Onceagainwe'veheardofachurchshoo1ngthispastSundayattheWestFreewayChurchofChristnearDallas.Whilethreevic1mslosttheirlives,oneofthemtheshooter;thechurch'ssecurityteamisbeinglaudedforpreven1ngamuchgrimmerdeathtoll.Onememberofthisteamwasarmed,ready,andwai1ngtoactuponjustwhathappened.Hewasagoodguywithagunwhopreventedthebadguywithagunfromdoinggreaterharm.ManyarehailingtheTexasgunlawsthatallowedthisveryscenariotoplayout.

I'mnotconvinced.I'mnotques1oningthispar1cularstory.I'mgratefulitwasn'tworse.Butweneedtoviewthisstoryfromabovethefray.

Massshoo1ngsgetalltheaQen1on.Whatwedon'treadaboutinthenewsarethedailydeathsfromgunsthatsurgewayaboveisolatedmassshoo1ngs.RebaHolly,fromMomsDemandAc6onForGunSenseinAmerica,spokeatSt.Bart'sbackinNovemberwhenwebeatthegunintoagardentool.Shenotedthatgundeathsfromsuicides,accidents,andhomicidesarefargreater,inpercentage,instateslikeTexas,withitslaxgunlaws;thaninstateslikeNewJersey,withstrictergunlaws.Itmakessense.Greateraccesstogunswillcausemoredeathstogunviolence.

Ononehand,theWestFreewayChurchofChrististobeadmiredfortheirsecurityteamandquickresponsetothisdeadlythreat.S1ll,Ihesitatetoembraceasystemthatencouragesmoregunstokeeppeace.Maybeitworkedlastweek,butI,forone,feellesssecurewhenthisbecomesthenormtoprotecthousesofworship.

As2019rolledinto2020,Ispentsome1mereminiscingontheyearthathasbeen.AlthoughIfindmyselfandmyfamilyrela1velyhealthyandprovidedfor,2019provedtobequitedifficult.Thedailygrindwasharderthisyear.WestminsterChoirCollege’ssitua1onismoreperilousthanithasbeenformorethanagenera1on.Andthishasweighedheavilyonme,asIverymuchlovetheschoolandwhatitstandsfor.AlthoughIamhopefulforWestminsterin2020,Iamnotconfidentinitsfuture.

MeganandIwereblessed,though,totravelsomein2019,seeingsomeofourfavoriteplaces.WegottovisitMelodyinMainetwice,andweworkedourwayupanddownthecoastforafewshortweekendswithfriendsandfamily.AndthemusicministryatPoPhascon1nuedtobefulfillingandsustaining.AsIlookedbackatsomeofmyphotographsfrom2019,IcameacrossonethatwastakenonMarch24.ThiswasbackduringLent,andJohnFranekwasourchurch

musician.Asyouallremember,Johnenjoyedimprovisinghispreludesandpostludes,o8engivingmini-concertsaspostludes.OnMarch24,2019,IstartedthepostludeasIo8endo,unpluggingthepowertothewirelessmicrophones,properlystowingthei-Pad,andturningoffthesoundsystem.AsIemergedfromthesacristy,IsawStellaAngevineatthepianowhileJohnwasplaying.ItwasasifJohnsensedwhatshewantedtohear,ashede8lyplayedthroughvaria1onsonAmazingGrace.Idon’trememberStellacomingovertothepianobefore,soherpresencewaspowerful,

inten1onal,andimportant.ItwouldbetheverylastworshipserviceatPrinceofPeacethatStellawouldaQendbeforeherpassingafewweekslater.

TheWinFamilyseQledinHamiltonabouttwomonthsago.TheyareMuslimswhoescapedreligiouspersecu1oninBurma(Myanmar).Thefamilyismadeupofafather(age42),mother(age40),twosons(ages13and11)andadaughter(age7).Theydonothaveanyclosefamilyorfriendsinthearea.TheylandedinHamilton‘byluck.’ThefatherwasabusinessmaninBurmaandspeakssixlanguages.HeisveryeasytocommunicatewithinEnglish.ThechildrenaregeongbeQerattheirEnglish!

