Dear Fellowship of the Redeemed,
In the midst of a season that is often cloudy and cold, the season of the Epiphany of
our Lord breaks into our hearts like rays of sunshine. At a time of year when darkness comes
so early in the evening, the season of Epiphany proclaims light and joy! Epiphany starts on
January 6 and continues to the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.
What better way to sense the proclamation of light and joy than through the Epiphany
hymn, “O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright!” (LBW #76), text and music by Philipp Nico-
lai:
“Oh, let the harps break forth in sound!
Our joy be all with music crowned,
Our voices gaily blending!
For Christ goes with us all the way –
Today, tomorrow, ev’ry day!
His love is never ending!
Sing out! Ring out!
Jubilation! Exultation!
Tell the story!
Great is he, the King of Glory”(vs. 6)
In the midst of a season with minimum light and maximum darkness, this hymn brings
us to the realization that with Christ in our hearts and by our side, there is no darkness that
can overcome us! Pastor Nicolai served the Church in the later 16th and early 17th centuries
when plagues and rampant illness were killing many of his congregation and town. He pre-
sided at hundreds of funerals and burials. But it was in the midst of this time that he was in-
spired to write both the text and tune for “O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright!” Just look
at the number of exclamation points in that one verse!! Ten times he’s exclaiming the love of
God that we are coming to know in Christ Jesus!
As we move from the celebration of the birth of our Savior, may we come to sense and
know the deep and abiding joy that is ours in the Epiphany of our Lord. May Epiphany’s ex-
uberance be yours!
GOD’S PEACE!

Dear Redeemer Members,
Thank you so much for your many kindnesses
shown to me during my illness and hospitali-
zation. Thank you for your many prayers,
cards, and telephone calls. To those of you
who have and still are, providing transporta-
tion to Columbia, Charleston, and Charlotte , I
am truly grateful. Without your help I could
not have gone to my many appointments and
treatments. Also delicious food has been pro-
vided by many and I’m grateful to you. The
spirit of Christian faith and good will have
been shown to me by your many acts of love.
Redeemer will always have a special place in
my heart.
Jerry Whitesides.
Gloria,
Than you! Thank you! Thank you! The prayer
shawl is beautiful and I can’t tell you how
much I appreciate your ladies for thinking of
me. What a wonderful ministry. I’m so thank-
ful it is getting cold again so I can begin using
it again. I feel the love each time it wraps
around my shoulders.
Love,
Peach Fralick
Dear Pastor Webber and members of the
Lutheran Church of the Redeemer,
I am writing to thank you for selecting me as
the recipient of the Lutheran Church of the
Redeemer scholarship fund. I am finishing up
my Junior year as a biology major. I plan to

By receiving this scholarship, you have light-
ened my financial burden and thanks to you, I
am one step closer to my goal. I hope one day
I will be able to help students achieve their
goals just as you have helped me.
Sincerely,
Noel Franklin

19, 2015, (Detroit, Michigan)

son.

What happens during the ELCA Youth Gathering?
The Youth Gathering is a five-day event that begins on a Wednesday evening and ends
with a service of communion the following Sunday morning. The opening night sets the
stage for the days ahead in which young people may have an encounter with Jesus that
energizes their faith and helps them further discover their call to live and serve in the
world — locally and globally.
On the days between Wednesday and Sunday, young people rotate through a variety of
service learning experiences in the surrounding community. They explore and strength-
en their faith by studying God’s word, serving their neighbor, sharing bread and wine in
worship, participating in lively faith discussions and broadening their experience of
God’s world and diverse communities through travel. For many young people, traveling
to the ELCA Youth Gathering is the first time they have been out of their county or
state.
When the question “Why work so hard to gather so many young people in one place?”
pops up, the response is really quite simple. We were meant to be together, and we are a
church that believes God is calling us into the world — together.
So every now and then, we gather young people and adults together to share their
unique stories and to experience the larger story that makes up the ELCA; we gather to
be inspired, encouraged, strengthened, connected and sent out to do God’s work in the
world — together!
What about safety in Detroit?
.A two-page letter, produced by the Director of the ELCA Youth
Gathering, is available to read concerning safety in Detroit . Contact Susan Jackson for a complete copy of this letter.
An exceprt reads:
“Next to communicating the gospel and practicing our faith through ser-
vice and learning, the number one priority of the ELCA Youth Gathering is
keeping young people and adults safe while in Detroit. To that end, the
Gathering’s Safety and Security Planning team, one of fourteen planning
teams, works with Churchwide legal and risk management staff, as well as law enforcement professionals
from the host community to draft a risk management plan.
That plan takes into account the risk management plans of the different facilities occupied by ELCA youth
and adults, including, but not limited to, the Cobo Center (convention center), Ford Field, hotels
and service sites. Youth Gathering volunteers and staff are trained in accordance with the plan.
We also ensure that the adult leaders who accompany congregational groups are familiar with the
basic safety plans by mandating training as part of the registration process. Outside of the
Gathering community, the Safety and Security team conducts briefings with local law
enforcement regularly during the planning cycle and throughout the Gathering. All law
enforcement and public safety systems are on alert and aware of our presence. They know where
our people are at all times.
