ABOUT THE MAD FOUNDATION
02
The MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOUNDATION (MAD) is a non-profit corporation. Founded in 2003 by Francois Pienaar, the respected former captain of the South African Springbok rugby team which won the 1995 Rugby World Cup, along with likeminded friends from the worlds of international sport and top level corporate business who all shared a passion to give something back that would make a difference to our vibrant country with so much opportunity – South Africa.
VISIONMAD seeks to provide exceptional holistic educational and related opportunities to academically talented youngsters from financially less fortunate circumstances in order to maximise their personal development and mentor them into becoming effective role models – the leaders of tomorrow in South African society.
Youthful talent needs to be nurtured and MAD creates platforms for this to take place. Our dream is the manifestation of a ‘tipping point’- a small but indispensable component of MAD alumni and MAD achievers who help create positive change.

PHILOSOPHY
At MAD we believe that in order to create the leaders of tomorrow, we need to ‘make a difference’ in their young lives today.
MAD seeks to complement the groundwork of other charity organizations who respond to the issues of poverty, AIDS and health by providing quality education to carefully selected candidates, effectively ‘raising the ceiling’ through the personal development of talented individuals.
To achieve our vision we focus on:
• Carefully selecting learners and implementing holistic education programmes • Continuously evaluating and monitoring the progress of our education programmes• Creatively networking with influential companies, institutions and individuals• Creating dynamic fundraising initiatives both locally and abroad
Through this process we aim to:
• Develop the leaders of tomorrow• Maintain a 10%-15% administration cost to income ratio• Consistently apply excellent Corporate Governance • Build a legacy that we can be proud of
0206
EDUCATION PROGRAMME OVERVIEWAt MAD we embrace the ideology of “holistic learner educational development” and as such have incorporated academic and environmental ‘green’ education programmes, as well as personalised leadership and life-skills mentoring into our MAD initiatives. To date the MAD Education Programme has supported in excess of 2000 learners in South Africa.
The MAD Education Programme is categorised into two unique programmes:
• The Individual Education Programme• The Broad-Based Education Programme
0208
INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMEOVERVIEW: • This programme provides merit and need-based individual scholarships or bursaries to academically- talented youngsters who attend local and international schools and ultimately tertiary institutions.• It also provides a holistic approach and support by providing schooling, accommodation, life skills, non- academic activities and academic support including career counselling, remedial support, study-skills training and leadership development.• Learners receive personal one-on-one mentorship comprising flexible personalised support according to each individual’s unique set of needs.
IDEAL CANDIDATES:• Talented youngsters with high academic potential between 11 and 13 years of age, i.e. Gr 7 learners.• Financially disadvantaged learners who are unable to realise their academic aspirations.
SOURCING PROCESS:Learners are sourced through a network of relationships developed with schools, charities, mentors and the public in general. Individual Education Programmes are currently offered nationally in the Western Cape, Kwazulu Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
ASSESSMENT PROCESS:• Applicants undergo a formal assessment in the form of a written paper application• An in-depth analysis of an applicant’s academic achievements• An assessment of the financial status of the applicant’s parents/guardians• Psychometric testing overseen by an educational psychologist• A one-on-one interview with candidates and their parents/guardians

DEVELOPING TOMORROW’S LEADER
0210
BROAD-BASED EDUCATION PROGRAMMEOVERVIEW:The broad-based programme consists of two projects:
• Literacy Programme This programme focuses on the improvement of literacy in disadvantaged communities by teaching learners to read and write.
• Environmental ‘Green’ Education Programme This programme focuses on inspiring learners to appreciate nature by improving awareness of nature conservation. The programme also aims to develop and maintain eco villages at selected schools. Each village consists of key-hole gardens, nurseries for growing seedlings and outdoor classrooms. Key hole garden vegetables are used as a supplement to the daily feeding schemes, as well as generating income through the sale thereof. Some schools choose to offer vegetables to orphans and needy people in the community.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS
The MAD Foundation relies on funding generated through local and international fundraising events in partnership with various reputable organisations. These fundraisers have historically been generously supported by celebrity sports personalities, the business community and individual friends and loyal supporters of MAD from around the globe.
An official Annuity Income and a Sponsorship Programme is key to building the financial resources necessary to provide for the children who are selected for our MAD Education Programmes.
MAD fundraising events include:
• MAD Golf Days: South Africa: Western Cape/Kwazulu Natal/Gauteng International: United Kingdom/USA
• MAD Cycling Events: Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge
• Individual fundraising initiatives or by individual participation in various fundraising events.
MAD is supported through the generosity of the general public as well as the private sector. ‘Protection of Sponsors’ is embodied in a financial Sponsorship Agreement, which governs the agreement signed between MAD and the relevant Sponsor.

LEARNER TESTIMONIALS
“The MAD Foundation has really helped me to get a positive outlook on life. I used to give up easily and I never tried my best at anything. Thanks to you guys I now know that everything I do has to be my best effort. Now I persevere and never give up. You have helped me a great deal.”
DAVID HATHERALLB.Com Actuary Student, Stellenbosch University, SA
“The battle is lost and won in one’s mind and heart and by deciding to take this walk you have won half the battle – all you have to do now is to claim your victory at the top of the mountain. When your legs feel weak, imagine all OUR smiles wishing you on and you will gain strength. Keep walking and may God grant you all the strength you need. Thank you for this!”
MUZI MTHOMBENIB.Com Marketing Student, Wits University, SA
“It is a mathematical fact that the casting of this pebble from my hand alters the centre of gravity of the universe.”-Thomas Carlyle.“Francois jy gooi baie meer as net ’n klippie. Ons ervaar die verskil wat jy maak. Dankie.”“Francois you cast more than just a pebble. We experience the difference that you make. Thank you.”
SPENCER HORNEEngineering Student, Harvard, USA
“In the middle of 2004 I was introduced to the MAD programme and after several interviews I made the cut! Then it was off to school, with MAD fully supporting me, not just financially but also spiritually. High school is where I started using all the opportunities I was given. I joined a charity chess group, started a chess club at school, swimming, dancing and singing in the choir. I live for the moment! I grab every opportunity with both hands! I always have my family and friends to support me and then there is also my extended family at MAD. In my years with MAD they have helped me to be the person that I am today.”
