When Gail Hamilton was hired to leadthe Zephyrhills Community RedevelopmentAgency about a year ago, she noticed an un-settling trend while patrolling the older, traditional city neighborhoods.
Scattered across several homeowners’lawns were old appliances, rolled-up car-pets, debris and fallen trees.
“I think nobody had done anything in along time,” Hamilton said, regarding the con-dition of the historic Zephyrhillsneighborhoods.
“The first thing when you start redevel-oping an area is you look to clean it up,” sheadded.
To do so, Hamilton collaborated withseveral other city departments — CodeEnforcement, Public Works, Police and FireDepartments—to create a so-called “CleanTeam.”
The “Clean Team” organizes neighbor-
hood cleanups every other month, pinpoint-ing a different geographical area within thecity limits for each event.
The program offers an opportunity forcity residents to get rid of unwanted junk, with public works crews and community
volunteers lending a helping hand.“We go in there...and clean up anything
people can get out into their alley or curb-side, because we don’t go onto privateproperty and pick anything up,” said ShaneLeBlanc, Zephyrhills Public Works director.“A lot of people will have roll-off construc-tion dumpsters outside. A lot of people dropstuff off to us.”
“You can get rid of your junk, and youdon’t even have to bring it to the site,”Hamilton said. “We have crews that aregoing up and down the alleyway within thearea that we’re cleaning, and if you can justget it to the alley, we’ll pick it up. So for peo-ple that don’t have a truck or the means toget it to us, we’re trying to help them asmuch as we possibly can, so there’s no ex-cuse that you don’t clean up your property.”
The third neighborhood cleanup, on Feb.27, was labeled as the “most successful” yet, according to Hamilton. The cleanup encom-

Pasco County commissioners have ap-proved a ban aimed at preventingstreet-corner panhandling in the county.
That action came despite pleas fromthose who had been selling newspapers inthe county on Sundays.
By adopting a total ban, the countywould cost workers’ wages and jobs, oppo-nents said.
“I’m begging you, please understand youare affecting so many people,” said ReneeContreras, who oversees workers who sellnewspapers on Sundays in the WesleyChapel area.
Commissioners were unmoved, and onApril 26 unanimously approved the totalban.
The ordinance is similar to ones inHillsborough County and the City of St.Petersburg.
It bans “soliciting or attempts to solicitemployment, business, contributions, dona-tions, or sales or exchanges, of any kindfrom the driver or an occupant of a motorvehicle, or distributing or attempting to dis-tribute any goods or materials to the driveror an occupant” of the motor vehicle.

Dozens of citizens, along with well overa hundred Pasco County law enforcementofficers, joined together at the Historic DadeCity Courthouse to honor fallen officers —both past and present.
Fallen officers, both locally and national-ly, were honored during a 90-minuteceremony at the annual Law EnforcementMemorial Service on April 29.
During the solemn occasion, severalspeakers — including Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera — discussed the importance of lawenforcement, commemorating those thathave fallen, and those who presently servethe community.
Lopez-Cantera highlighted the state’s2015 crime rate dip, saying, “We talk abouthow great it is to live in Florida and we talk
about how many people are moving to ourstate, but don’t think for one second that wedon’t always remember and recognize thatwe would not have these communities, these businesses moving to Florida if we didnot have a 44-year low in our crime rate.
“We do not forget that these men andwoman protect our families, protect ourbusiness and even protect those that levelmeritless criticism against them,” Lopez-
Cantera added. “We say, ‘thank you’ to thosethat have served, currently serve and theirfamilies.”
Dade City Police Chief Ray Velboom toldthe crowd he hopes “some year we couldcome to these services to remember thosethat have only lost their lives in the line ofduty in the past, and we would have no new

• Experience better than normal hearing** in noisy situations – like restaurants!
• New features make sounds come alive – perfect for listening to or playing music!
* An independent clinical study in the US has shown that primax provided a significant improvement in ease of listening in demanding listening environments. A newly developed methodology using objective brain behavior measures
(Electroencephalographic data), showed a significant reduction in listening effort for mild to moderate hearing impaired subjects using primax hearing aids in speech-innoise situations applying advanced features such as Narrow Focus and EchoShield.
** Primax has the complete set of premium features and powered by binax. Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.

