Motcombe Village Fete
Save the date - Saturday 16th June.
The Motcombe Fete is going to be a SELL OUT this year. We’re so excited about this year’s plans and thank you for the huge amount of
interest and help we are already getting from around the village and beyond.
We’re going to have 2 arenas, a chill out Mad Hatters tent, an amazing BBQ and fully stocked bar. We have lots more fun stalls including 'welly wanging',
spinning wheels, cakes stalls and even snail racing.
A highlight this year is Pig Racing and also the Dog Agility (so do start training your pup).
Both village schools and North Dorset rugby club will be keeping the main arena
busy with various shows. Don’t forget to enter the Scarecrow making competition too (more info below).
We have even booked the sunshine so we’re hoping for a brilliant family fun day
out.
This is YOUR FETE – for the people, by the people of Motcombe. We need your
help to make it the best possible. Please, please do drop Scott a line if you can help in any way, big or small - scottij70@gmail.com or 07900057119. Please,
please call.
There is still time to have a stall but would ask that if you want to get involved
please contact Debbie Case before 20th May via email bgdebs@outlook.com.
We are open to anything. Hairbraiding, balloon art, crafts, homemade items, a fundraising idea for kids at low cost to mini zoos. Just let us know how you could
get involved and we can help with the rest.
If you know a business that would like to support the fete in some way please
contact Barney at barney@freshmarketing.eu. The Fete brochure is filling up and
there will be placards around the arena too. Commitment deadline 20th May.
Look out for the “Country Life” theme Scarecrows in the village from early May.
Applications will be available from the shop or by emailing Scott on scottij70@gmail.com .
We want as many on show outside your houses and in the street in the two weeks
leading up to the fete so that the village can do the Scarecrow village walk and score your favourite. We would like then ALL scarecrows to come to the fete for
the final judging of your top three.
Motcombe Village Magazine 268 Page 5 April 2018
This year why not help us brighten up the arena by designing and making at least
5 metres (16 feet) of bunting for Motcombe Fete’s Big Bunting Challenge
For the competitive amongst you, Georgie, the founder of Shaftesbury’s Big
Beautiful Bunting Company, will be coming along to judge the best adult’s and children’s bunting. Also, to assist everyone in making the best bunting they can,
she will be running a free “Crafternoon” at the Memorial Hall on Saturday 2nd
June at 2pm.
If you have a sewing machine, bring it along with your material offcuts and learn
the art of professional bunting making. If you don’t have a sewing machine, help will also be on hand for you to create your design. If you can’t sew or come
along to the Crafternoon, why not make some paper bunting.
Children’s prizes will also be awarded at the Fete. For more information contact Richard on 01747 858344 and look out for posters coming soon.
There will be plenty of posters around the village in the weeks leading up to the fete, but look out for entries in the "What's going on in Motcombe" page in
Facebook. We have even been considering a dedicated Motcombe Fete website
to share with villagers. We will keep you posted on that idea.
We are looking for helpers to support as much as possible with tasks such as
building tents on Friday and setting out, Marshalling and parking on Saturday, cooking, serving at the Bar, helping with teas and coffees and raffle. Many hands
and all that.
As always if you have any questions at all call Scott on 07900057119 or Barney
on 07730496947

Motcombe Seniors Lunch - 2018
Our thanks once again to Port Regis School & to Gill Ellis, their chef, for another
fabulous lunch in beautiful surroundings.
This event could not go ahead without our band of volunteers both on the day
and behind the scenes and we extend our thanks to them all and to those who
help to put the tables away afterwards. We have received some lovely letters of thanks from a number of you saying how much you enjoy the event and hope to
see the tradition carried on.
In addition to the very generous donation given for some years now, to enable
this event to continue, we have also been granted a donation from the Parish
Council this year and extend our thanks for both of these.
If anyone would like to join the committee, please contact Chris Francis 851293
or Rhona Rutherford 850242 as you would be most welcome and we look forward to seeing you all in 2019.

