KGW Bridge Promotion A Success: 35,000 Attend
Over 35,000 Oregonians attended that state's first and only "bridge happening" Sunday, Nov. 11, as part of KGW's "People's Day" celebration. The station's civic - minded promotion, done in conjunction with the Dept. of Highways, gave Portland citizens the opportunity to walk, Jog, bicycle, tricycle, or rollerskate across the new $62 million Fremont Bridge before it opened to regular vehicle traffic Nov. 15.
Crowds lined the approach to the 1200 foot span across the Willamette R!ver and braved rain an gusty winds to partake of arts and crafts displays, food and balloons, and entertainment from local rock band Rivergate.
KGW's Skyview Pilot plane flew overhead throughout the afternoon, giving up -to-the minute reports on traffic conditions and bridge activities, which included fireboats
KFOX Jock Really On The Mr Sunday Hal McClain, morning drive man at
Long Beach's KFOX, has taken on a unique and daring challenge. He intends to break the record, if one exists, for the number of consecutive mid-air loops made in a single -engine airplane.
McClain's feat of skill is scheduled to take place high in the sky off the shoreline of Long Beach and in full view of KFOR's International Towers studios, Sunday, Dec. 16.
ese LOOPS If he makes the five to six hundred
loops he expects to make in his Pitts "Penzoll Special," he'll establish a record for which there's been no official precedent, plus get himself 3 spot in the next Guineas Book of World Records.
Keeping in mind the seasonal angle behind the promotion, KFOX is promoting the morning man's air acrobatics by asking everyone who turns up to watch to bring a toy with them; members of the local Marine Reserves will be on hand to collect the toys for distribution in their Christmas "Toys For Tots" campaign.
McClain himself is asking listeners and flight watchers to donate pledges in the neighborhood of 25 cents to a dollar for each loop e makes. He'll turn the money over to the University Women's Club Braille program, to provide funds for the printing of books for the blind.
"The idea for the whole thing came - -aa,,rgida AAA
to me several months ago when I was working at KULF in Houston," McClain said. "I brought the idea up to the PD there because I thought it would be a good promotion. He told me it was "asinine' and turned thumbs down on it. Two days after I'd brought it up. he changed my air shift

RADIO FCC Warns KKDJ On Contest Security
KKDJ -Los Angeles was warned by the FCC that security will have to be tighter for future promotions. The situation arose from a misunderstanding over the station's "Phrase That Pays" contest some Ume ago.
As PD Rick Carron tells it, "It happened about its months ago. Someone visiting the station happened to see the secretary typing ont the names and phone number of the people we'd Intended to call for the contest that week."
"The person saw a friend's name on OW list, called the guy up and told bin KKDJ would be calling him at such - and -such an hour on this particular day. As it happened, we called the guy, be answered with the phrase and be won. To our knowledge, the guy was a legit winner; we weren't aware he'd been tipped off."
"This was six months ago. Recently, the guy who won evidently got a bad conscience, and he called us up and explained what had happened. We notified the FCC about the thing. No citation wu issued, but we wen told to conduct our contests with more security and keep lists and such out of sight of non-station personnel. That's all."

WCFL Radio - thon Exceeds $100,000
Chicago's WCFL, which had announced a goal of OMAN for their 1973 Aid to Leukemia Stricken American Children radio-thon, managed to outdo themselves and came through with a total pledge sum of slightly over $10,990.
The radiotbon started Saturday morning, Dec. 1, at le a.m. and was scheduled to run uninterrupted through Sunday evedag at le p.m. As it turned out, the outlook was so good Sunday afternoon they decided W go to midnight. Last year the promotion lasted thirty -six hours and amassed only about MAN in pledges. By 18 p.m. Sunday night this year, M,Mg had been collected.
The nonstop broadcasting marathon, done in association with Danny Thomas and Memphis' St. Jude's-Children's Research Hospital which the performer founded some years ago, drew the cooperation of many national and local celebrities. Among those who contributed, by answering phones at WCFL's studios, were Lou Rawls, comedian Don Knott', singer Lis Torres, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Brenda Les, Frankle Avalon and Thomas himself. Chicago area newspaper columnists Iry Kupcinet, Norman Mark and Maggie Daly also participated.
WCFL's staff managed to contribute $5N from their own pockets. Paul Kirby, Tom Murphy, Bob Dearborn, Larry Lujack, Ron O'Brien, Dick Saint and Dick Shannon.
Once collected, the U1M,40 in donations will go to ALSAC for St. Jude's hospital funding. The Memphis facility carries on research to further the development of prevention and cure of leukemia, childhood tumors, sickle cell anemia, and various blood and muscle disorders affecting young children.
Changes At WLOA Purely TechI cal
WLOA AM AND FM- Pittsburgh making plenty of technical changes. "We're not about to change our "Soft MOR' format," says GM BIB Matta. "But the changes we're making, aside from improving our AM signal somewhat, should give us the best FM signal in the Pittsburgh market." Among five major FM changes the station is undertaking; top- mounting of a new circularly -polarised antenna, increasing the height of the antenna (making for a denser signal), and tripling transmitter power... The new transmitter, dubbed "Big Max," is the biggest in Pennsylvania. Says Matta, "When we're finished with these improvements, there shouldn't be a single FM radio anywhere in the Pittsburgh area, either component - type, portable or FM car radio, that won't be able to pick up 'WLOA Stereo FM 97' and hold us strong and clear... In fact, the way this whole installation is going, you just might start picking us up on your electric toothbrgsh."