On April 15, Sandy and Al Lindke put to-gether a gathering for neighbors of GrandHorizons, and 32 people attended. I couldn’tattend, and heard from Sandy that the weath-er was questionable so she prepared herhouse for everyone. But, it turned out to belovely, so it was held outside. Everyone had alovely time. They had Italian sausage withseveral salads and lots of desserts. Sandy andAl provided the Italian sausage, and everyoneelse brought a dish. This was a nice get-to-gether to say “goodbye” to the manysnowbirds that were leaving.
The following day, 26 more peopleshowed up at JD and Sharon Blair’shome. This was a block party, and we all hadlots of fun. There was much conversation, and one such discussion was reminiscingabout old TV shows. The block party wasput on by Sharon and JD Blair, and also Rox-Anne Lamphere, who arranged the entireouting. There was so much food, as every-one was asked to bring their specialty.
Therefore, we had many dishes. There wereham and roast beef sandwiches, cherrysalad, Watergate salad, desserts includingsugar cookies, lemon cream cheese brown-ies, and many different kinds of soda. Also onthe menu, we had lumpia, which is a popu-lar Filipino dish. It was so very tasty anddifferent. We left this block party knowingthat we had a great time.
On April 19, several women met at thecommunity center for a lively game ofBunco. This is a dice game and loads offun. It was started by JoAnn Fisher a shorttime ago, and it proves to be a success. Sincepeople are still learning the game, only sevenwomen showed up, but a dummy was put inthe eighth chair (as the game is played ingroups of four). Not only did we have a goodtime, but the dummy added to the attrac-tion. All types of remarks were made to thisdummy (called several different names) dur-ing the two hours that we were there. Inclosing, this is a cute game, plus it is easilylearned. The game will continue on, but I’llsatisfy myself by looking forward to it whenwe return from the North.

The pastors of Our Lady of the RosaryCatholic Church in Land O’ Lakes and SaintPeter the Apostle Church in Trinity have re-ceived honors bestowed by Pope Francis.
The Rev. Ron Aubin and the Rev. DennisHughes now have an additional title, besidespastor and father — they now also bear thetitle of monsignor, a designation that is be-stowed on those who have been named aChaplain of His Holiness.
The Most Rev. Robert Lynch, Bishop ofthe Diocese of St. Petersburg, nominated themen for the honor, which was officially con-ferred during a special ceremony on April17 at the diocese’s Bethany Center in Lutz.
The evening also included the award ofthe Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal to 14 re-cipients. One person also received theBenemerenti Medal.
To be nominated to be designated as amonsignor, one must be at least 65 yearsold, Aubin said.
It’s typically a recognition for effortsmade over a lifetime of ministry, said Aubin, who said he grew up in Catholic family, at-tending Catholic schools and felt calledearly on to be a priest.
He was surprised when he got the callfrom the bishop, informing him he wasbeing nominated for the honor.
“It’s nice to be recognized,” Aubin said, adding that he thinks the older parishionersat Our Lady of the Rosary were more excit-ed than he was by the honor.
While he is grateful to Bishop Lynch andPope Francis for the designation, he said, “Asfar as I’m concerned, there’s no better title
than Father.”Aubin also noted: “when the kids started
calling me Papa Ron, that was the best hon-orific.”
“I’m just a pastor. That’s all I am. It’s all Iwanted to be,” Aubin said.
The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal, con-sidered the highest honor which the churchawards to its lay and religious members, isgranted by the Pope following the nomina-tion of a bishop, who provides a casestatement regarding the nominee’s worthi-ness for the designation.
Including those designated during theceremony, only 62 men and women in thediocese of St. Petersburg have received thisdistinction in the past 20 years.
Local recipients of Pro Ecclesia etPontifice Medal were: Gerald Phillip Giglia,of St. Timothy Church in Lutz and, ArthurFrancis Kirk, former president of Saint LeoUniversity, of St. Leo Abbey/St. Rita CatholicChurch, Dade City.

