REGIONAL BOUNDARIES OF TANZANIA
Tanzania in Figures 2010 Preface
ii
Tanzania in Figures booklet is the revised version from the previous
Tanzania in Figures booklets. This booklet is an extraction of information
from various statistical publications compiled by the National Bureau of
Statistics (NBS), Sector Ministries, Government Departments and
Agencies (MDAs). These statistics give an indication of current social and
economic trends in the country. Some of these latest figures are provisional
and may be revised. Reference should be made to more detailed published
sources and statistical data available at the NBS.
This 2010 edition of the booklet is based on information collected and
published by NBS and MDAs as at the end of December 2010.
In addition, we have replaced Business Survey 2007 general finding data
with data from 2010 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey report and
2007/2008 Agriculture Sample Census preliminary results.
The feedback we receive from data users of this booklet are vital in
ensuring that, we continue to provide appropriate data that meets their
expectations. We rely on you to ensure that we continue to provide you
with data that not only fulfils your needs, but is also presented in a concise
usable manner.

traditional herbal (Babu miracle cure) which cure chronic diseases such as
cancer, epilepsy, herpes, simplex virus, liver aliments, blood pressure,
diabetes, and HIV/AIDS with no formal medical training. The medicine is
prepared by boiling the roots of concoctions from the indigenous tree
known as Carissa echulis plant (MUGARIGA) with divine powers to treat
people, primarily against chronic diseases.

1Excludes children with parental status missing. TDHS data are based on reported
attendance, not enrolment. 2Refer to respondents who attended secondary school or higher and who can read a
whole sentence. 3For five-year period before the survey.
4For 10-year period before the survey.
5Among births in the past five years.
6High-risk sex refers to sexual intercourse with more than one partner.
7A person is considered to have comprehensive knowledge about AIDS when they say
that (1) use of condom for every sex intercourse and having just one uninfected,
faithful partner can reduce the chance of getting the AIDS virus, (2) a healthy-looking
person can have the AIDS virus, and (3) they reject the two most common local
misconceptions. The most common misconceptions in Tanzania are that AIDS can be
transmitted through mosquito bites and that a person can become infected with AIDS
virus by eating from the same plate as someone who is infected.
8The proportion of the population that own an insecticide-treated net (ITN)
9Prevention of malaria is measured as the percentage of children age 0-59 months that
slept under an insecticide-treated bednet the night before the interview. 10
Treatment of malaria is measured as the percentage of children age 0-59 months that
was ill with a fever in the two weeks preceding the interview and that receive an
antimalarial drug. The treatment is considered prompt if the child received the
antimalarial drug on the same day as the onset of fever or the following day.
11
Charcoal, firewood, straw, dung or crop waste. 12
Proportion whose main source of drinking water is a household connection (piped),
public standpipe, borehole, protected dug well or rainwater collection. 13
Improved sanitation technologies are the following: flush toilet, pour flush toilet,
traditional pit latrine, or ventilated, improved pit latrine.
