12-15 September, Treffen Banff
The members of the Wild Rose Region and the Treffen North America staff invite you to attend Treffen
Banff in the breathtaking Canadian Rockies within Banff National Park over September 12 – 15, 2018.
The headquarters hotel for this event is the historic Fairmont Banff Springs, a landmark in the
picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta. Built during the 19th century as one of Canada’s grand railway
hotels, the Fairmont Banff Springs is known as Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies” and has been providing
legendary hospitality to their guests for more than 125 years.
The primary reason for touring this fairytale Canadian oasis is the awe-inspiring mountain vistas and
scenic drives throughout Banff National Park. Driving routes like the world-famous Icefields Parkway
offer access to dizzying mountains, hanging lakes and glaciers. And be sure to watch for elusive wildlife
along the way as you never know when a curious elk might wander onto the road.

Sunday, 16 September 2018, #LuftMUC @ Werksviertel Mitte
After five annual shows in Los Angeles, and a successful maiden European event held in England in late
July, we're ready to head to Porsche's homeland: Germany. We will touch down in Munich and get
ready to pull together another event, this time with some different ingredients.
The venue, Werksviertel Mitte, is a rapidly changing urban development in eastern Munich. As the
industrial heritage of the neighborhood is redeveloped for mixed use - new construction office buildings,
vibrant restaurants and public spaces – there is a gritty and artistic pop-up vibe happening this summer.
Air-cooled Porsches will be displayed throughout a compact series of indoor and outdoor spaces, set
amongst a temporary container development, urban plazas and vivid public art.
Like past shows, this show will feature a blend of curated, pre-selected rarities and ticketed enthusiasts’
cars. General public entry to the event is free and open, but car owners interested to display their air-
cooled Porsches will need to submit details about their cars to the organizers for selection and curation.
We will be accepting car submissions for owners who wish to display their car at Luftgekühlt.
Submissions are open until September 5, and owners who have had their car selected for display will be
notified by email and sent a ticket purchase link. A paid ticket costing €35 is required for parking and
displaying your car within the Werksviertel venue.
For all event and ticket info, head to: https://luftgekuhlt.com/luftmuc
To submit details of your car please go to the ticket option at https://luftmuc-by-
luftgekuhlt.eventbrite.de and select "Zeig uns dein Auto."

cars, and which includes a merchandise area. Due to the local regulations, we are required to charge a
fee of €2.50 to enter the exhibition hall, however the fee can be applied to any merchandise purchase
made inside.
We have been totally humbled and blown away by the passion and support for our events Stateside and
in the UK and we are looking forward to sharing the love with our community of friends and Porsche
legends in Germany. We hope to see you there!

You do not want to miss this unforgettable journey through the
best California countryside. Join PCA-SDR as we take a week-

counties. This event was incredibly successful last year (despite
the last minute change in destination due to the fires) and it is
time to do it again! (See your December Witness for the write-
up on 2017.) We will caravan through some of the most
beautiful roads in the state as we travel to and from wine
country, followed by terrific driving tours and other adventures
of all kinds during our stay.
Mark your calendars: The tour will begin on Saturday, October 27, 2018 and return to San Diego on
Sunday, November 4. Lodging for all 8 nights is included in the price and as well as four group dinners

Santa Rosa will be home for half the week, which is an easy drive to many of the best wine regions
California has to offer: Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Knights
Valley and Anderson Valley. In addition to wine, you will find Redwood forests, the phenomenal Pacific
coastline, and numerous small towns to explore.
The other half of the week will be in Napa Valley, the most famous and arguably the best wine country
in all of the USA. The Carneros wine appellation is also right next door, and the delightful town of
Sonoma isn't too far either. World class restaurants, world famous vineyards and amazing views await
you here!
Every day there will be an optional driving tour in the morning (this is a Porsche Club adventure, after
all). Come along with the gang; or skip it to sleep in, go to the spa or beat the wine tasting crowds by
starting early. Whether you choose to explore the local roads or not, afternoons will be free for wine
tasting or whatever else may interest you!
The cost of the Week is $ 2,899 per couple. (Single drivers, please contact me.) Price includes the tour, 8
nights of lodging, three group lunches, and four group dinners.
Space is extremely limited. Please sign up NOW and get your deposit in by clicking on this link:

The $ 500 nonrefundable deposit is to secure your spot. Balance of registration fee is due on or before

advanced and planning purposes. Should you need to cancel, you can transfer your tickets to someone
else who is willing to take your place. (There is sure to be a waitlist for this event!) Questions? Email

Oktoberfeste
Oktoberfest began as the celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I5) marriage
to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.6 The Bavarians enjoyed the party, but
decided that October was too cold, so they moved it to September. Oktoberfest seems to combine well
with German cars (wenn Sie nicht zu viel trinken Bier).
There are lots of Oktoberfeste to choose from:
185th Oktoberfest in München, 22 September through 7 October 2018
Obviously, the one in Munich is the original. One might expect Mädchen im Dirndl, there’s also
Armbrustschützen und Scheibenschießen7. It all takes place at die Theresienwiese im Zentrum von
München.