Mother’s Day is coming up. Thatprobably means flowers and acard for your mom, your spouse
or someone you know who is a mom.And that sounds like a nice way to recog-
nize them: Flowers and a card. Not verycreative, of course. Maybe a little boringwhen you think about it. But nice, I guess.
The question is, do you want to be bor-ing, or do you want mom to know she’sspecial? Does she really want another yearof flowers to throw away and a card to putin a shoebox? Or does she want to spendsome quality time with you and the family?
Maybe this is the year to surprise momwith something she doesn’t expect, like anevening listening to live, classical musicfrom an acclaimed orchestra. How oftendoes she get to do that?
On Mother’s Day, May 8, the whole fami-ly can do something together when theFlorida Orchestra performs a free concert atCurtis Hixon Park, 600 N. Ashley Drive, inTampa. It’s a nearly two-hour show withmusic you’ve definitely heard before, includ-ing some classic favorites. As in, legitimateclassics.
Oh, and did I mention it’s free? I did? Ok,just checking.
The Florida Orchestra has put together aMother’s Day performance for the past fewyears, and the concert is very popular.Thousands of people bring lawn chairs, food, drinks, blankets and even leashed pets(the park is dog-friendly) to hear them per-form.
And it’s not just a few parts of the or-chestra. It’s the whole thing. Around 60musicians will perform compositions like
Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture andOffenbach’s Can-Can.
Never heard those, you say? Yes, youhave. You might not know them by name, but when you hear it you’ll recognize it.There’s also going to be music from “StarWars: The Force Awakens” and a tribute toThe Beatles. I’m sure you’ve heard of them.Throw in the Olympic fanfare and finish itall off with some fireworks, and you have anevening of fun, unique entertainment.
And how will mom feel about taking herto a free event? I think she’ll be proud toknow that you listened to her about savingmoney and being responsible with your fi-nances. And she’ll be honored that you’respending time with her to do somethingunique and fun. No offense to flower shopsand candy makers, but this is a memory thatwill last a lot longer.
The performance starts at 7:30 p.m., butyou’ll want to get there early to get a goodspot. Feel free to invite other mothers, too.Maybe you know a mom whose childrendon’t live locally, or aren’t with them any-more. They deserve to be recognized, too. Sowhether it’s a friend, neighbor or familymember, invite them to come with you andenjoy some entertaining live music from aspecial group of performers.
This isn’t some garage band playing at aneighborhood party.
The Florida Orchestra has been aroundfor decades, performed with WhitneyHouston when she sang “The Star-Spangled

