CongratulationsonpurchasingyourTimeCapsule.Readthisguidetogetstarted.

TimeCapsuleoffersyouthesimplicityoffullyautomatedbackupforyourWi-Finetwork.UsingtheTimeMachineapplicationinMacOSXv10.5.7Leopardorlater,it’seasyandautomatictobackupallthecomputersonyournetworktoasingleTimeCapsule.

TheTimeCapsuleisalsoafullyfeaturedAirPortExtremeBaseStationthatprovidessimultaneousdual-bandwirelessnetworking.WhenyousetupyourTimeCapsule,itcreatestwohigh-speedWi-Finetworks:

 A2.4gigahertz(GHz)networkfor802.11b,802.11g,and802.11ndevices,suchasiPhone,iPodtouch,andoldercomputers

WithyourTimeCapsule,youcan:

 UsetheTimeMachineapplicationinMacOSXv10.5.7(orlater)tobackupallthecomputersonyourwirelessnetwork,aswellascomputersconnectedtoyourTimeCapsuleusingEthernet.

Note:  YourfirstbackupwithTimeCapsuleandTimeMachinecouldtakeovernightorlonger,dependingonhowmuchdatayou’rebackingup.Tospeeduptheinitialbackup,useanEthernetcabletoconnectyourcomputertotheLANportonyourTimeCapsule.FormoreinformationaboutusingTimeMachine,see“UsingTimeMachinewithYourTimeCapsule”onpage24. Createapassword-protectedwirelesshomenetwork,andthenconnecttotheInternetandsharetheconnectionwithothercomputersandWi-Fidevices,suchasiPad,iPhone,iPodtouch,andAppleTV.Youcanalsosharefilesamongcomputersconnectedtothenetwork.

Important:  UseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourTimeCapsule.PreviousversionsofAirPortSetupAssistantandAirPortAdminUtilityarenotcompatiblewiththisTimeCapsule.

Plugging In Your Time CapsuleBeforeyoupluginyourTimeCapsule,firstconnecttheappropriatecablestotheportsyouwanttouse:

 ConnecttheEthernetcablethat’sconnectedtoyourDSLorcablemodem(ifyouwillconnecttotheInternet)totheEthernetWAN(<)port.

 ConnectaUSBcableconnectedfromtheUSB(d)portonyourTimeCapsuletoacompatibleUSBprinter(ifyouwillprinttoaUSBprinter),aharddisk,orahub.

 ConnectanEthernetcablefromanyEthernetdevicetotheEthernetLAN(G)ports.

Afteryou’veconnectedthecablesforallthedevicesyouplantouse,connectthepowercordtothepowerportandplugyourTimeCapsuleintoapoweroutlet.Thereisnopowerswitch.

Important:  UseonlythepowercordthatcamewithyourTimeCapsule.

WhenyouplugyourTimeCapsuleintoapoweroutlet,thestatuslightflashesgreenforonesecondandthenglowsamberwhileyourTimeCapsulestartsup.AfteryourTimeCapsulehasstartedupcompletely,thestatuslightflashesamberuntilyourTimeCapsulehasbeenupdatedwiththecorrectsettings.ThestatuslightglowssolidgreenafteryourTimeCapsuleisproperlysetupandconnectedtotheInternetoranetwork.

WhenyouconnectEthernetcablestotheEthernetports,thelightsabovethemglowsolidgreen.

Light Status/description

Off YourTimeCapsuleisunplugged.

Solid amber YourTimeCapsuleiscompletingitsstartupsequence.

Flashing amber YourTimeCapsulecan’testablishaconnectiontothenetworkortheInternet,orisencounteringaproblem.MakesureyouhaveinstalledAirPortUtilityanduseittogetinformationaboutwhatmightcausethestatuslighttoflashamber.See“IfYourTimeCapsuleStatusLightFlashesAmber”onpage29.

Solid green YourTimeCapsuleisonandworkingproperly.IfyouchooseFlashOnActivityfromtheStatusLightpop-upmenu(intheBaseStationpaneofAirPortsettingsinAirPortUtility),thestatuslightmayflashgreentoindicatenormalactivity.

Flashing amber and green Theremaybeaproblemstartingup.YourTimeCapsulewillrestartandtryagain.

WirelesscomputersandcomputersconnectedtotheEthernetportscanalsocommunicatewitheachotherthroughyourTimeCapsule.

Ifyou’reusingyourTimeCapsuletoconnecttotheInternet,youneedabroadband(DSLorcablemodem)accountwithanInternetserviceprovider(ISP),oraconnectiontotheInternetusinganexistingEthernetnetwork.IfyoureceivedspecificinformationfromyourISP(suchasastaticIPaddressoraDHCPclientID),youmayneedtoenteritinAirPortUtility.HavethisinformationavailablewhenyousetupyourTimeCapsule.

CreatingaNewWirelessNetworkYoucanusetheAirPortUtilitysetupassistanttocreateanewwirelessnetwork.Thesetupassistantguidesyouthroughthestepsnecessarytonameyournetwork,protectyournetworkwithapassword,andsetotheroptions.

If you plan to share a USB printer or USB hard disk on your network:1 ConnecttheprinterorharddisktotheTimeCapsuleUSB(d)port.

2 OpenAirPortUtility,locatedintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonaMac,orinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.

3 SelectyourTimeCapsuleandclickContinue.

Ifyoudon’tseetheTimeCapsuleyouwanttoconfigure,clickRescantoscanforavailablewirelessdevices,andthenselectyourTimeCapsulefromthelist.