Motcombe Primary School
We have come to the end of our second term of the year at Motcombe Primary
School; the Spring term. Although we are yet to experience Spring weather, the children have all worked hard to learn about and celebrate Spring time and the
Christian celebration of Easter.
We held two Easter services in church which were well attended and enjoyed by
many family members. The children spoke confidently about their learning and
shared poems, songs and dances linked to the Easter story.
In lessons the pupils have experienced some fantastic topics this term ranging
from The Great Fire of London to The Vikings. Our Year 5 pupils held a 'Viking Day' which involved dressing as Vikings, cooking and eating Viking recipes and
making Viking jewellery.
Our school sport continues to go from strength to strength with our pupils
representing us well in many sporting competitions such as swimming galas and netball tournaments. This term we also held a dance-athon for 'Sport Relief' and
raised £174 for charity.
The children thoroughly enjoyed celebrating 'World Book Day' by dressing as
their favourite book characters all day, and coming back to school in their
pyjamas for a bedtime story under fairy lights with hot chocolate
We look forward to our summer term and some much anticipated sunshine

Motcombe Gardening Club
Well we have certainly had weather The first signs of Spring with daffodils,
crocuses, primroses were really visible then Wow everywhere was white not just for a few days once but then again Most of the flowers totally submerged in the
snow and then even when the snow went, there they were with kinked stems and
looking mighty unhappy But thankfully there were more flowers on the way and the splashes of yellow reappeared.
I notice there is some tree blossom on some trees around the village but no sign of anything on the trees in the garden - this only 9 days before the show. The
forsythia and quince have some flowers which is reassuring. Our Spring Show
is always a lovely evening so whatever the weather leading up to it we will just get on and enjoy ourselves.
Our talk in March had to suddenly change due to illness but luckily for us Alan
Eason from Floramour Gardeners stepped in at the last moment and we
thoroughly enjoyed hearing about and seeing slides of some lovely but less well-known gardens to visit in Wessex. I suppose between us we had seen all the
gardens but as individuals we have now some new places to go and visit - it was
a most enjoyable evening.
We will welcome back Katherine Crouch at our May meeting. Katherine is such
an amusing speaker as well as being very knowledgeable, so we are looking forward to her talk on Bulbs for Summer and Autumn. Then at our June meeting
Dawn Collins will discuss Capability Brown Visionary or Vandal? Should be
interesting
The new year of gardening spreads before us with so much we can do - probably
should do - but however keen or energetic you are it is always lovely to sit down sometimes and just enjoy your garden - whatever the size, whatever the style,
sharing it with the birds and the bees, ignoring that weedy patch, remembering
that stinging nettles are great for some butterflies, gazing at the flowers you planted and enjoying all the sensations of light, colour, shape, scent, chirping
birds, buzzing bees as you relax in your own patch of heaven.
We always welcome non-members to come along and visit us - please either
email me or ring for more information. Bev West motcombegc@gmail.com

Motcombe Neighbourhood Plan
Consultation on Sites for Development
At the heart of the Motcombe Neighbourhood Plan will be the sites within the
Parish that residents feel are those most appropriate in meeting the North Dorset District Council’s (NDDC) target for future new housing. All the sites that are
currently logged by landowners with NDDC have been extensively evaluated and
a short-list of preferred sites has now been drawn up.
Two drop-in events have been arranged where residents can see the list of
preferred sites and vote on the suitability and acceptability of each one.
SATURDAY 28th APRIL 11.30 to 3.30 at the MEMORIAL HALL
MONDAY 30th APRIL 2.00 to 6.30 at the MEMORIAL HALL
We hope the choice of dates will give as many people as possible the opportunity to drop in where members of the MNP team will be available to answer
questions.
This is an important milestone in the progress of the NP. The support of residents
is a key factor in moving the Plan forward. Your views are vitally important, and
you will have the opportunity to complete a short questionnaire on the proposals.
We will also be sharing with residents the key findings from last autumn’s survey
of residents.
Following the two drop-in sessions, the Team will be able to complete the draft
plan for further consultation with residents later this year before it is submitted to NDDC.
You can be sure of a warm welcome at either of the drop-in sessions – and a tea or coffee as you fill in your questionnaire. If you cannot get to either of the
sessions, information will be available on the Parish Council website from April
28th.