names to add to the memorials here oracross the country.”
The 35-year veteran of law enforcementpointed out nationwide increases in line-of-duty deaths by gunfire, with 17 incidentsthus far in 2016.
“We wonder why this is going on and de-spite all the many changes we’ve made overthe years, we still see the violence and thedeath,” Velboom said, noting there’s been anational upheaval in policing since theshooting death of Michael Brown inFerguson, Missouri, in 2014.
Brown, an unarmed black teenager, waskilled by Darren Wilson, a white police offi-cer. The shooting prompted protests forweeks in the city, a suburb of St. Louis.
“While it’s been proven the officer actedappropriately, the event cast a shadow overthe department, its practices and cultures,”Velboom said, adding “and law enforcementall around the country is being painted withthat same broad brush.”
Velboom acknowledged the importanceof law enforcement officers to earn the trustand respect of the citizens they serve to pre-vent issues in the future.
“We must continue to work on buildingpositive relationships with our communityand be as transparent as we can,” he ex-plained. “We must work on this every day, with every action.”
Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco dis-cussed the cultural significance of the “thinblue line,” a symbol of solidarity for policeofficers and their families.
“We sometimes hear a few people talkabout the thin blue line in a negative man-ner — where they think the blue linerepresents a policy where law enforcementofficers have a protocol...to protect crimi-nals who wear a badge,” Nocco said.
But Nocco said, “We actually hold thegreatest responsibility to hold up the integri-ty of the badge, especially to those whogave the ultimate sacrifice while wearing it,”Nocco said.
Despite recent negativity and pessimismtoward law enforcement nationwide, Nocco,Pasco’s sheriff since 2011, said, “our worldconsists of men and woman, and familieswho understand there is good and evil inthis world and evil must be defeated, no mat-
ter how ugly that may look.”The sheriff went on to say, “Most impor-
tantly, our world is made up with trueheroes, who are filled with so much braveryand love that they’re willing to give up theirearthly body to protect another humanbeing.
“We honor their sacrifices — not just onone day, but every day,” Nocco said.
with 13 fatalities. The highest volume of fatalcrashes happened on Saturday and Sunday, and occurred more often in daylight thanevening.
Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco alsosaid that people were taking advantage ofthe Sunday exception to the ordinance.
“They are switching over from sellingnewspapers to panhandling,” he said. “By af-ternoon, they switch out signs. It goes backto — there is a public safety issue.”
Pasco County Commissioner Mike Wellsbrought up the issue in March after hearingabout a veteran who was killed while sellingnewspapers along U.S. 19.
Commissioners then directed staff mem-bers to draft the new ordinance.
“It’s an unsafe practice for all involved,”Wells said, adding that he believes Pascodoes everything possible to help residentsin need.
While Pasco County Commissioner Jack
Mariano sympathized with those sellingnewspapers, he said, “It’s just not workingout. It’s unfortunate we have to take thisstrong step.”
Hugh Townsend, of the Hunter’s Ridgehomeowners’ association, said panhandling“is of grave concern.”
Residents have dealt with litter, brokenlights around the community’s monumentsign and destruction to landscaping.
“I’d rather see them set up in a parkinglot,” Townsend said.
From his wheelchair, Clifton Levigne toldcommissioners that he and others need themoney they earn from selling Sunday news-papers.
“We have to count on selling newspa-pers, or else we can’t have enough to getthrough the week,” he said. “We’re not pan-handlers.”
Contreras said the ordinance would hurtpeople trying to work for a living, but proba-bly won’t stop panhandling.
“They (panhandlers) just cost us all ourjobs,” she said.
passed the area between North Avenue andSixth Avenue, covering neighborhoods allthe way east to 20th Street.
Approximately 160 cubic yards of mixeddebris, 24 televisions, 44 tires and one wash-ing machine were hauled away.
Additionally, 39 residents dropped off theirjunk to the construction dumpsters at variousstaging areas set up by the “Clean Team.”
When cruising around town, Hamilton no-tices a sizable difference when she seesneighborhoods that have participated in thecleanup program.
“I think we’re beginning to turn a cornerwith the neighborhoods understanding whatwe’re trying to do, and appreciate the abilityto bring their trash,” the redevelopmentagency director said.
“We’re trying to attack it from each angle
so nobody can say, ‘Well, it was too hard toclean up my yard.’”
The cleanups also serve as a warning forresidents that may be in violation of the city’scode enforcement. Instead of immediatelybeing issued a citation, residents have the op-portunity to get rid of the trash in their yardwithout being fined, thereby being offered anamnesty of sorts.
Hamilton noted city officials are being asaccommodating as possible with the pro-gram, saying, “We tell people, ‘this is youropportunity...to clean up your infractions orthe problems you have on your property, butif you don’t, you will be cited for it.’ We’re stillworking on that, and getting through theneighborhoods and making people believe,‘Yes, there will be consequences if you don’tclean up.’
“It’s the ‘carrot and the stick’ approach,’Hamilton added. “The city will use the ‘stick’from code enforcement to say, ‘OK, if you
don’t clean it up, we’ll fineyou.’”
Residents who receivea citation have 30 days toclean up their property.
The fourth neighbor-hood cleanup is set forMay 21 from 8 a.m. tonoon.
It will span from GallBoulevard to 16th Street, generally encompassingthe area between FifthAvenue and South Avenue.
While the program wasinitially going to focus onthe 520-acre CRA district, officials plan to eventuallymake their way throughthe entire city.
“We’re going to expandout,” LeBlanc said. “We’vegot other areas in the citythat need attention as well.
“It’s a great service topeople that can’t get rid ofthings,” LeBlanc said.

