Project Objectives

• Test tear-off RAS in wear course• Compare tear-off RAS vs. manufacturers’

RAS vs. virgin only HMA• No RAP in any test mix• Continue analysis of cost savings

potential

Shingles Grinding by Omann

• ½-inch minus• G.L. Roofing Company provided 12 tons of

clean, certified tear-off shingles• Written certification forms used to document

compliance with state and federal rules• Nails removed by a series of magnets

• Three stage grinding process• Nails removed by a series of magnets and a

metal detector• July 18, 2006 observation by Mn/DOT and

Hennepin County• RAS stockpiled for a month prior to use.

“Fluffed” immediately prior to use in HMA plant.

Omann Paving

• August 22, 2006, Omann Brothers first graded and then compacted the gravel road in preparation for paving

• August 23, 2006, the base course of hot-mix asphalt was applied

• August 25 , 2006 the wear course was applied

Observations of Pavement Performance To-Date

• Mn/DOT has conducted two field surveys– March 2007– September 17, 2007

• Cracking– No observed pre-mature cracking

• Rutting– Using a FACE Dipstick®– Slight and irregular rutting with no significant

difference between mix types
