Warm ups 10.03.2016*Use three adjectives (descriptive words) to describe the Northern Territories of Canada.

*Use three adjectives to describe the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence provinces.

Lesson Objective:*identify historical roots of Canada’s major cultural groups

*describe Canada’s policy of welcoming diversity while promoting unity

Canada’s National Identity*many people identify more with their regional or ethnic culture, rather than the nation as a whole

*most have British or French ancestors (about 40% and 27%, respectively)

First Canadians*the ancestors of the Inuit were the first people to migrate to North America thousands of years ago

*these people adapted to a wide range of environments

How Did They Get Here?*the most commonly accepted theory is that the first humans in North America arrived from Asia via the Bering Land Bridge

Diversity of First Nations

*some settled in along the Pacific Coast, some were nomadic hunters in the Arctic North, while others established permanent settlements along the Great Lakes and grew crops

Diversity of First Nations

Colonial Rivalries*the French and British fought each other in four different wars between 1689 and 1763

*the final one was the French and Indian War, sometimes referred to as the Seven Years War

French and Indian War

*What was the end result of the war?

*This war also had a role in leading the U.S. into rebelling against England

Ties to Britain*Canada remained under direct British rule until they were given the right to form their own government in 1867

*Canada became totally independent in 1931, although the British monarch is still their symbolic ruler

Conflict Between Two Cultures*when France lost its empire in what is now Canada, around 70,000 French colonists remained in the area

*since then, the French-Canadian population has grown to make up about 25% of Canada’s population

Multiculturalism*the British government passed laws in 1774 to ensure that French Canadians could maintain their own laws, language, and culture

*this continued when Canada became independent, but today many French-Canadians feel discriminated against by the English speaking majority

Separatism*many people in Quebec (the province with the majority of French-Canadians) wanted to separate from Canada and become their own country

*the vote narrowly kept them a part of Canada (50.58% voted to remain in Canada, and 49.42% voted to become independent)

Pros and Cons of Separatism*Let’s brainstorm a list of pros and cons of the Quebecois separatist movement.

Welcoming Diversity, Promoting Unity*Canada has a history of welcoming immigrants from all over the world

*their practice of multiculturalism and being welcoming of other people is something that they take great pride in

Welcoming Refugees*Canada has agreed to welcome 35,000 Syrian refugees

*their goal is to take in 57,000 refugees from various countries in 2016

Welcoming Refugees*to compare that, the U.S. has agreed to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees, but is well behind that number

*Do you think that the U.S. should take a more welcoming stance toward refugees, like Canada does?

Islamaphobia in the U.S.?*Questions to ponder:

Does keeping refugees out keep our society safer?

Or, would being a more open and welcoming society help build better relationships with other cultures around the globe?http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/23/us/islamerica-secret-costs-islamophobia/index.html
