What is a pilot programme?

A pilot programme is an organizational structure that embraces:

• The whole conception.

• Feasibility.

• Prototype development.

• Piloting and deployment of cases.

Pilot programme 1: Mitigation of water stress in coastal zones

Coastal zones occupy less than 15% of the earth's land surface.

They accommodate more than 60% of the world's population.

It might be a conflict between the needs of:• Local industry.• Agriculture.• Tourism.• The environment.

• Prevention of deficit, use of alternate water resources and artificial recharge.

• Mitigation of salt-water intrusion.

• Monitoring network, control of pollution.

• Optimisation of borehole infrastructure for ground water abstraction.

Increasing urbanisation:

More than 50% of the population will live in urban areas.

Some issues:

• Rainfall management.

• Balancing water demand with environment.

Agriculture is an essential challenge: 9 billion people will have to be fed.

The demand of water is growing,

Increased agriculture productivity: development of new water management tools, improvement of sustainable production methods…

• Water supplies: safe use and reuse of water in agriculture.

All industries need to be more efficient in the use of water.

• Closing water cycles.

• Reducing pollution (carbon impact) and water costs.

Pilot programme 5: Reclamation of degraded water zones

Natural resources must be protected: ecological quality in Europe is a concern (The Water Framework Directive).

Research needs:

• Development of techniques.

• Development of optimal strategies.

• “Best practises” guideline.

Pilot programme 6: Proactive & corrective management of extreme hydro-climatic events

Longer dry periods and more intense rainfall events will change the demand of water.

Research needs:

• To protect the environment and the populations.

• To develop forecasting hydro-meteorological aspects.

The WssTP aims to twin these 6 pilot programmes and implementation cases through partnerships with developing countries.

National governments are more and more interested by the WssTP's researches.

From fundamental Research to implementation for the benefit of all users:

• Technological methods are not enough.

• Innovative solutions must be developed.

The Board:• College A: Industry, has the majority.

• College B: R&D, Academics.

• College C: Users, Associations.

Board Members are elected by each college.

It is the deliberative and decision-making body.

It implements the strategy of the platform decided by the General Assembly.
