demographics - currently U.S. population is old• Immigration statistics - over 60 million since 1820
Population Trends
• Smaller families - less than 2 children - single parent households• Aging population - 20% over age 65 by 2030• Women working - more education - more career oriented
