LEGITIMATE POWER

"Positional power", it is the power of an individual because of the relative position and duties of the holder of the position within an organization.

REFERENT POWER

power or ability of individuals to attract others and build loyalty.

It's based on the charisma and interpersonal skills of the power holder.

EXPERT POWER

is an individual's power deriving from the skills or expertise of the person and the organization's needs for those skills and expertise.

REWARD POWER

it refers to the degree to which the individual can give others a reward of some kind such as benefits, time off, desired gifts, promotions or increases in pay or responsibility.

COERCIVE POWER

is the application of negative influences.

It includes the ability to demote or to withhold other rewards.

WHY DO PEOPLE WANT POWER???

NIETZSCHE’S THEORY

Nietzsche believed that the will to power is the main driving force in

humans:

..achievement, ambition, the striving to reach the highest

possible position in life, are all manifestations of the will to power.

-MACHIAVELLI

“It is much safer to be feared than loved..,”

- He tend to believe that attaining

power requires force, deception, manipulation, and coercion.

- a new science of power has revealed that power is wielded most effectively when it’s used responsibly by people who are attuned to, and engaged with the needs and interests of others.

- -research suggests that empathy and social intelligence are vastly more important to acquiring and exercising power than are force, deception, or terror.

Self ActualizationMaslow stated that human motivation is

based on people seeking fulfilment and change through personal growth. He described self-actualized people as those who were fulfilled and doing all they were capable of.

The growth of self-actualization refers to the need for personal growth that is present throughout a person’s life. For Maslow, a person is always “becoming” and never remains static in these terms. In self-actualization a person comes to find a meaning to life that is important to them.

“Want of power is not necessarily evil, but

natural; of course we want to rule our own lives. It is a common necessity that all humans share - this is not

an evil as long as we do not misuse the power we gain”.