5 Ludwig I was not “Mad King Ludwig”—that was his grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig I was essentially overthrown in 1848 shortly after he attempted to tax beer. 6 From wikipedia.org 7 The first athlete disqualified from the Olympics for doping was a Swedish modern pentathlete who had “two beers” to “calm his nerves” before the pistol shooting portion at the 1968 Olympics.

The shift is on: Manual transmissions may be endangered but they're also
beloved
Shift into the high gear of your soul with a glance at some of the manuals still on the market. 2017 Porsche Carrera 4 GTS Gearshift (read review) – Photo: Robert Duffer/Chicago Tribune
From Chicago Tribune, by Robert Duffer • Contact Reporter, 11 July 2018, 11:01 AM
The tween riding in the back seat finally asked, “What is that thing you keep moving up there?”
She had never seen “that thing” known as a six-speed stick shift, a manual transmission, a manny
tranny, a handshaker, a Millennial theft deterrent. To her it was a relic, an oddity, a rotary phone thingy.
Manual transmissions account for just 2 percent of all vehicles sold in 2018, according to data from
Edmunds.com. In 2006, 47 percent of new models in the U.S. were offered with automatics and
manuals. Now it’s down to 20 percent and dropping sharply.
“For automakers it will be simpler when the manual dies,” said Ivan Drury, senior analyst at
Edmunds.com. “It’s kind of a hassle for them to offer both, same with dealers. Given the market forces,
it’s going to go away.”
Not too long ago, when push-button AM radios were infotainment and cigarette lighters were USB
ports, all cars had manual transmissions. In the ’50s during the boom of babies, cars and America, GM’s
Hydra-Matic automatic transmission made driving accessible to everyone. No need to worry about
grinding gears, stalling out or other operator errors.
In the half-century since, automakers and suppliers have advanced the automatic into something drivers
never have to consider. Modern automatics are quicker, more efficient, much easier to operate, and
better than most drivers. Call it progress, the inevitable inexorable direction of taking control from the
San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year
Weekly Update 28 August 2018
sgvr.pca.org 57 of 66 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR
driver for the sake of automation, which incidentally, was first offered way back in the ’60s in the form
of cruise control.
As consumers preferred the automatic, automakers stopped offering the manual to cut the costs of
offering two powertrains.
“We have seen that buyers aren’t asking for them,” said Mark Gillies, spokesman for Volkswagen. “We
had a manual option in the old Tiguan, but almost no one took it.”
There are few utility vehicles with a manual, including midsize pickups in the aging Toyota Tacoma and
Nissan Frontier, as well as the six-speed manual in the new Jeep Wrangler. That clutch pedal has firm,
almost abrupt kickback, and the gearbox is notchy enough to make it feel like you’re actually doing
something in a vehicle that can conquer territory without much insight from the driver.
The remaining manuals are in subcompact commuter cars or sports cars.
“In our value vehicles, there is still a market for cost efficiency with a manual than a little higher priced
automatic,” said James Bell, director of corporate communications for Kia.
But the manual take rate of 4 percent for the Rio, Forte and Soul is hardly a business case.
The new Kia Stinger performance sedan does not even come with a manual. The 365-horsepower rear-
wheel-drive fastback competes with German benchmarks such as the BMW 3-Series, which has a
manual with a take rate in the single digits.
“When you’re looking at performance sedans for 2018 everyone has switched over to DSG and modern
automatics or dual clutch gearboxes,” Bell said. “If you want to maximize performance and acceleration
of a car, an eight- to 10-speed gearbox is the way to go.”
Supercar-makers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini no longer offer manuals for performance reasons.
Even the famed Porsche 911, with its excellent PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, has a manual
take rate of just 20 percent.
“High-end automatic transmissions like the PDK drive better than you and make you a better driver,”
Drury said. “I don’t think a lot of people get to go out there and exercise the transmission the way it
should be.”
That’s as true on the street as it is in the virtual world.
“Even the video games are all PDKs,” said Mark Basso, founder and president of Autobahn Country Club
in Joliet. “When we opened 14 years ago, the vast majority of cars on our track — maybe 90 percent —
were manuals. Now I would guess it’s 60 percent automatics and climbing.”
Yet for some enthusiasts or iconoclasts and everyone we spoke to for this article, there’s no other way
to drive than with a manual. The numbers and the logic don’t matter. Rowing your own gears is simply
more fun.