Thefamilyseemstobedoingalltherightthings.Thechildrenhavereceivedtheirimmuniza1onsandareenrolledinschool.Thefatheristakingpartinajobtrainingprogram.

Atthispointin1me,theirmosturgentneedisfood.Resurrec1onLutheranChurchhasafoodpantrywhichisopenonthefirstandthirdWednesdaysofthemonthfrom5:30to7:30pm.POPvolunteerstransportedthefamilytothefoodpantryduringthemonthofDecember.WearelookingforvolunteersfortheNewYear.Thetaskinvolvespickingthefamilyupattheirhome,drivingthemtothechurch,assis1ngtheminpickingoutfooditems,andtakingthemhome.Thetotal1mecommitmentisabouttwohours.

Firstproject:PeaceGardenShedAfewyearsagoPrinceofPeacestartedthePeace

Gardenonchurchproperty.Thegardengrowsproduceforfoodpantries,soupkitchens,andotherorganiza1onswhoprovidemealsforthefood-insecureinlocalcommuni1es.

Thegardencoulduseashedtostoregardentoolsandequipment,andbags,ascale,andlabelsneededtopackagefreshproduce.Storageisnowspreadbetweenvolunteers'cartrunks,anunorganizedbinnearthegarden,andatarela1velydistantgarage.Theshedwillbenearthegardentoprotectandextendthelifeofdonatedtoolsandmakethemaccessibletoallvolunteersasneeded.

Thevolunteerswillbenefitfromtheconveniencebutmoreimportantly,thefood-insecureinourcommuni1eswillbenefitfromthecon1nuedproduc1onoffreshvegetableswewillbeabletoprovide.

Volunteerswilldesignandbuildaplatormonwhichtoconstructashedfromakitwhichdoesnotincludeabase.

SecondProject:HouseNextDoorPropertyEnhancement

TheHouseNextDoorisanoutreachministrycenteredinthehouseonthepropertynexttoPrinceofPeace.Theministryisdedicatedtoreachingthosewhomaynotnecessarilycometotradi1onalworshiporbelongtoachurchbutwouldlikespiritualdirec1on.Inrecentyearsthechurchhasaddedseveralgardens(PeaceGarden,BuQerflyGarden,MemorialGarden)andalabyrinthtothispropertyandwelcomesthecommunityatlargeaswellasindividualsandorganiza1onstousethefacility.

TheSpiritualForma1onTeamwouldliketomaketheoutdoorareasevenmoreconvenient,flexible,andwelcoming,andbuildorpurchasemoresignage,pamphletholders,andpicnictablestoexpandandeasetheuseofthesebeau1fuloutdoorareasaspartofretreats,workshopsandmee1ngsforthepublicandthecongrega1on.

WhatHasThriventGivenPrinceofPeace?Thriventhassent$250seedmoneyforeach

project,abannertohangasweworkontheprojects,T-shirtsforvolunteers,andmiscellaneousprojectassistanceplusafreefacebooklinkthroughthrivent.comforfurtherfundraising.

AsweenjoytheTwelveDaysofChristmasandcelebrateEpiphany,itis1metolookforwardtoFebruary.Averyfavoritetradi1on,forboththesendersandreceivers,isthefillingandshippingofcarepackages.Wefillandsendboxeswithgoodies,supplies,andtreatstoouryoungadultswhoareawayatschool.Manyyearsagotheboxeswereasurprise,butnowourstudentsknowtheboxiscomingandtheyarealways‘surprised’toseehowmanygoodieswecanfitintothe8”x8”x12”box.Thistradi1onstartedmany,manyyearsagowithjustafewboxes,andlastyearwesent28boxes.