4 Followtheonscreeninstructionstocreateanewnetwork.

ConfiguringandSharingInternetAccessIfyouplantoshareyourInternetconnectionwithwireless-enabledcomputersonyournetworkorwithcomputersconnectedtotheEthernetports,youneedtosetupyourTimeCapsuleasanAirPortbasestation.AfteryourTimeCapsuleissetup,computersaccesstheInternetthroughtheAirPortnetwork.YourTimeCapsuleconnectstotheInternetandtransmitsinformationtothecomputersoverthewirelessnetwork.

BeforeyouuseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourTimeCapsule,connectyourDSLorcablemodemtotheTimeCapsuleEthernetWAN(<)port.Ifyou’reconnectingyourTimeCapsuletoanEthernetnetworkthatalreadyhasInternetaccess,connectittotheEthernetnetwork.

UsetheAirPortUtilitysetupassistanttoenteryourISPsettingsandconfigurehowyourTimeCapsulesharesthesettingswithothercomputers.

IfAirPortUtilityisn’tinstalledonyourcomputer,youcandownloaditfromwww.apple.com/support/airport.

2 SelectyourTimeCapsuleandclickContinue.

Ifyou’remakingchangestoaTimeCapsulethathasalreadybeensetup,youmighthavetoconnecttothenetworkit’screatedbeforemakingchangestotheTimeCapsule.

TochoosethewirelessnetworkyouwanttochangeonaMac,usetheAirPortstatusmenuinthemenubar.OnacomputerusingWindows,holdthepointeroverthewirelessconnectioniconuntilyouseethenetworkname(SSID),andthenchooseitfromthelistiftherearemultiplenetworksavailable.

3 FollowtheonscreeninstructionstoconfigureandshareInternetaccessonyourTimeCapsule.

AirPortUtilityprovidesaquickandeasywaytosetupyourTimeCapsuleandnetwork.Ifyouwanttosetadditionaloptionsforyournetwork,suchasrestrictingaccesstoyournetworkorsettingadvancedDHCPoptions,chooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenuofAirPortUtility.

SettingAdvancedOptionsUseAirPortUtilitytosetupyourTimeCapsulemanuallyifyouwanttosetadvancedTimeCapsuleoptionssuchasadvancedsecurityoptions,closednetworks,DHCPleasetime,accesscontrol,powercontrols,useraccounts,andmore.

To set advanced options:1 OpenAirPortUtility,locatedintheUtilitiesfolderintheApplicationsfolderonaMac,andinStart>AllPrograms>AirPortonacomputerusingWindows.

IfAirPortUtilityisn’tinstalledonyourcomputer,youcandownloaditfromwww.apple.com/support/airport.

2 Ifthere’smorethanonewirelessdeviceinthelist,selecttheoneyouwanttoconfigure.Ifyoudon’tseetheTimeCapsuleyouwanttoconfigure,clickRescantoscanforavailablewirelessdevices,andthenselectyourTimeCapsulefromthelist.Ifyou’remakingchangestoaTimeCapsulethathasalreadybeensetup,youmighthavetoconnecttothenetworkit’screatedbeforemakingchangestoyourTimeCapsule.

TochoosethewirelessnetworkyouwanttochangeonaMac,usetheAirPortstatusmenuinthemenubar.OnacomputerusingWindows,holdthepointeroverthewirelessconnectioniconuntilyouseethenetworkname(SSID),andthenchooseitfromthelistiftherearemultiplenetworksavailable.

3 ChooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenu.Ifyou’repromptedforapassword,enterit.

AllowingWirelessClientstoAccessYourNetworkWithoutEnteringaPasswordIfyournetworkispassword-protectedusingWPAPersonalorWPA/WPA2Personal,youcanprovidewirelessclientsaccesstoyournetworkwithoutrequiringthemtoenterthenetworkpassword.

Whenyouallowaclientaccesstoyournetwork,theclient’snameandwirelessMACaddress(orAirPortID)arestoredintheaccesscontrollistofAirPortUtilityuntilyouremovetheclientfromthelist.Youcanalsoprovide24hoursofaccess,afterwhichtimetheclientcannolongeraccessyournetwork.

Whenyougiveaclientaccesstoyourwirelessnetwork,theclientdoesn’tneedtoenterthenetworkpassword.

To allow a client to access your network without entering the network password:1 OpenAirPortUtility,selectyourTimeCapsule,andthenchooseManualSetupfromtheBaseStationmenu.Enterthepasswordifnecessary.

2 ChooseAddWirelessClientsfromtheBaseStationmenu.

3 Selecthowyouwanttheclienttoaccessthenetwork:

 SelectPINtoentertheeight-digitnumberprovidedbytheclientrequestingnetworkaccess.

 Select“Firstattempt”toallownetworkaccesstothefirstclientattemptingtojointhenetwork.

WhiletheTimeCapsulewaitsforaclienttojointhenetwork,theLEDglowsblue.

Select“Limitclient’saccessto24hours”ifyouwanttoprovidejustonedayofaccesstoyournetwork.Ifyoudon’tselectthisoption,theclienthasaccessuntilyouremovetheclientfromthelist.

UsingTimeMachinewithYourTimeCapsuleWiththeTimeMachineapplicationinMacOSX(Leopardorlater)youcanbackupeverythingonyourcomputer,includingyourphotos,music,movies,anddocuments.

AfteryousetupTimeMachine,itautomaticallybacksupyourcomputeronaregularbasis.
