History of the spreadsheet

• The word "spreadsheet" came from "spread" in its sense of a newspaper or magazine item (text and/or graphics) that covers two facing pages, extending across the center fold and treating the two pages as one large one. The compound word "spread-sheet" came to mean the format used to present book-keeping.

Electronic spreadsheet• The concept of an electronic spreadsheet was

outlined in the 1961 paper "Budgeting Models and System Simulation" by Richard Mattessich. The subsequent work by Mattessich and its companion volume, Mattessich applied computerized spreadsheets to accounting and budgeting systems (on main-frame computers in FORTRAN IV). Batch Spreadsheets dealt primarily with the addition or subtraction of entire columns or rows - rather than individual cells.

What is a Spreadsheet?

• A spreadsheet is an aplication that permits the user to manipulate alphanumerical data inside cells that are formed by the intersection of rows and columns.

• Spredsheet includes predetermined formulas and functions, these are a great help for complex operations

• It is also possible to create graphics.

Spreadsheet programs

Uses

You can use a spreadsheet for budgeting, as it will automatically tabulate mathematical equations (ex. adding, subtracting, multiplying, finding the mean average...) for you.

Spreadsheets can also be used to produce graphs and charts from the data you input into the different cells.

Spreadsheets are sometimes useful for sorting data either alphabetically or numerically, or by some other variable.