LAND O’ LAKES HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: BRIAN WACHTEL (6TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 3-7
Last season was rough for the Gators, whofailed to win a home game at “The Swamp,”and were shutout by their primary rival inSunlake High. Playing five consecutive roadgames didn’t help the cause, either. To relivetheir magical 8-2 season back in 2013, theGators must find some consistent play at thequarterback position, whether that is fromrising senior Spencer Childress or rising jun-ior Jude May. Though the team loses their toptwo rushers from last season in RashawnKindell (526 yards rushing, 5.7 yards percarry) and Tommy Farmer (417 yards, 7 TDs),the Gators may have a breakout candidate intailback Quintin Smith, who’ll be a senior. Ondefense, the Gators return standout safetyJustin Kren, a capable tackler (51 solo tack-les) and ballhawk (five interceptions).
PASCO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: TOM MCHUGH (9TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 4-6
A difficult schedule and some tough breakssteered the Pirates into a losing 2015 season.Despite starting the year 3-0, Pasco High raninto some tough competition in the middle ofthe season, losing four straight games to NorthMarion, Jesuit, Mitchell and Sunlake highschools. A heartbreaking 44-43 overtime loss toSpringstead High added fuel to the fire. Whilethe win-loss total doesn’t show it, the Pirateswere loaded with talent, including cornerbackJayvauhn Myers (Auburn signee), offensivelineman Jamal Mention (Coffeyville (Kansas)Community College signee) and tight endNick Bryant (Middle Tennessee signee). CoachMcHugh must find a way to replace those pro-ductive players, and find a reliable quarterbackafter Michael Penix Jr. transferred to Tampa BayTech.
SUNLAKE HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: BILL BROWNING (9TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 8-3
Another year, another terrific record. That’s been the narrative for the Seahawksover the past six seasons under the leader-ship of head coach Bill Browning. Since2010, the team has a combined record of53-13. Though the team returns several play-ers at the skill positions, one of the bigquestions leading into the season is how theteam will fare on the offensive line, with thedepartures of Bryce Cooley (Angelo Statesignee), Joe Russum (Black Hills Statesignee) and Leo Baez (Bluefield College). Ifthe Seahawks can create cohesion and pro-vide enough protection in the trenches forstandout pro-style quarterback Justin Hall
(1,729 yards, 17 TDs, 3 INTs), they should bein store for another winning season.
WESLEY CHAPEL HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: ANTHONY EGAN (1ST YEAR)2015 RECORD: 2-8
The Wildcats have suffered four straightlosing seasons, and now it’s up to first-yearhead coach Anthony Egan — a former RiverRidge High assistant — to turn the programaround. Luckily for Egan, the cupboard isn’tbare. Signal-caller Jacob Thomas (44 percentcompletion, 1,825 yards, 17 TDs, 13 INTs)returns as well as pass-catchers Ben Goins(31 receptions, 403 yards) and DevinSingletary (23 receptions, 240 yards). On de-fense, the Wildcats return their top threetacklers in Marcus Gillott, Ellrie Allen andChristian Austin. To improve their record, the Wildcats must find a way to develop aconsistent rushing attack (rushers averagedjust 2.6 yards per carry) and they must winclose games (the team lost three games byseven points or fewer in 2015.)
WIREGRASS RANCHHIGH SCHOOLCOACH: MARK KANTOR (2ND YEAR)2015 RECORD: 2-8
Coach Mark Kantor embarks on year twoof what is perhaps a long-term rebuildingjob. Prior to Kantor’s hiring in 2015, theBulls had three coaches in four years, com-bining for an 8-32 record during that span.To improve in 2016, the Bulls must find away to stay healthy (19 season-ending in-juries were suffered in 2015) andsignificantly improve on offense. The teamaveraged just 10.6 points per game in 2015,and was shutout in half of their games. If theBulls can’t muster up better productionfrom the quarterback position, it’ll be toughto secure a winning record.
ZEPHYRHILLS HIGH SCHOOL:COACH: NICK CARROLL (1ST YEAR)2015 RECORD: 8-3
The Bulldogs notched their fourthstraight winning season in 2015, but they’llenter the 2016 season with a new headcoach in Nick Carroll, a former SunlakeHigh assistant. Carroll will try to duplicatethe success of former coach ReggieRoberts, but will have a challenge on hishands. Running back Antwione Sims, theteam’s leading offensive playmaker, tore hisACL (anterior cruciate ligament) over amonth ago, and will likely miss severalgames in 2016. Additionally, Carroll mustfind a way to get Bulldogs players to gel, andlearn the style of offense and defense he’simplementing. Carroll expects several in-coming freshmen and sophomores to makean impact in his first season.
ZEPHYRHILLSCHRISTIAN ACADEMY:COACH: MIKE SMITH (2ND YEAR, 11-MAN)2015 RECORD: 4-4
The Warriors had a respectable 2015 sea-son, if you consider it was their first seasonplaying 11-man football after they dominatedthe 6-man ranks for several years. However, theteam may be in for a setback in 2016, as they’llbe without their top offensive player, wide re-ceiver Issac Johnson (62 receptions, 1,013yards), and top defensive player, defensive line-man J’ Won Pickett. Both Johnson (IowaWestern Community College) and Pickett(Minnesota State Community College) areplaying football at junior colleges next season. The Warriors will also have to develop a newquarterback with the impending graduation ofMatthew Iovine, an accurate passer (67 per-cent completion, 1,475 yards). Being withoutlast year’s quarterback and top receiver mayopen the door to additional carries for return-ing running backs such as John Emmanual,Dwight Thomas and Mykh’ael Chavis.
CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOLCOACH: LANE MCLAUGHLIN (10TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 7-4
Carrollwood Day School prep fansshould be excited about the potential for anentertaining season, and not just because theprivate school’s football team will be playingat a brand-new athletic complex in 2016. Amajority of Carrollwood’s young playmakerson offense return, including incumbentquarterback Raymond Woodie Jr., leadingrusher Yahsin Wooten (740 yards, 8 TDs) andleading receiver Markeis Colvin (20 recep-tions, 501 yards, 4 TDs.) The Patriots alsoreturn their top two tacklers from last sea-son in linebackers Ryan Verscharen andStephen Walters, who will be seniors.Replacing the production of two sack artistsin Zac Watson-Parcells and Corey Shamleywill be key to take a step forward in 2016.
FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: FLOYD GRAHAM (1ST YEAR)2015 RECORD: 3-7
It’s likely a rebuilding year for newFreedom coach Floyd Graham, who was of-
ficially hired on April 1. The good news forthose that closely follow Freedom’s pro-gram is it’s something Graham should beable to handle, considering he created foot-ball programs from scratch at bothNewsome and Steinbrenner high schools. However, Graham will have some uphill bat-tles to climb in year one. Being hired in Aprildoesn’t give him much time to implementhis coaching philosophy, and develop a rap-port with both players and assistantcoaches. Also, the team is losing a plethoraof seniors from 2015, including do-it-all play-maker Nasir Core.
GAITHER HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: JASON STOKES (6TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 4-6
In order to improve in 2016, theCowboys must make some strides on the of-fensive side of the ball. The team scorednine points or fewer in six out of their 10games. Luckily for Coach Stokes, bellcowrunning back Alex Rodriguez returns.Getting quarterback Gavin Denboer to cutdown on his interceptions (10) is a must. The Cowboys defense should be able tohold its own, with the return of linebackerDecalon Brooks, last year’s leading tackler(114). The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Brooks, theson of Tampa Bay Buccaneers legendDerrick Brooks, is widely viewed as one ofthe top players in all of Tampa. The consen-sus three-star recruit already has Division Ischolarship offers from Florida InternationalUniversity, Florida State University,University of Illinois and University of SouthFlorida.
STEINBRENNER HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: ANDRES PEREZ-REINALDO (5TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 9-2
The Warriors finally had a breakout sea-son in 2015 under the tutelage of headcoach Andres Perez-Reinaldo. Thanks to apotent offense and an at-times smotheringdefense, Steinbrenner’s only two setbackslast season were against dynasty prep pro-grams in Manatee (Bradenton) High and Dr.Phillips (Orlando) High. On offense, quarter-back Collin Wray (56 percent completion,1,634 yards) returns, as do two of his fa-vorite targets in Brett Bitter (35 receptions,600 yards) and Carson Kaleo (34 recep-tions, 277 yards). Replacing the productionof 1,000-yard rusher Jayquese Dantley issomething the team will need to address.
On defense, Coach Perez-Reinaldo and hisstaff must find some players that can carrythe load, since the Warriors lose three lead-ing tacklers in Tyler Mirabella, Patrick Lukertand Zack Deitz.
WHARTON HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: DAVID MITCHELL (12TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 8-2
The Wildcats enjoyed a successful 2015campaign, with sizable victories over thelikes of King High, Gaither High, WiregrassRanch and Leto High. However, it won’t beeasy to replicate the scoring outputs (atleast 30 points in seven games) from 2015.Coach Mitchell will have to replace quarter-back Bryce Martin, leading rusher MilesWilliams (1,102 yards, 10 TDs) and leadingreceiver Devontres Dukes (18 receptions,360 yards) from last year’s squad. They alsolost defensive stalwarts in linebackerHayden Parks (75 tackles) and defensivelineman Godey Coleus (six sacks). One pos-sible breakout candidate to watch istwo-way player Shannon King, who will bea junior. The powerful 5-foot-10, 210-pounder rushed for nearly 400 yards, adding6.9 yards per carry.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY
FILE PHOTOSThe Land O’ Lakes Gators are looking toavoid a third straight losing season. Amore manageable schedule in 2016should help.
The Sunlake Seahawks are looking tohave their seventh straight winning sea-son. To do so, Coach Bill Browning willhave to replace several starters on theoffensive line.
Wiregrass Ranch coach Mark Kantorenters year two of what is likely a lengthyrebuilding job. The Bulls haven’t had awinning season since 2010.
Steinbrenner football coach AndresPerez-Reinaldo is looking to build off theteam’s 9-2 campaign in 2015.
New Freedom High football coach FloydGraham is likely in for a rebuilding year, taking over a losing team (3-7) that lostseveral contributors.

