In an alcove of St. Josephs Hall, juniors placed and
decorated a christmas tree. Nearby, the junior class
hung a stocking dedicated to Jade Thompson 13, who
was seriously injured over Thanksgiving break in a car
accident.
The Junior Class hangs banners that serve as a back-
drop to Carol Night. The event was well attended.

said Travis Wof, 12 of his ast
Christmas Dcorating Night.
Th snior cass of 2012 wi

laving larg shos to ll.
Th winnrs of Christmas

coud b found working th

With th CHC exrss chug-

this cassic Christmas scn,
its not hard to s wh th

sto th night. Prsidnt Mar

prsidnt Chris Ryan 13 x-
cutd thir pan prfct, with

Though th juniors wr
victorious, it wasnt a compt
win for th cass. Amongst th
fings of bonding and hoi-
da chr, thr was somthing
missing. Jad Thompson, 13,
was in a car accidnt on No-
vmbr 23, aving hr in th
Intnsiv Car Unit with xtn-
siv injuris. Though hr condi-
tion is improving vrda, with
hr tims of consciousnss gt-

it is sti a waiting gam. Mm-
brs of th cass said that this
was Jads favorit tim of th

experiences. This entry is part two of Kelly McKays 12 diary.
Intern Diaries
Last smstr I had an intrviw with th vnt managr at
th Businss Journal and around th sam tim, I had anothr
intrviw for an intrn position at a markting and pubic r-
lations rm calld Hoola. Kim Richmond, th woman whohad tod m that th Phiadphia Businss Journa was ooking
for an intrn, tod m about this opportunit as w (s how
wll this ntworking thing works?). Originally I had lannd
on just having on intrnship and on during th summr,
but I dcidd to offr to work during th fall smstr whil
talking with th ownrs of Hoola. I ndd u gtting this
position for th fa smstr of m snior ar.
Iv only bn working at this pR and markting rm sinc
Sptmbr, but th diffrnc btwn this intrnship and m
rst on is drastic. Hoola is a comany run by thr womn
whr th ofc is abov a caf and nxt to an Irish ub on
20th Strt and Walnut Strt in philadlhia. Again, I ithrdriv or tak th train, twic a wk on Tusdas and Thurs-
days. My job is vry hands-on sinc it is a signicantly small-
r comany. At Th philadlhia Businss Journal I sat in a
cubic and quit tpd awa and foowd instructions; at
Hoola, I sit at a larg tabl with my bosss whr w only
discuss anthing and vrthing, whthr it appis to businss
or our socia ivs.
M obigations ar much diffrnt too. M main dut is to
do dai Facbook and Twittr posts for crtain cints. For
xaml, for a win distributor comany that w work with,
I must ost an intrsting story about win along with a fw
osts a day on which win w ar currntly slling. I also crat
databass for mdia contacts, simiar to th Businss Journa,
but I hav much mor frdom hr to do what I think would
bnt our comany. Th atmoshr is much mor casual
(I can war jans!) and I fl lik I can b myslf around th
ol I work with.
Im assuming this mans that I would rfr working for
a smar compan as opposd to a mor corporat compan
ik Th Phiadphia Businss Journa. This ma b bcaus
Hoola has a mor rlaxd and on work nvironmnt com-
ard to th Businss Journal. I also fl mor valuabl to a
smallr comany. At Hoola, I can tll that my oinions mat -
tr to m co-workrs, and th ar awas ooking for m ad-
vic on crtain things prtaining to th businss.
A in a, whn tring to dcid whthr to tak on a scond
intrnshi, I say DO IT! Youll larn a lot about yourslf and
what kind of businss atmosphr works bst for ou. you
aso gt th chanc to mt som grat pop who ma b
ab to hp ou gt a job in th futur. Athough it ma sm
unfortunat that ou ar doing a ot of work, oftn tims for
no ay (lik m), its worth it. I larnd that I robably dont
want to pan vnts for a iving and that sitting in a cubic for
svn to ight hours a da isnt going to work for m. Aso, two
intrnships awas ooks bttr than just on on our rsum.
So, wh not?

