The Nervous System

• What did your nervous system have to do in order to perform the previous 2 tests?

Basic Functions of The Nervous System

1. Sensory Function: It senses changes (stimuli) within the body (internal environment) and in the outside environment (external environment)

Basic Functions of The Nervous System

2. Integrative function: It analyzes the sensory information, stores some of it, and makes decisions regarding appropriate behaviors.

Basic Functions of The Nervous System

3. Motor function: it responds to stimuli by initiating action in the form of muscular contractions or glandular secretions.

Warm up

•What would be an example of the nervous system providing a sensory function? Integrative? Motor?

BAV•Sensory function

•Integrative function

•Motor function

Divisions/Organizations of the Nervous System

Principle Divisions

1. Central Nervous System (CNS)

2. Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)

• *These are based on structure.

CNS

• consists of the brain and spinal cord.

PNS

• consists of cranial nerves (12 pair) coming from the brain and spinal nerves (31 pair) coming from the spinal cord.

Types of Neurons in the CNS and PNS

Sensory or Afferent Neurons

• Conducts nerve impulses from the body toward the CNS.

Motor or Efferent Neurons

• Conduct nerve impulses away from the CNS to muscles and glands.

Association neurons (interneurons)

• Carry nerve impulses from sensory to motor neurons.

• Located in the CNS and are the most numerous type of neuron.

Review

1. What is the name given to nerves carrying signals toward the brain?

2. Cranial nerves are part of what structural division of the nervous system?

3. What type of neuron is located in the CNS and connects sensory with motor?

Divisions of the PNS

Somatic Nervous System

• Carries conscious sensory information and voluntary motor information (skeletal muscles)

Autonomic Nervous System

• Carries unconscious sensory information and involuntary motor information (smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands).

• Regulates things like: heartbeat, blood pressure, respiration, and digestion.

4/11/16

•What is the most numerous type of neuron found in the nervous system?

•What is the difference between the somatic and autonomic nervous systems?

Divisions of the Autonomic Nervous

System

Sympathetic Division

• “Fight or Flight” response

• Increases heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.

• Decreases digestive function.

Parasympathetic Division

• “Rest and Digest” system

• Calms the body to conserve and maintain energy

• Decreases heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.

• Increases digestive function.

What division of the autonomic nervous

system is most active?

Autonomic NS Poster

• Create a poster to illustrate the 2 divisions of the autonomic nervous system, sympathetic and parasympathetic?

• 1 on each side of the paper.
