INTRODUCTION TO NEW

TOPIC: The Grouchy

Ladybug

*What does the term

Connecting the size of the ani-mals to the ladybug

Learning that ladybugs eat aphids

Learning what it means to be grouchy

I start the lesson by showing the new book and reading the title. I ask students if they know what the term “Grouchy” means and we generate a brief discussion. I provide a definition and synonyms to the same word (grumpy, cross, moody, generally unhappy).

READ THE TEXT (I use a SQ3R system when reading the book -scan, question, read, respond, review). I ready the book with the students. I have an EFL class so I sequence the events using pictorial

representations AS I READ but you can leave this part for after the story as well.

AFTER THE BOOK

Use any of the visuals provided to create a board graphic

organizer/ visual display of the story plot

ASK Key Questions about Text and illicit sharing ideas

“Look at the pictures, what do you notice about the animals? about their size? How do you think the animal‟s size makes the ladybug feel?”

“What does the ladybug say after each encounter?” Why do you think she says that?

“Why do you think the ladybug was grouchy?” (this brings a lot of discussion from the students as they guess different scenarios)