The streets are cold, andthe beats are warm in hip-hoprecording artist Wales new al-bum Ambition, which dropped
on November 1st. This is thesecond studio album by Waleand a hit on the billboard charts.
His mixtape, One ElevenOne, left many disappointedthis summer; they felt it wastoo commercial, but this al-bum brought back any fans that
were previously let down. Witha style much different than hismixtape material, Wales rstalbum turned off a lot of fansthat he had earned with his rsthighly regarded The Mixtape
About Nothing and Back to the
Feature. A lot has changed since
Wales rst album dropped. Most notably, he left Interscopeand signed with Rick RosssMaybach Music Group. His oldlabel limited his creativity andkept him from making the typeof music he wanted to make.Listening to Ambition, fans cantell that he now expresses him-self in the way he wants to. Ashis cover song says, They gonlove me for myAmbition.
This album is made for the
mainstream hip-hop audienceand has great wordplay to im-press all his fans on a lyricalstandpoint. Another strengthof the album is the fact that its
almost entirely all Wale. Many
artists today tend to release
feature heavy records to draw
from other fan bases and push
their label mates. This record
is remarkably cohesive lyrically.
He has feature artists such as
his boss, Rick Ross and MMGs
own Meek Mills and Big Seanbut all of the other albums fea-
tures are singers on the hooks.
His new songs all have a dif-
ferent are, they set off from
unforgettable beats to up-tem-
po R&B rhythm. Wale uses
his own personal experiences
to make the songs touch the
hearts of his listeners.
His songs not only attract
the male but also female audi-
ence. He speaks out to the la-
dies on Sabotage Love and
relays a message that ladies canruin their relationship by living
in the moment.
His songs have the feel of
a live band but are really back-
ground music and drum pat-
terns put together to create an
amazing sound. The beats in his
music are grabbing to the hip-
hop audience and make them
hard to stop listening to.
Wales songs all leave his lis-
teners with a moral in the end,
including a point that he wants
to get across to his audiencethat will touch them personally.
WalesAmbitionCD shows him
as a soft rapper. I give him 5 out
of 5 stars and can say it is a CD
that I cannot stop listening to.

Television actor, DonaldGlover, is not only a star on theshow Community, he is also ahip-hop/rap artist. For the pastfew years Glover, also known asChildish Gambino, has releaseda few songs. Even though thesesongs were not known by muchof the public, they still caughtthe attention of Donald Gloverfans. Some of these songs in-cluded Lights Turned On,Break (All of the Lights) andeven samples of Adele. Thesesongs were compiled togetherin an underground musicalcompilation, also known as amixtape.
The songs proved thatGambino has what it takes tobe a serious artist. The onlyproblem was that his image didnot t the ideal description of
what a rapper should look like,by American standards. Gambi-no enunciates and pronouncesevery world correctly and hedoes not wear ashy and gaudyjewelry. Not only does he havea creative mind lyrically, he alsouses the things that people teaseabout his appearance and pokes
fun at himself in some of hislyrics.
The rumor that Childish
Gambino was working on analbum oated around for a longtime. The rumor turned outto be true and he released hisrst single entitled Freaks andGeeks. The song is a fan favor-ite because it has no chorus orhook, which proved that Gam-bino could carry his own as aserious artist. For the song, hecreated a simplied ofcial mu-sic video which entailed Gam-bino in a warehouse.
After many discovered thealbum release news, ChildishGambino revealed that the al-bum was called Camp. Shortlyafter, he released the secondsingle from the album calledBonre. This song did havea catchy hook. Although Gam-bino used a lot of unnecessarysexual references, it is still a de-cent song. He created a videofor it as well that took place at
what looked as if it were an out-door stay-away summer camp.
This video was even better thanthe last because it was more cre-ative. Gambino took the char-acter of a person who died atCamp Gambino and the ur-
ban legend had been told by a
camp counselor to a bunch of
girls sitting around a campre.
It became apparent that the
release date for Camp was go-
ing to be November 15, 2011,
which was also been the release
date of rapper, Drakes, new al-
bum. About a week prior to the
release date, Gambino leaked
his album because Drakes al-
bum had been leaked as well.
The beauty about the leak was
that, initially, people had to payfor it. The album is fantastic,
it is everything that fans ex-
pected and more. The album
showcased who Gambino really
is as an artist because he was
being himself the entire time.
Not only could you see Child-
ish Gambino as an artist, you
could also see the remnants of
Donald Glover. The album was
number two on the iTunes al-
bum charts, coming in second
to Drake. I prefer Camp over
Drakes sophomore album,
Take Care, but because Drakehas had a longer career and has
a larger fan base, Drake received
most of the attention. Honest-
ly, his album should have come
second to Gambinos.

