by STEWART GREENFOLLOWING numerous bids by developers to build on land in Sandbach it is unsurprising that properties are being demolished to make way for new houses. Residents could find however the bulldozers are arriving at the same time, flattening some of the town’s iconic buildings. Previously the town has lost Westfields, one of the homes of the Foden family, the Elworth Wire Works and recently 130 Congleton Road to make way for 160 dwellings. Plans are also in place to knock down the Wrights Printing Works leaving the main house to be converted into flats with an extension at the back.

Middlewich Road has also seen the demolition of buildings with the relatively new offices of Charles Church being flattened and next to them the demolition of the old Magistrates Courts and Police Station in Sandbach. Recently used as offices, the building was offered for sale in 2013 but withdrawn only to be offered to HB Community Solutions Living, who put in an application to demolish the building and erect a three storey accommodation building with 15 supported living apartments for people with physical and learning disabilities. This application was approved and the bulldozers moved in this month to remove the historic

building. The building has a colourful history which starts in June 1965 when the Sandbach police moved from their offices in Bold Street to rooms behind the Courtrooms in Middlewich

Road. By the end of the 1980’s court proceedings were moved to Crewe and soon after it was decided to sell the building to create a new temporary police station opposite.

by STEWART GREENVANDALS have left a trail of destruction at Brook Wood in Sandbach. Officially opened in March last year, the area between the Homebase roundabout and Coronation Crescent offered a pristine area for walkers to enjoy the country pathway. But this month vandals have hit the local beauty spot, dumping branches into the river along with barriers from roadworks on the adjoining estate. There was also evidence of drug smoking with drug spoons being removed from the rubbish in the water. There were also crisp packets,

sweet wrappers and general litter strewn over the walkways and benches, while a shopping trolley had been thrown into the river. One of the areas had also been set on fire. Dick Macaulay, of the Woodland and Wildlife Group, who along with others made the site a natural beauty spot, offered to arrange a gathering of volunteers to clear the area. They were joined by more volunteers including Daniel Williams who provided coffee for the workers. Once the river had been cleared Dick set the volunteers on a litter pick and general tidy up of the area.

by STEWART GREENTHE Lodge House of Abbey Fields has been partially demolished. Having recently been sold many hoped the old building would be renovated and used as a house once more. Last month permission was granted for the Middleiwch Road building to be partly demolished. According to the planning website, Sandbach Town Council and Cheshire East had no objections to the redevelopment of the building. So much of Sandbach’s history is being lost to developers and many will be sad to see another building bite the dust with a new extension and modern windows and doors. The estate of Abbey Fields is situated on the Middlewich Road and the large house was owned originally by the Abbey of Dieulacres (Monks) in the 13th Century. However the land around Sandbach was held by Richard

De Sandbache, who in 1230 was High Sheriff of Cheshire. By the late 1700’s Abbey Fields was the home of Colonel John Ford and it was he who rebuilt the main house in the early 1800’s to its present Grade 2 listed building along with improvements to the estate layout. Abbey Fields now had its own Gate House, which is being partly knocked down, and a Coach House. So much of the original building and estate has changed and now it seems the Lodge will also lose its historic status.

by STEWART GREEN SANDBACH’S Play In The Park event proved a hit once again with families this month. The event, organised by the Sandbach Partnership to entertain youngsters during the summer holidays, is becoming a regular feature in the Sandbach calendar. This year the event not only included the usual face painting, wild animals, games, wheelchair basketball, tennis and trampoline, but also a chance to do some pond dipping. Sandbach Park’s own wildlife expert was on hand to identify the stickleback and lava trawled from the bottom of the established ponds at the far end of the park. Also in use this year was the newly installed table tennis facility and boules court, which both seemed popular with children and adults. Youngesters particularly enjoyed seeing the albino hedgehog, snakes and lizards.

Supervised sports also proved popular in the park with hundreds turning up on the bright day to enjoy the facilities. Another popular attraction was the small fire engine Wellie 1, registered after Welephant the fire brigade mascot, the inspiration of Greater Manchester Fire Service which used it to promote awareness of the dangers of fire to local school children. The little fire engine, designed and built in Cheshire, was housed at Crewe but has recently become the responsibility of Sandbach cadets who were looking after the engine at the event. Wellie 1 was so popular that it was a full 40 minutes after the event closed before they were able to put it back inside the station after the children finished playing on it. Organisers described the event as another great success in the park, which has also recently gained Green Flag status as an outstanding area.

TWO people have been injured in a blaze outside a Sandbach property in Green Street. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say three fire engines, one from Sandbach and the others from Crewe and Middlewich, attended the scene shortly before 10.20pm on August 12. Investigators are now looking into the cause of the fire. A spokesman said at the time: “Using a breathing apparatus, crews used two hose reel jets to extinguish a fire outside the property. “All people were quickly accounted for and there were

two casualties. “A fire investigation officer is attending the scene of the incident.” In a separate incident that night, two fire engines from Crewe and one from Middlewich were called to the scene of vehicle fire on Third Avenue in Sandbach shortly after 11.40pm. Police and fire crews believe the vehicle was set alight deliberately. No-one was injured in this incident and fire crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reel jets to put out the blaze.

by STEWART GREENANOTHER piece of history is destined for the scrap heap as BT look to remove the red phone box on Platt Avenue. The iconic K6 phone box will be removed on September 10 unless Cheshire East turn down the application to dismantle the iconic structure. Sandbach has another example of the K6 outside the Town Hall which has Grade 2 National Heritage Status because of its association with the designer Sir Charles Gilbert Scott.

