Ionic liquids are ionic, salt-like materials that are
liquid below 100°C. Most ILs are formed from organic
cations and inorganic/organic anions. Due to the
wide range of cation and anion combinations, ILs can
be tuned to have a great variety of chemical and
physical properties, making them promising
substances for use in a variety of field such as
biomass dissolution, direct biomass conversion to
specialty chemicals and fuels, desulfurization, CO2
capture, pollutant gasses treatment, oil dispersant,
etc. This course will provide participants with state-
of–the-art information regarding the synthesis of ILs
such as quaternization, metathesis, and acid base
neutralization reactions. The introduction of
predictive approach of ionic liquid toxicity will be
delivered during the workshop.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Demonstrate the ionic liquids synthesis route
using quaternization, ion exchange, metathesis
and acid-base neutralization.
Overview on ionic liquid potential applications.
Predictive approach of ionic liquid toxicity.

AP Dr. Cecilia Devi Wilfred is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS with more than 16 years of academic experience and 4 years experience in industry. She obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry from University of York in 2004. She is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 2011 and a fellow member of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM).
Professor Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim B Abdul Mutalib is a Fellow of IChemE, UK and a Chartered Engineer registered with the UK Engineering Council. He obtained his PhD and MSc degree from UMIST in the area of Process Integration. He joined Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) as a Senior Lecturer and later promoted to Associate Professor in 2002 and Professor in 2014 respectively. He was appointed as the director of PETRONAS Ionic Liquid Centre at UTP from 2010 to 2013 where he was responsible in establishing the foundations required to embark on fundamentals and applied research The center has been renamed to the Center of Research
in Ionic Liquids (CORIL) in 2014. His current area of research includes Ionic Liquids synthesis, characterization and application for chemical processes. Recently, he ventured into the Ionic Liquids Toxicity looking at specifically developing predictive methods that could prevent laborious experimental work needed to determine Ionic Liquids Toxicity. He has also served UTP as the Founding Head of the Chemical Engineering Department (1998), Director of Research Innovation Office (2001-2009) and Dean of Engineering Faculty (2013-2015). Recently, he was appointed as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics.
AP Dr. Zakaria Man is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He obtained his PhD from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom. He has 18 years of experience in academic and 10 years in petrochemicals industry. His research revolves around the synthesis and application of ionic liquids, interphase modification of polymer blends, and development of biopolymer.
AP Dr. Chong Fai Kait is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. She received her PhD from University of Dundee, Scotland in 1998. She has 15 years academic experience and her main research interests are industrial chemistry, organometallic complex and naphtha reforming.
