The Mission Statement of Our Savior is:
“SEE CHRIST THROUGH US”
Our Savior Lutheran Church members, through Christ, preach, teach, listen,
learn, and live so the world sees Christ through us.
Vol. 8, Num. 32 THE MIRROR OF OUR SAVIOR August, 2019
Dear Members and Friends of Our Savior,
This summer has brought great joy and great
sorrow to me as a pastor. It brings great joy in
celebrating with two congregations in our circuit at the
ordination and installation of their pastors; the great
sorrow comes in the two men who left their pulpits.
One dear friend took a call to Kansas, the other retired
from his congregation. We love our opportunity to get
together as brothers in Christ, whether it be our
monthly meeting gathered around God’s Word, or
enjoying down time at a barbecue or Cardinals game.
God provides for his people, and he provides for
pastors by giving us camaraderie and fellowship.
The Scriptures proclaim to us the joys and sorrows
of the pastoral ministry. We know that every job bears
its own set of burdens. Farmers bear the heat of the
day. Accountants are exhaustingly busy in the months
leading up to April 15th
. Emergency personnel are
always on call in case of an emergency. Every job has
its struggles. Jesus outlined the struggle of the pastoral
ministry in many ways. We heard one of those a few
weeks ago during worship: “And he said to them,
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to
send out laborers into his harvest. (Luke 10:2)” There
simply are not enough pastors for the work there is to
do. Congregations throughout the nation and world do
not have a called and ordained servant of the Lord.
Servants leave one congregation to serve another, not
necessarily because they wish to leave. Other
congregations are simply unable to support a pastor.
Jesus knew these burdens would be a part of every
generation.
Even among his disciples, Jesus saw the potential
for burnout. His disciples returned from preaching and
teaching as the Lord had sent them to do. When they
returned, Jesus attempted to give them some time
away, but it doesn’t always work out that way. “Now
many saw them going and recognized them, and they
ran there on foot from all the towns and got there
ahead of them. When he went ashore he saw a great
crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they
were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to
teach them many things. (Mark 6:33-34)”
Why do I bring this up? Because in all the sorrow,
the Lord continues to bring joy. There is sorrow when
a beloved pastor retires, and there is great joy when a
new servant is sent by God. There is sorrow when a
friend leaves, and joy when a new friend comes into
our lives. I rejoice that the Lord continues to care for
his people, sending out laborers for his harvest field.
While I miss the brother pastors who have left, I
rejoice in the new blessings the Lord sends. And, as
the Lord bids us to do, I pray that he will continue to
send workers into his harvest fields. I pray more
missionaries may be sent throughout the world, as the
Lord has sent Erin Mackenzie. I pray that our
seminaries be filled with men called by God to serve. I
pray God guards each and every man he sends to
preach the Word, that the devil may not be given a
foothold.
Here’s what you can do: pray! “the prayer of a
righteous person has great power as it is working.
(James 5:16b)” Please pray for the Lord to send out
more laborers. More faithful pastors are a blessing of
which we can never have enough! Starting in August,
we will begin praying for each church and their pastor
in our circuit, as we remember our brothers and sisters
in Christ throughout the Sedalia Circuit. Each week we
will pray for one congregation and pastor by name,
praying that their service in the Lord may be fruitful,
the salvation of many souls. Finally, as I hope you
already do, please keep me in your prayers. Pray that
God gives me wisdom and guidance as I serve you;
pray that he provides all that my family and I need;
pray that the Lord continues to provide great joy in all
my duties and responsibilities. And as people who live
in contentious times, where there are many things that
cause fear, pray with the early church as they did for
the apostles: “And now, Lord, look upon their threats
and grant to your servants to continue to speak your
word with all boldness. (Acts 4:29)” Pray as the Lord
has taught you, knowing that his good and gracious
will is always being done for you and for me!
The Lord be with you!
Pastor Tessone

LCEF, for more than 35 years, Lutheran Church
Extension Fund has partnered with hundreds of LCMS
congregations to provide space and place for ministry.
In many cases, this partnership involved an LCEF loan
for the purchase of land or the construction of a
building. It is only because of the support of thousands
of faithful investors that LCEF has been able to
provide this important support of LCMS ministries. If
you would like more information about how you can

AUGUST STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Have you ever noticed the subtle ceremony of
receiving the offerings during the Divine Service? The
offerings are collected in plates or baskets, and they
are brought forward and given to the pastor or an
assistant. The pastor turns toward the altar, and, as he
slightly bows his head, the offerings are raised slightly
to the Lord and placed on the altar or an adjacent table.
Why do we have this ceremony? And what does it
teach us? For that is what ceremony does – it teaches,
as the Augsburg Confession tells us what we need to
know about Christ (AC XXIV, 1–3).
Originally, this ceremony included more than
simply bringing forward what was collected in the
offering plates. The elements for the Holy Communion
– the bread and the wine – were brought forward with
the offerings. The offerings and elements were lifted
toward the Lord and placed upon the altar. The altar,
now made a table, would be set for the Lord’s Supper.
Gifts brought to the altar come from the sweat of
His people’s brow. They are the bread and wine, the
fruits of His people’s labor in this fallen world. After
six days of labor and toil, the people are to bring a
generous proportion for the Lord’s work. Gifts set
upon the altar are offered to the Lord for Him to take
up and press into service for His gracious work.
For what is offered to the Lord from the sweat of
His people’s brow – the bread of anxious toil – comes
back to us as the bread of life. The bread comes down
from heaven that whoever eats this bread and drinks
this cup will receive life through the forgiveness of
their sins.
This is not unlike what the Lord did for His people
in the Old Testament:
“You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that
comes from the field year by year. And before
the Lord your God, in the place that he will
choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall
eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of
your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and
flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your
God always. And if the way is too long for you,
so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when
the Lord your God blesses you, because the
place is too far from you, which the Lord your
God chooses, to set his name there, then you
shall turn it into money and bind up the money
in your hand and go to the place that the Lord
your God chooses and spend the money for
whatever you desire – oxen or sheep or wine or
strong drink, whatever your appetite craves.
And you shall eat there before the Lord your
God and rejoice, you and your household.”
(Deut. 14:22-26)
What a blessing! God provides for us in all things.
He provides bread from the sweat of our brows. He
receives this from us in the first-fruits offerings we
give to Him in thanksgiving and praise, and He turns
these into spiritual bread. He gives this heavenly bread
– the bread of eternal life – back to us so we might
have joy.
So, the next time you are in the Divine Service,
watch this ceremony in wonder. The offerings we have
given to Him, the Lord gives back to us in His supper
so that we may rejoice in the salvation He won for us
upon the cross.
