Wilbur liked play fighting with his little brother because he was such a ‘good scrapper’. At school little Orville was often naughty and once he was expelled.

One day, while watching birds flying, Wilbur and Orville noticed that the birds kept adjusting the position of their wings.

When a bird wanted to turn, it lifted the front edge of one wing while it tilted the edge of the other wing down.

Having found the best wing design, they began working on propellers and a lightweight engine for their aircraft.