Live Event Streaming
We have now had three very successful screenings at the Hall and have had
tremendously positive feedback so far with people liking both the quality of the (live and recorded) broadcasts and the conviviality of the Bar. One person
commented on the very different atmosphere to commercial cinema created by
everything being run by volunteers with proceeds going to our Village Hall and Shop. If you haven’t been to a performance yet, please do come along.
Coming soon are:
Follies: Saturday 14th APRIL at 7.30pm.
Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies in this dazzling National Theatre production of Stephen Sondheim’s legendary
musical. Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, The Times described it as “a brilliant and beguiling show about…. the allure of glitter.”
Tickets: Adults £10, Children £7.50
Manon: Sunday 6th MAY at 2.00 pm.
A wonderful ballet from the Royal Opera House, Convent Garden. One of
Kenneth MacMillan’s most powerful dramas, set in Paris and New Orleans. The Daily Telegraph comments “It is an utter pleasure to watch dramatic dancing of
this calibre from so many dancers.” Bring the whole family.
Tickets: Adults £15, Children £10
The Audience: Saturday 12th MAY at 7.30pm
The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between 12 Prime Ministers and their monarch. From Churchill to May, each Downing Street incumbent has

which has been praised by the critics, has won numerous awards and reunites Helen Mirren with the writer of the highly acclaimed film The Queen.

Grant’s Copse: A Nearly Forgotten Place Name
Grant’s Copse was well known in my boyhood days in the 1930s because, in the
spring, it was a mass of bluebells which we used to pick.
It is situated near Frog Lane Farm. Passing the farm on the left and going
towards Bittles Green looking in the direction of Kingsettle, this copse can then
be seen.
It takes its name from James Grant, a partner in the brewery firm of Sir Benjamin
Truman, later to become Truman Hanbury and Buxton of Spitalsfields, London.
He owned a large house close by called Thornhills which had been bequeathed to
him by a friend, Richard Ewin. They are both buried in Motcombe church close
to each other with flat slabs and the inscriptions are quite legible. Ewin died in
1788 and Grant in 1789, which was in the time of the old church.
Thornhills was occupied for several generations by the Wykes family. They had
a private chapel in the old church as did the Whitakers of Palmers Place, later to
become Motcombe House. Thornhills was pulled down in about 1806 and the
stones and tiles were used to build what is now the old workhouse opposite the
old rectory.
An Apology
In my article in The Villager No. 262, July 2017, I wrote that Frog Lane was
once Higher Whitakers Farm and Shorts Green Farm was Lower Whitakers
although they belonged to the Whitakers of Palmers Place. They were in fact
Higher and Lower Grants, but were bought by the Whitakers in 1803.
I did know this so must put my error down to old age and apologise the error.

Motcombe Gardens Open Day
Sunday 3rd June from 12.30 p.m. - 6.0 p.m. 14 lovely gardens, plus the allotments will be open and cream teas will be
served. Families welcome. Children's Treasure hunt included.
All proceeds will go to Secondary Cancer Research and St Mary's Church
Motcombe Community Shop It seems that whatever weather is thrown at us, Motcombe Shop always remains
open. Bravo to all those stalwarts who braved it to the shop despite the snow drifts. It was very definitely business as usual and lovely to welcome some new
village customers who appreciated this great local hub. Special thanks go to the
many, many people who offered their help and assistance during the ‘snow crisis’ …a great community spirit.
The arrival of Live Streaming to the big screen at the Memorial Hall is a great boon to the village. It has also given the shop the opportunity to pack away the
aprons and don black tie to man a bar at the Live Streaming events. A perfect
showcase for the fabulous selection of wines we offer at the shop.

Villager 'Thank You'
The Motcombe Methodist Church has made a very generous donation towards
Villager productios costs from their January coffee morning proceeds. Their continued support is very much appreciated; so we want to thank them and
also all the coffee morning supporters who made it possible.

Motcombe Allotment Association
It is easy to get stale and out of shape through the (extremely long) winter
months. Yes, one can go on long walks, join the gym, or indulge in any number of activities to try to keep the muscles from seizing up but, unfortunately, I have
little interest in making any effort to do things that, frankly, I don’t enjoy. The
winter is bad enough as it is
My winter activities of choice are not conducive to assisting me in tying up my
own shoelaces. By the time April has arrived every part of my body is more or less insisting that I do something about it - or face the consequences
What, you may ask, has that got to do with the allotments? In short – Everything My enthusiasm for the plots and the whole site in general is positively feverish at
this time of year. I cannot wait to cut grass, cultivate, sow, tidy up and generally
enjoy the peaceful countryside, knowing that the excesses of the past few months and their encroachment on my ability to dress myself will be pummeled into
submission
I know I am not the only person who thinks like this. Gardening has always been
a pastime of leisure for many and we are so lucky to have our allotment site set in
wonderful surroundings. The pleasure and benefits it brings are countless.
For any budding allotmenteers I have good news: We have plots to let Be quick,
the enthusiasm is building