Spring football practices are underway for highschools across the state. While the first games of the2016 season are still several months away, Florida
high schools are allowed a maximum of 20 practice ses-sions between April 25 to May 31, according to FHSAA(Florida High School Athletic Association) guidelines.

In Gulfport, it seems, there really is some-thing for everyone.
Daniel Hodge found that out when hemoved from San Francisco to Gulfport near-ly a decade ago to live near family.

But, this quaint historical fishing villageon the Boca Ciega Bay is far from hiddenthese days.
With a reviving waterfront district, a his-torical casino ballroom, art galleries, neighborhood bars and gourmet diningspots, Gulfport is being discovered as theplace to enjoy the old, and the new.
Rainbow-colored shops, boutiques andrestaurants along and around BeachBoulevard add texture to subtropical Florida, evoking another historical town to the south.
“I think what most come here for is theKey West lifestyle, before Key West becamecommercial,” said Scott Linde, president ofthe Gulf Port Merchants Association. “It con-veys remembrances of old Florida. It has anartsy feel to it. We have all ages, all lifestyleshere.”
Gulfport’s downtown charms are appar-ent during the community’s First Friday ArtWalks, which are year-round on the FirstFriday and Third Friday of the month, from 6p.m. to 10 p.m.
Beach and Shore boulevards are alivewith activities, as artists, crafters and liveperformers give visitors a chance to browse, shop and be entertained.

In 2004, the gecko partnered with theGulfport Merchants Association to keep theannual party rolling.
On Aug. 5, there will be a Gecko ArtShow; on Aug. 13, the Gecko Pub Crawl; onAug. 27, a ball with the theme “20,000Geckos Under the Sea”; and, on Sept. 3, ablow-out street festival.
But, there is no need to wait for Geckofestivities to make a trip to Gulfport.
On an ordinary day, the town rolls outthe welcome mat.

The history museum is open to the pub-lic, with no admission charge, and featuresan impressive display of historical docu-ments and photographs from the town’shistory and its families, dating to the 1880s.
