and Customs of "TheGood Old Times. "

The tradesmen before the Revolu-tion

¬

were a different race from thepresent. They were none of themashamed of their leather aprons.Faded buckskin breeches , once ra-

diant¬

in yellow splendors , checkedshirts and red flannel jackets werethe common wear of most workingmen. All the hired women woreshort gowns and linsey-woolsey pet ¬

ticoats. Calfskin shoes were theexclusive property of the gentry. The servants wore cowhide. Tooth-brushes were unknown. The bettersort were content to rub the teethwith a chalic rag or with snuff. Itwas commmonly thought effemi-nate

¬

for men to clean the teeth at-all. . Not only the roystering cava-lier

¬

but the quiet citizens were fondof a certain bravery in dress. Menwore cocked hats and wigs , coatswith large - cuffs and bigshirts , lined and stiffened withbuckram. The coat of abeau had three large plaitsin the skirts , wadded profusely tokeep them smooth , with low col-

lars¬

to .show off the fine linen cam-brick stock , and the largest silverbuckle on the back of the neck. The shirt was ruffled to the wrists. The breeches had silver , stone orpaste buckles. Gold or silver sleevebuttons , set with stones , were gen-erally

¬

worn.No cotton fabricswere then known. Stockings wereof thread or silk in Summer and ofworsted in winter. Surtouts werenever worn , but they had clothgreat-coats instead , or brown camletcloaks , with green baize lining. Inthe time of the Revolution many ofthe American ofllcers introduced theuse of Dutch blankets for great ¬

coats. In winter gentlemen worelittle woolen muffs to protect theirhands. It was not uncommon tosee old people with large silver but-tons

¬

on their coats and vests , withtheir initials engraved on each but ¬

ton. The ladies all wore largepockets under their gowns ,and white aprons. No color butblack was ever made up for silk orsatin bonnets. Fancy colors wereunknown and white silk bonnetshad. never been seen. The use oflace veils did not commence untilthe present century. Ladies' shoeswere made of silk or russet , stitchedwith white-waxed thread and hav-ing

¬

wooden heels. The sole-leatherwas worked with the flesh side out.Subscription balls became very fash-ionable

¬

soon after the Revolution.-No

.gentleman under twenty-one ,

and no lady under eighteen was ad-

mitted.¬

. The supper consisted ef tea ,chocolate and rusks. Everythingwas conducted by .six married man¬

agers. They distributed places bylot and arranged the partners forthe evening. The gentlemen dranktea with the parents of their part-ners

¬

the day after the- ball , whichgave the chance for a mora lastingacquaintance.

Matrimonial Advertisements aHundred Years Ago.

That matrimonial advertisementsor bureaus are not-a recent arrange-ment

¬

the following advertisement ,published in 1750 , will show :

HTq THE PUBLIC. This'day , andon every Monday , Wednesday andFriday , will be opened at the Gentle ¬

men's Register Oflice , in NewcastleCo'urt , a true copy of the Ladies'Register for inspection , according tothe terms mentioned in the SeriousProposal fpr promoting lawful andhonorable rnarriacrc , where any gen-tleman

¬

, for one shilling , shall receivea ticket , which will entitle him toview the Register Books 011 any twodifferent days of inspection withinthe date thereof. The pamphlet to-be had at the said office , and at theLadies' Office , in SL Martin s street ,Leicester Fields , and at Mr. Owen's ,bookseller , near Temple Bsr. "

And in those days jilted loverssometimes revenged themselves in-a more public manner than they arewont to do' now. The following isfrom the General Advertiser of May15,1753 :

"WHEREAS , on Sunday , April 12-

lfQ , there was seen in Cheapside ,between the hours of Four and Fivein the Afternoon , a young Gentle-man

¬

dressed in a light colored Coat ,with a blue Walstcoot , trimmedwlth Silver Lace , along with ayoung .Lady In Mourning , going to-wards

¬

St. Martins near Aldorsgate ;This is therefore to acquaint thesame Gentleman (as a Friend ) to be-as expeditious as possible in the af-fair , lest otherwise he should unhap-pily

¬

meet with the same disappoint-ment

¬

at last by another stepping in-in the mean Time , as a young Gen-tleman

¬

was lately served by theaforesaid young Lady , who aftei aCourtship of Four Months last pass-ed

¬

, and that with her own Appro-bation

¬

, and in the most publiokManner possible , and with the ut-most

¬

Honour as could possibly be-come

¬

a gentleman. Take this Sironly as a friendly Hint , 1 amYours , Timothy Hint. "

This announcement appears to beone of a series of various forms.

Champion of the World. For Borne time past , says the De-

troit¬

Free Press , a Canada negro hasbeen walking around the CentralMarket and "blowing" how manymelons he could eat in a giventime. It was known that he waspretty heavy on melons , and theAmericau darkies had to take a-

back scat and bide their time.Thursday evening a steamboat -man , called "Black Betsey , " stoppedofi'here , where he lives , and" hap-pened

¬

around the market yesterdaymorning just when "lall Jack ," ofCanada , was blowing his harqeat-"Talking 'bout meluns ," surig out"Betsey ," " 'bout eatin' meluns !

Why , sir , I kju eat more ineluns-thau any two niggers in Kennedy !"|The terms were soon arranged ,!each contributed half a dollar , andthe dollar bought eighteen fairsized-n usk and. watermelons. They ?

were carried over to a shady spot onBates street and divided into twopiles , and it was agreed that theman who failed to eat hisWho quit the first , should j>ayforall. Uoth men took off their coats ,unbuckled their straps , { anawent to business. "You talkabout eating meluns ," sneered.-Betsey , as he ripped one in t roand, made about six mouthfuls of it-

."Yestalking'bputmeluns.

umph1 "replied Jack , slinging away a.rjoapof rind3. Nether of the contestantspad| any attention to watermelonseeds, eating them down , and tbeInterior of a muskrnelon was rakedo t at a handful. Neither 'faltereduntil after the fourth melon , when <

the Canadian began to pick out thesoedaandgoslow. His friends ral¬

lied him , and he got into the sixtnmelon as Betsy finished his seventh."Whoa ! boy ! what ails ye !" shouti

ed the crowd , as Tall Jack lookeddespairingly around and nibbledonce or twice at his seventh. Hemanaged to gulp down half of it,and then leaned back against thefence , slowly pulled out fifty cents ,handed it over and remarked :

"Somehow I doesn't fele like eatingmeluns to-day ! " Betsey tossedaway the rinds of the eighth , bitopen and went through the ninth ,and as he looked over and took thelargest one from the other pile heyelled : "Meluns , Mcluiu ! Tell 'em-to keep dat street car team out of thede way of dese rinds ! "