“There is a feeling of great control as a driver, and there is the sheer physical pleasure of managing a
perfect shift,” said Gillies, who, as the former executive editor of Car and Driver, has had enviable
success on the race track. “I feel more in touch if I am operating the gears.”
Owners of the Ford Focus RS and Ford Mustang GT 350 must feel the same way. Those performance
vehicles only come with manual transmissions for now. The super fun and super smooth Mazda MX-5
Miata has a manual take rate of just under 60 percent, which is one of the highest take rates in the
segment, according to Jacob Brown, spokesman for Mazda.
Something is lost in the art of driving with an automatic transmission, some purists argue.
“Downshifting you learn to blip the throttle so the revs don’t stretch the pistons, that’s learning to drive
a sports car,” Basso said. “They’re taking that away from you.”
Even though Basso’s teen driving safety school at the Autobahn uses cars with automatic transmissions,
he advocates that everyone learns to shift. “It’s understanding the car,” he said. “When you have a
clutch you have a peek at the inner workings of the car. It’s not a toaster.”
It’s not just racers who appreciate a good shift.
“When the average person hears that you have a manual they think you’re some kind of Luddite,” said
Brian Moody, executive editor of Autotrader. “But understanding how the mechanical pieces work can
affect how you act and react behind the wheel.”
The next generation of drivers may not have as many opportunities to understand firsthand the
marriage of transmission and engine, but some stick lovers are intent on passing the knobby torch.
“I find it very rewarding, and everyone I’ve taught to drive manual has enjoyed it,” Drury said.
Gillies taught both his children how to drive stick and Bell was planning to do the same.
“Driving is not stab it and steer,” Bell said on the eve of taking his daughter to get her driver’s permit.
“It’s about appreciating mechanically what it takes to get up to highway speed and the respect for what
it takes to get speed. The recognition should encompass all your senses to not be distracted. It’s a safety
thing.”
It’s a fun thing too.

d’Élégance. In 2018, the same car, now owned by David and Ginny Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California,
and fresh from a recent restoration to its 1938 Berlin Motor Show appearance, won its class on the way
to capturing the ultimate prize: Best of Show at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance.
Introduced in 1937, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B was a detuned racing car for the street, based upon the
brand’s successful 8C 2900A, itself a kinder and gentler version of the 8C 2900 sports racer. Powered by
a supercharged 2.9-liter inline eight-cylinder engine, the 8C 2900B made 180 horsepower, down from
220 horsepower in the 2900A thanks in part to a drop in compression ratio from 6.5:1 to 5.75:1. Though
less powerful, the 2900B was still a sporty and exclusive car, now made more reliable for Alfa-Romeo’s
well-heeled clientele.
The Sydorick’s Alfa Romeo was one of 10 2900B models built atop the long-wheelbase “Lungo” chassis,
and one of five bodied as a Berlinetta — in aluminum over a tubular steel frame — by Carrozzeria
Touring of Milan. Completed in early 1937, it was revealed at the Paris Auto Salon, then shown at the
1937 Milan Auto Show and the 1938 Berlin Motor Show. Compared to later examples, this chassis,

412020, carries several distinctive design traits, including a steeply raked radiator shell, a lack of running
boards, and dual horns integrated into the front bodywork, positioned where driving lights would
typically sit on later examples.
Following its time on the show circuit, chassis 412020 was photographed for use in Alfa Romeo’s sales
literature. Its early history remains a bit unclear, but the car is believed to have been kept in Germany
through the war and into the 1950s. It may have been acquired by a British buyer postwar, but in 1956
the 8C 2900B was purchased by an American and exported to the United States for the first time.
Initially restored in the 1990s, chassis 412020 spent time on both sides of the Atlantic over the years
before joining the collection of David and Ginny Sydorick. Following its 2001 award at Pebble Beach, the
Alfa Romeo earned Best of Show at the 2003 European Concours d’Élégance and appeared at the 2010
Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Sydoricks’ Alfa Romeo beat two other finalists for Best of Show, including a 1929 Duesenberg Model
J Murphy Town Limousine owned by the Lehrman Collection of Palm Beach, Florida, and a 1948 Talbot-
Lago T26 Grand Sport Figoni Fastback Coupe, owned by Robert Kudela of the Czech Republic.
