On Monday the students receivedall general information, toured thecampus, took personality inventoriesmet the entire college faculty andstaff and received greetings from
Acting President H. Manning Eef-ferson.
Tuesday the freshmen kept busy
meeting the Personnel Deans and
staffs, taking the English placementtest, and meeting the DivisionalDeans for group conferences. Tues-day night the Student Council un-der the leadership of William Bal-
loon, the president, of Lakelandtalked with the freshmen on “Stu-
dent Life On Our Campus,” after-
which the Council had a reception
for the group in the freshmen wo-
men lounge.

“Big Time Crip”Dies In DetroitHospital
DETROIT (ANP) Stanley
“Big Time Crip” Holmes, one of the
most spectacular of one-legged dan-
cers, died in Rest Haven hospital
here last week, where he had been
under treatment for tuberculosissince last December. Holmes, a great
favorite in Harlem until his health
failed, was frequently seen at thea-
tres throughout the country.
The only known living relative ofHolmes is a brother, with whom“Crip” is said not to have been too
close for many years. Friends of the
dancer in New York are planning
to take part in funeral and burialarrangements for the deceased dan-
cer should his brother not claim the
body.
11 Nigerians Begin
Studies At Lincoln U.LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.
(ANP) Eleven students from Ni-geria, British West Africa, arrivedhere Sunday to begin their studiesfor the A.B. degree under sponsor-
ship of the African Academy of Arts
and reaserch and the Lincoln Uni-
versity Scholarship committee. The
students, all educated in Nigeria's
colonial schools, plan to return to
Africa upon completion of their
courses here.

SAN MIGUEL ALLENDALE,
Mexico (ANP) The departure
of American students from the SanMiguel Art school last week left na-
tive Mexican citizens with no re-
grets.
Natives, who had become disguest-
ed with the Whites’ disorderly con-duct which included drunkeness,
brawls, and a murder in the end. Be-
cause of their dislike of the Ameri-cans, Mexicans had dubbed them
“Gringoes.”
To get rid of the U. S. students,
the Veterans administration with-drew its support. One veteran is still
there on charges of killing anotherex-GI over a girl.
Interracial SchoolMakes Good In D. C.
WASHINGTON (ANP) One
of Washington’s most successful in-
terracial experiments is the Carver
Vocational Institute, now in its sec-
ond year. It opened in July, 1948, to
teach Negroes and Whites shoe re-
pairing, brick masonry, auto me-
chanics, and body and fender work.
Os 550 students now attending the
educational center, about 30 are
White who come mainly from the
South.Directors of the school are Baisal
B. Oliver, Negro, and William Solo-
mon, White.
Negro BirthrateHigher Than Whites
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (ANP)
For the first time in the state’s his-
tory the birth rate for Negroes is
higher than the birth rate for
Whites, it was reported by the state
department of public health last
W©elc.Birth rate for Negroes increased
from 25.6 per 1000 population in 1947
to 27.2 per 1,000 in 1948 while the
White rate decreased from 28.6 to
26.3 per 1,000 population.
