turning new years resolutions into all Year resolutions

by Sarah S. Jordan, MS

January is here, and so is the traditionof making NewYear’s Resolutions. Andmanytimes, thetraditionofbreakingthoseresolutions.Wefindourselvesexcitedandmotivated for the startof anewyear, andwithin a few months we often experiencefrustrationbecausewesimplycannotstickwiththeresolutionsweset.

I have been teaching fitness classes, personal training, and coordinatingfitnessprogramsforoveradecade,andIseeiteveryyear.GymsarepackedfromJanuarythroughMarch,andthenmanymembersjustseemtodisappearorgiveup.

Here is my question. What can we doto stick with exercise and making healthychoices for twelve months out of the yearinsteadofjustthree?Itisnoteasy, butlayingaproperandrealisticfoundationisthekey.Andrememberingthatifwedofalloffthewagon, weneedtohoprightbackonandnot give up. As I have outlined in someofmypreviousarticles, commitment, timemanagement, settingmeasurablegoals, andbeing realistic are all vital components tooursuccess.

Ifasedentaryandoverweightclientbeginstrainingwithmeandsays,“Mygoalistolose50poundsinfiveweeks,”thatclientissuretofailbeforesheevenbegins.Thatrateofweight loss is simplynothealthy, realistic,orlasting.However,ifthesameclientsays,“Mygoalistoworkoutthreedaysaweekfor20-50minuteseachtimeandasaresult,lose50poundsthisyear,”sheisofftoagreatstart!Thatgoalisspecific,measurable,attainable,realistic,andtime-bound.

PeopleoftenaskmewhatmyNewYear’sresolutions are, and to be honest, I don’treallysetthemanymore.Yousee…I,too, havesetresolutionsmanytimesinthepast,

and within weeks or months felt defeatedandgaveupbecausetheywerenotrealistic.Instead, I find myself setting little goalsthroughout the year, but they very rarelyincludenumbersonascale.

Setting“numbergoals”(ex:“Iwanttolose20poundsbyMay”)certainlyhasitsmerit,butIencouragemyclientstomovetowardsettingthe“HowcanIbecomeabetterandhappierperson/wife/mother?”typeofgoals.AndwhylimitourselvestoJanuary?IfyoufindsomethingyouwanttodoorbecomeinMarch,setthatgoalrightthenandthere,andcreateaspecificplanofactionthatwillgetyouthere.Keepingapositiveandrealisticspinonourgoalsettingthroughouttheyearwill allow us to experience more success.Andthatiswhatmattersintheend,right?Feelingsuccessfulandimprovedbecauseofthethingswelearnalonglife’sjourney.

here are a Few tips to setting all year resolutions.• Set S.M.A.R.T. goals. They should be

specific,measurable, attainable, realistic,andtimely.

• FindwhatworksforYOU.If joiningagym is not realistic for you, find otheractivities, classes, andopportunities thatdon’tinvolveagymmembership.

• Get support. That could be a closefriend, spouse, personaltrainer, meetupgroup, orcoworker.Communicateyourgoals and have people in your cornercheeringyouon.

• Set goals that will better yourself andthosearoundyou.Ex:Thismonth,Iwillgoonmorewalkswithmychild. Thismonth,Iwillcleanupmyeating.Thismonth, I will start a gratitude journal. You will find that little changes equal

hugeimprovementsovertime.• If you set “number (weight) goals,”

remember that your beauty and worthdo not lie in the numbers on the scale.Healthyweightlossisslowandsteadyatarateofaboutonepoundperweek.Tolosejustonepoundperweek,youmustburn3,500 calories more than you consume, whichisnoeasytask.

• Keepinmindthatfitnessandhealtharea lifestyle -notaone-month trial. Anymovementisgoodmovement, andmanytimes, thehardestpartofexercise is justgettingitstarted.

• Nutrition is key. What goes intoyourmouthisjustasimportantastheexerciseyouget.

We are all beautiful and have so much to offer this world. Here is to an amazing 2011!
