Dear Friends in Christ:
During his visit to Brazil, Pope Francis said, “The measure of the
greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need” (World
Youth Day, 25 July 2013). He continues to draw us to Jesus Christ living
among the poor and vulnerable, calling us to solidarity with all those in need.
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) responds directly to
this call by addressing the root causes of poverty in the United States.
CCHD, founded in 1970 by the U.S. Bishops, serves as a domestic
anti-poverty program seeking to eliminate poverty by creating sustainable sys-
tems and building solidarity in communities. In essence, CCHD exemplifies
the practical application of Catholic social teaching by funding community and
economic development programs across the United States to improve the lives
of individuals, families and neighborhoods. Participation in CCHD - by means
of awareness, donation and prayers - is yet another way of carrying out the
three-fold mandate to See, Judge, Act, as set forth in the Indiana Bishops’
Pastoral Letter, Poverty at the Crossroads: The Church’s Response to Poverty
in Indiana.
The annual collection, to be held on the weekend of November 21-22,
is the primary source of funding the CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and educa-
tion programs. Such funding, 25% of which remain in the diocese, offers new
hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the U.S. Please help to
defend human dignity and show Christ’s charity to those in need. For more
information on CCHD, I encourage you to visit www.povertyusa.org.
Blessings in Christ

In the October envelope packet was a green envelope marked “St.
Mary’s Cemetery Maintenance.” Money received from this
collection helps take care of mowing and other maintenance items
throughout the year. If you do not receive envelopes and would
like to make a donation, just put your check in a regular envelope
and mark “cemetery” on it. We have a beautiful cemetery and we
would like to continue to keep it that away. Thanks for your do-
nation.

Prayer for Veterans
Heavenly Father,
On this day, help us remember those
Who gave of themselves to keep us safe and secure.
Enkindle in our consciences a desire
To serve those who served their country selflessly.
Give us the grace to aid those
Who have given aid and protection to us and
Others both here and overseas.
Let us never forget the causes for which they fought
Or the bravery they showed on the battlefield.
May we always be mindful of those
Who paid the price for our freedom, just as your Son
Gave His life to free us from the bondage of sin. Amen.
Dear Parish Family,
Several people recently asked what the candle represented before the altar during All Saints and through this past week. This brought several to ask,
“Why do Catholics light candles?” Both light and fire are rich symbols used throughout the Bible; Christ is referred to as the Light of the world. It is
not surprising that we also use the image of light and fire in our liturgy. On Holy Saturday, we bless the fire from which the Paschal Candle is lit. The
Paschal Candle, also known as the Easter Candle is lit for every Mass during the Easter season to proclaim that Christ is risen. The Paschal Candle is
also used during funeral Masses.
At our baptism we receive a candle that is lit form the Paschal Candle. The priest or deacon says, receive the light of Christ. Both the godparents and
parents are given the responsibility to ensure the light of Christ and His teachings are made present for the child to see and learn. In Matthew’s Gospel,
we hear Christ instructing us not to leave our light under a bushel basket but rather on a lamp stand for all to see.Another candle that is present in our
worship space is the Sanctuary Candle. It is kept burning day and night, whenever the Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle. The Sanctuary Candle
usually has a red globe around it and is located next to the tabernacle.
Lighting candles has always been popular in Catholic devotion practices. In churches, chapels, and shrines there are designated areas where the faithful
can light a candle before a sacred image. These candles are often referred to as vigil candles. Once you light a candle you should offer a prayer. Your
prayer may be asking for God’s grace, asking for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary or any of the saints for a particular need. It is customary to
leave an offering for the candle to cover the cost of the candle. In most cases the cost of the candle is indicated.
The lit candles serve as a visual to our prayers. The candle keeps “vigil” in the church, chapel, or shrine when we are not able to be present. We should
continue our prayer although we leave the sacred area of a church, chapel, or shrine. The candles join the others with a sea of amber glows symbolizing
the prayers of our community of faith rising to heaven. Like incense our prayers rise to heaven. When you see an area of vigil candles say a pray for the
intentions of those that are lit, light a candle yourself and say a prayer.
We sense God’s presence in our lives through the senses of sight, touch, smell, sound, and taste. Our liturgy is enhanced when we fully participate in
all these senses. This is one reason why light and candles are a part of our liturgical practices. After writing this article I am going to light a candle for
the intention of all the people to whom I minister. May God bless you!
Yours in Christ, Fr. Gary E. Kaiser