He was the grandson of Sir George Gilbert Scott, the architect of many buildings in Sandbach, including the Literary Institute, Savings Bank, Alms Houses and Grammar School. Designed in 1935 by Sir Charles, the kiosk has become

an iconic part of many towns in the country but is now being lost due to the increase in mobile phones. However many feel we need to keep these historic structures in our towns to remind us of a previous era and for their iconic status. Although in need of a lick of paint and the replacement of some of the glass, it remains a part of the town’s heritage. Many of the K6 kiosks have been converted into book lending posts or turned into a design feature. This icon of British life was designed in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and is sometimes known as the ‘Jubilee Kiosk’. It was the first red telephone kiosk used outside of the London area with a total of 16,000 being installed between 1935 and 1940. Initially the phone box was not loved by all as many thought the Post Office red to be intrusive and so the GPO at the time allowed some areas of natural beauty to paint their K6s in grey with red glazing bars. However most kept the colour scheme and it is now reproduced in souvenirs, coin boxes and postcards as iconic as the red London bus..

FOLLOWING the departure of Rev Kim Stilwell at the beginning of August, the Methodist Circuit has been waiting for its new minister to take up his position in September. Rev Jeremy Tresise (pictured), his wife Lis and their three sons Joseph, Nathaniel and Nicholas will be moving from St Andrew’s Church in Bramhall where he started as a probationer a few years ago.

He was also the co-ordinator for the New Horizons project based at St Andrews Manse, Wythenshawe in Manchester. Jeremy has been with the Bramhall and Wyhenshawe circuit for the past five years and will take his first service in the Sandbach Circuit on September 6 at 10.30am at Elworth Methodist Church on Middlewich Road. There is also to be a Sandbach Mission Area welcome service at Elworth on the evening of September 13 at 6.30pm to officially welcome him to the area.

CIVIC leaders visited Sandbach last month for the town’s annual civic service and procession. In honour of Town Mayor Gill Merry, the parade started on Scotch Common and followed the road through the town past the Town Hall and on to the War Memorial where Gill laid a wreath. The various local dignatories then headed to St Mary’s, where a service was conducted by Rev Thomas Shepherd. This included readings from the Mayor of Sandbach and

Councillor Natasha Simpson, who represents the Sandbach Heath and East ward. This was followed by light refreshments at the Town Hall. Those in attendance included the Mayor of Cheshire East, Hilda Gaddum, Congleton Mayor Elizabeth Wardlaw and her Mayor’s Cadet Charlotte Frost, Knutsford Mayor, Tony Dean and Winsford’s Deputy Mayor David Edwards, along with representatives of the British Legion. The procession was led by the Cheshire Police Band.

STUDENTS and staff at Sandbach School have been celebrating another successful year of outstanding A-level results. The school recorded almost a 99% pass rate, 54% of grades at A*-B, and 26% of grades at A*-A. Head teacher Sarah Burns said she was delighted with the results. She said: “We are so pleased once again to see some excellent A level results, and importantly, the culmination of several years of hard work paying off as our students move on to the next stage of their education. “It is also great to see a number of students receiving their results in Edinburgh, where Sandbach School Theatre and Music is putting on four different

shows at the Fringe Festival.” Individual successes include head boy Owen MacCuish (A*,A,A) who is going to Durham to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Harry Mace, (A*,A,A,B), and James Pope (A,A,B,C) who is going to read Chemistry and Mathematics at Keele. Georgia Pickles, Alice Mountford, and Isobel Montgomery were particularly pleased to be receiving their results as the first female students to complete their A Levels at Sandbach School. All have achieved excellent outcomes and got into their first choice institutions. Mrs Burns added: “In all, twenty of our students achieved 300 UCAS points or more, seven of these achieving 400 points or more.”

SANDBACH RUFC got preseason off to a useful start with their first competitive game against local opposition Stoke. In the end Sandbach ran out comfortable victors, winning 67-17 against the battling Potteries side. Overall Sandbach’s greater

pace of movement and strong scrummaging proved too much and perhaps illustrated the difference of intensity that regularly playing in the division above gives the Cheshire side. Sandbach will be pleased with the performance despite making many changes.

In particular they demonstrated that despite having lost a couple of players in the close season, who have decided to give playing at a higher level a go, they still have a potent back division. Recent additions to the front row should help also help their

forward pack. Sterner testes will follow including a Cheshire Cup tie at home to Stockport and then a league opener away at Lichfield on September 5. The team’s first league home tie is on Saturday September 12 against Longton.

Great start