The following is Interview between Bob Wilson and Rea Jacobs. Former P.D. of [HJ, Rea for the past two years has created the new [GB FM -AM format. Ron has worked as a jock and P.D. In Hawaii, Fresno, San Bernardino and Los Angeles. ['sewn V his heyday at [Hi to be seen la T- Shirt sad blowing a whistle at his jacks. Has be mellowed? ... Read ma.
R&R: Let's begin with what you're trying to accomplish with [GB today.
Jacobs: KGB is fairly unique in that we have both an AM and an FM station in the same market, under the same ownership, but the two don't run in opposing directions. They complement each other.
On April 1,1072, we got both stations together on the theme of recycling; we got KGB AM out of Its burned-out Boss Radio Top 40 trip, and tried to put it on a broader base, with more, contemporary, tastier music format. On August 1, 1072, we began simulcasting the two stations, 24 hours a day. Then, last December, we went to the normal pattern of 50 percent simulcasting.
These were recognised as the first 3
steps of "recycling KGB." We changed the simulcast set -up the day after the last ARB concluded, because we felt there was a further, fourth step we had to take.
It appears now that the best way for us to streamline the whole operation, Is to simulcast in the morning (when FM listening is still at its weakest), then split the stations at 10 AM. We run the FM as a strict FM the rest of the day, and on the AM, from 10'tÚ 0 PM we're going after a mellower audience, on the basis of total demographics available. It should be dynamite, when we combine what we know we can get from a good FM station, with what you can get from a "progressive AM." At it PM, we rejoin both stations and simulcast the rest of the evening.
RAR: Where do you expect the AM to pick up Its aadienee from?
Jacobs: A) From the people who don't have FM's, B) from people in their cars where FM penetration is low.
RAR: Musically, the two statuas are different.
Jacobs: They're not totally different, but their differences are greater atter 10 in the morning. For the last 4 months, we've had clerks at the Wherehouse record stores (5 or e
San Diego stores) stuffing our questionnaires into every bag that goes out of the store. We've already gotten back 4050 cards answering questions like: 'what album did you buy? What wu your favorite cut? Who's your favorite artist? What was the last concert you attended? How old are you? Sex? Favorite station ?, etc.'
We got down to very specific Information on taste preferences based on the demographic breakdown, and we're aware of the fact there are certain artists with whom you can score points with females, and there are other artists who'll tend to drive females away. Were acting now as if we were an AM only.
RAR: AM Is females and males, whereas FM Is mostly males.
Jacobs: Yeah, With AM, we're concerned with the potentiality to get females, and with FM it's a matter of the automatic audience you get if you're really good for males.
We don't have to worry about driving away the females on FM, because female FM listening in the daytime isn't that great a factor, and If you go too soft on FM in the

