The University of Chicago was presented by its alumni Joe and Rika Mansueto, a brand new library; but this Library is unlike any that have come before it.
A sunlit dome of glass and steel is the simplest way to describe this engineering marvel, but simple it most definitely is not.
The depository of books, housing 3.5 million volumes extends 50 feet underground, imagine an iceberg, where all we see on the surface of the water is the tip. The book storage and retrieval is completely automatic and the temperature and climate inside are optimized for the long time preservation of its contents.
The architect Helmut Jahn has been lauded for his minimal architectural designs, and here too can these ideals be seen. The use of the underground storage facility allows for a minimal structure above ground which seamlessly integrates with the different styles of the surrounding buildings.
This is what we were drawn to about this library and led us on to design the lighting. We embraced the idea of the iceberg to further the development of our plans and provide us with an over all concept.
Introduction
4 5
“The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.” Sigmund Freud
We started this project with the plans and drawings, trying to make sense of the size and scale of this venture; but what was most evident to us was the ground breaking ideas it presented. The shape of the building appeared to us to represent an Iceberg, where all we could see on the surface was just its tip, the wealth of information hidden below the surface.
We were inspired by the way light passes through ice depending on the density of the frozen water, and how the Mansueto library uses three different types of glazing to achieve this same idea with sunlight. The dome uses clear glass upto a height of 4m after which a 40% transmitting screen printed frit is used to diffuse the sunlight; and finally on the top at a height of 8.5m a 70% transmitting frit diffuses the strong light coming in from the zenith. We decided on the use of neutral white colored light to create an atmosphere of learning within the dome - not too cosy, and not too cold.
In the areas divided with partition walls, we wanted to play with the inside-outside nature of these spaces within spaces. Here we decided on the idea of perpetual skylights, lit during the day by natural daylight and during the night by the artificial general lighting.
This is what we decided on to then further our development of the lighting plan. We subdivided the room into six spaces, depending on the activity and required lighting level:
The Grand Reading Room, The Reception Counter,The Special Collections Room,The Offices,The Multifunction Room,The Special Handling Room, The Connection Bridge.
Concept
6 7
The main task with the grand reading room is to provide an even illuminance on all working surfaces. The required average illuminance for a working surface is between 300 and 500 lux, which is tricky in a room where the ceiling height changes so drastically.
To achieve this level of lighting a mixture of direct and direct diffused components have been used. Neutral white, 4000K fluorescent tubes with prismatic reflectors are attached to the metal structure beginning where the 40% printed frit starts and running all along the dome. These appear as lines of light turning the usually shadowing dark metal into a source of light. In addition to these, surface mounted wide angle metal halides with a colour temperature of 3000K are attached in a grid, to improve the quality of the light within the space. The fluorescent tubes are dimable and can be adjusted for higher or lower levels of illuminance depending on the time of day or weather.
Task lighting on the desks adds to the light level and allows for customizable brightnesses for different activities. A luminaire by Se’lux has been utilized here that uses warm white LEDs with a beam angle of 40˚. These task lights have a customized base where four luminaries are mounted in the middle and adjusted personally by the users.

The first thing one sees upon entering the Mansueto library is the reception desk.
It is here that face to face meetings and interactions take place. This is an area where new people come to find out new information, collect books and make other enquiries; so it has been lit with consideration to make it clearly visible with good colour rendering.
The counter itself is lit with LEDs built into the structure of the desk. The LEDs are arranged in a strip along the furrow providing a line of diffused light and serving as a marker.
Suspended chrome plated luminaries hang in a half circle following the shape of the reception counter. Wide flood MR16 halogen lamps provide good colour rendering and are fitted with honeycomb louvres to prevent glare. These lamps provide sufficient illumination of the desk for all transactions. The chrome finish has been chosen to make the lamps appear to disappear in their surroundings.

The ASRS lift room is a room where the books are received from the underground storage facility. Here they are scanned and sorted before they are given out to the students. For the lighting of this room, we chose to use the idea of a perpetual skylight. The roof of the room is closed and in the two spaces directly above the lifts, skylights have been placed.
These skylights use a diffusing PVC material known as Barrisol which transmits 90% of the light in a diffused distribution.
The Barrisol surface is lit in the day time with sunlight and in the night with the general artificial light on the dome giving the area a diffused glow. To add to the illumination in the room recessed profiles with fluorescent tubes and wide flood LED spotlights have been used.
The special collections room has been lit in a similar way, here five Barrisol skylights have been used with the same recessed profiles in-between each skylight. As this is a long room almost appearing as a corridor, the wall at the end of the room has been washed evenly to make the space look longer.

Within the structure of the dome, partition walls have been built creating spaces for offices and other areas for the sensitive handling and restoration of rare books. There are four offices located in a line in the area attached to the special collections room. They have a glass front and are walled on three sides. The roof has been divided into 3 parts; the first and third parts are left open and the space in the middle is again covered with Barrisol. We have chosen to partially cover the roof because lower ceilings allow for more focused work. We have also chosen to have the back wall lit evenly with a wall washer. This roof set up allows people to lean back and look up into the dome above them, but also gives them the feeling of being in a closed space.
In addition to the general lighting, task lighting has also been provided.

As an exception to the skylight principle, the multifunctional room has an opaque ceiling to guarantee undisturbed use for projections and presentations.
In this room we make use of two different lighting components; To provide vertical illuminance, ceiling recessed flourescent luminaires with a wide beam angle have been seemly integrated redrawing the shape of the room.
Additional recessed halogen spotlights are framed by the diffuse component offering the necessary light to work on different tasks.

Similar to the multifunctional room, ceiling recessed fluorescent luminaires will provide general illuminance in the solvent area.
Both the special handling room as well as the photo room feature a suspended luminaire with up- and downlight lighting distribution.
The diffuse component will increase the volume of the small space and will give a pleasant atmosphere.

The glass bridge connects the Mansueto Library and the Regenstein.
Integrating floor recessed linear tubes covered with a diffusing glass following the shape of the building will provide sufficient light for night time use. During the day those luminaries will stay off due to adequate daylighting.
The bridge is made of glass causing the diffuse lines to generate multiple reflections and underline the direction of movement. To demonstrate the transparent character of the connection bridge we keep the bridge itself in a lower brightness level then the surrounding spaces.
Man gravitates towards the light and high brightness levels, so the bridge acts as a transition space between the bright dome and the bright knuckle at its source in the Regenstein.