daytime, you're not going to be doing what the guys have come to expect from an FM.
RAR: Hew did you ems' from Miss the king of the flagship Tip N AM station la the country, where you were the PD, the ereatmr, the ens wb instituted meek of the creative werk there, to be where you are tedny, which is quite ways from that whole thing?
Jaeebs: It wasn't push- button change. One day I came home from work when I was PD of KW, and I
found my wife listening to KPPC, I realised that what I was doing as a gig was inconsistent with my own lifestyle. From then on, while I
considered KHJ a very professional kind of gig, I felt I was compromising myself.
RAR: Would you go back to doing top N?
Jaembs: For more money than anyone's got. Top 40 today 1s
offering, because what you have is a bunch of second -string, zero: - copyin8:' non-innovative types that will take some ad lib of Robert W. Morgan's five years ago, and try to carve the thing in marble as If that were the overall nswer u to how to program successfully. There's so much jive.
I happened to read, in an Interview in RAR, where some programmer was bragging about how he's copyrighted something which Is a one - liner I jotted down as part of the job back at KHJ in '07, and. that's the answer to your question. Who are the imaginative programmers In Top 44 radio today? There aren't any. There's only handful of guys who
know bow to do that particular thing well, and most of them are making too much money to ever go back to It.
II all of a sudden, I found myself the PD of a Top 40 station with only the dull challenge of, uy, beating WABC or KHJ, I'd find myself not leaving the station until I'd come up with something that was dynamite; and It wouldn't be that hard, because everyone else is doing copies of copies of copies.
R&R: Everyeae's doing their version of the 'Instant Ripoff . That's the biggest tides around.
Jacobs: I saw that kind of thing happening within RIO; people were just running variations on what we were doing at KHJ. There are endless ways of doing it.
MUSIC Jacobs: The easiest thing about
Top 4e is the music. If you've been running a station before, and all you have to do now at Top 40 is narrow the list down to 17 to 21 records, it's easy. It's a matter of discipline, and having good people with a clerical mentality. To play these super -tight lists requires no special talent.
There's no complexity to rotating 17
things in a rather small circle. What we're doing here, what "progressive" stations have done when they try to get their shit together, requires a little more intelligence, because of the wealth of product available, the different kind of bags, because of the documented preferences people of varying age, sex groups have shown.
AUDIENCE INVOLVEMENT RAR: When you were at [HJ, you
managed to get a high degree of aedtnee involvement in most of the
promotions yea did, from the Big
Gkau to the sea crake to Catalina Island. Am I correct In assuming you've always found aadleace involvement to be a worthwhile seal?
Jacobs: I've always believed in
audience participation, but I don't believe It as coming down to a
'Huzzword' cliche in an interview. When I was a jock in Honolulu, standing at a main Intersection wearing a mu mu and carrying a plastic bucket, trying to get people to donate to a charity, that's audience involvement. I learned it from the beginning; if you're dealing with an audience, and you don't interact with them It's stupid.
"'HOMEGROWN" RAR: You've been one et the few
programmers I know to involve progressive audiences en a large stale. With the Charity Bali, and the "Homegrown" album.
Jacobs: I don't like the word "progressive" attached to FM or AM radio; there's a certain stigma attached to the term that conjures up an image of the first people who got into FM. They were probably righteously groovy people, but they weren't radio progresslonals. I don't like to describe our audiences as "progressive." Music is always for kids, and kids are just the young people reacting to what's popular at the time.
As far as the HemegrewaLP, If it's there and they dig it, people are going to participate. For KGB to sell 15,000 copies of that album at a time when there's a vinyl shortage is reflective of that fact. We drew 52,000 people in San Diego Stadium last year for the Charity Ball.
Now we couldn't get into audience Involvement on that kind of scale, uy, in Los Angeles, because of the general size of the population. The first day I was at KHJ I was handed a list by the manager, and it contained all the items which the FCC had just ruled as not being too highly recommended In the way of audience involvement promotions; most of them were things we'd already done in Fresno and San Bernardino.
That kind of stuff wu fun, though. Chuck Blore's "Amoeba" promotion in L.A. was incredible. I was doing that stuff before I came to KHJ. We had 30,00 people following the jocks, marching back and forth between San Bernardino and Riverside, when I was at KMEN.
GENERATION GAPS
RAH: You made comment earlier about "U you're outside mf
generation, It's very bard to keep fa touch with It."
Jacobs: I'm saying that that's an observation a lot of people who realise they're slipping away from the 'happening' generation seem to make. Statistically, I'm outside of the generation that's happening right now; therefore, I've got to rely more on younger people and pay more attention to the things I would have instinctively felt tea years ago. It' no accident that all the other guys who work here are at least 15 years younger than me.
RAR: Are yen saying yma're the designer and maybe the chief meehante, but yen have ether people working under yea, to supply you with all the parts?
Jambs: That's one way to put it. It's more complex than that, though. There are some top -flight people here; Mike Brown Is my age and we can talk on a similar level, and yet

Hot: "Daddy, What If "- BOBBY BARE (RCA); many adds and a great deal of listener response. Play: New JONI MITCHELL, "Raised On Robbery" ( Elektra- Asylum); aew RONNIE DYSON, "I Think I'll Tell Her" (Columbia); AMERICA, "Rainbow Song" (WB). New DIANA ROSS, "Last Time I Saw Him"
(Motown) getting top picks right away. Also getting good action, DYLAN'S "A - Food Such As I" (Columbia). For comedy, be aware of the new BOB HOPE 1p on Bell, Holidays, containing
the best of his material (fortunately, he's not singing). Good requests: CLIFF DE YOUNG'S "Sunshine" (MCA), and SIMON PARK OR- CHESTRA'S "Eye Level".