Every so often, I play someof my original acoustic folk
at a bar in my one man band,
Crazy Kyle and the Folk Re-
vival. Through my musical
travels, I have come across
some pretty incredible bands.
A few weeks back, I openedup for a band at the Holly-
wood Tavern in Jenkintown,
PA called The New Thirty.
The three-piece power pop/
rock band also sports an im-
pressive collection of coversfrom bands such as Lit and
TNT.
Based out of central New
Jersey, these guys know how
to put on a good show for
the crowd. Singer/guitar-
ist, Jimmy Orfe, belts out
melodies that sound familiar
to grunge bands from back
in the 90s while Joe Harris
pounds bass notes into sub-
mission. Another interest-
ing musician from The New
Thirty is drummer, Jeffrey
Bartelt. Bartelt has a very
distinct playing style where
he holds his drum sticks like
chop sticks and plays incred-
ibly fast on the drums, whilestill playing in time with the
other members.
The New Thirty has a rare
style and is denitely worth a
listen or two. If you are any-
where near the Hollywood
Tavern in Jenkintown, PA
on Nov. 5, come check them
out for yourself. If this date
somehow slips your mind
then go and check them out
on Facebook or MySpace to

Yikes. Our old favorites such asGlee, Modern Family, andThe Ofce were back andbetter than ever. However threenewcomers were shining brightin the year of the rabbit.
American Horror StoryA man in a latex suit, ghosts
freely roaming, and countlessmurders. That is AmericanHorror story in a nutshell.Surprisingly, the man behindthis horror-drama is none otherthan Ryan Murphy, also, theman who brought us the popu-lar teen musical/drama/com-edy Glee. The show centers onthe Harmon family who movedto Los Angeles. The Harmonsmove into an old house nick-
named Murder House which
has a sordid history and possi-bly, supernatural powers. Asidefrom dealing with indelity, adifcult pregnancy, and a de-pressed teenage daughter, theHarmons also have to deal withthe cast of ghosts that inhabittheir home. The show is remi-niscent of Lost where thereare multiple questions and verylittle answers. American Hor-ror Story is indeed a mind-trip. Ill just be patiently waitinghere for an American HorrorStory/Glee crossover epi-sode.
New Girl This comedy series follows
Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day(not be confused with the CHCalum). After she nds her boy-friend cheating on her, she isforced to move in with threemen who at rst, do not take aliking to her. The men nd Jessconstant singing and alwayscheerful disposition annoying.
But after a while, the guys warmup to her and they all becomelike a family. Unlike the roommates, the television audience
warmed up to New Girl im-mediately. The show was thehighest rated Fall debut on Fox.
2 Broke Girls The series set in Williams-
burg, Brooklyn follows two waitresses (Kat Dennings andBeth Behrs) as they struggleto raise money for their fu-ture cupcake shop. Berhs playsthe Paris Hilton-esque charac-ter who is forced to work at adiner after her father is sent tojail for fraud. She is left penni-less. Dennings character is thejaded waitress who has workedat the diner for years. The showis essentially an updated female
version of the Odd Couple. However, if you are looking fora cheap laugh to get throughthe blahs of a Monday night, 2Broke Girls will do just that.

When someone puts to-

self publishing authors, H.P.
Mallory, on top of the polls.
Recently picked up by Random
House Publishing, H.P. Mallory
rst began self publishing in
2010, with To Kill a Warlock the
rst in her Dulcie ONeil series.
One of the best older books on
the self publishing markets and
popular when it rst came out,
To Kill a Warlock deserves the at-
tention of many.
Dulcie ONeil, a fairy and
regulator for the Netherworld
Police Force, only has one agen-
da: to keep the human citizens
of the Splendor, California safe
from illegal netherworld activ-
ity. When a warlock is murdered
and Dulcie was the last to see
him alive, she falls under sus-
picion. With the help of hand-
some investigator, Knightly
Vander, Dulcie continues work-
ing the case. But between bat-
tling shape-shifting creatures, a
devious vampire, and her heart,
Dulcie is ghting one of hergreatest battles yet: herself.
A quick read, To Kill a War-
lock pulls in the reader, hook-
lines-and-sinker into the world
of Dulice ONeil, one of the
best regulators around. H.P.
Mallory does not just stop there
with the her great books, she
continues on with Tales of Two
Goblins and newly released
Great Hexpectations for the

are in preparation. Her addi-

Looking for Alaska, by nota-
ble young-adult author, popular
YouTube gure, and co-cre-ator of a charity group called
Nerdghters, John Green, tellsthe captivating tale of Miles
Pudge Halter, an adolescent
with a thing for both last words, and a girl named Alaska.
Looking for Alaska, a New
York Times Best seller, is mostknown for the quote, if people
were rain, I was drizzle and shewas a hurricane. At the start of
the novel, Miles decides to at-
tend the Culver Creek Boarding
School so that he can search forthe Great Perhaps, a phrasefrom a Francois Rabelais poem.
On his rst day, he meets the
Colonel, his roommate, and Alaska, an intelligent, quirky
beauty in cut-off jeans and apeach tank top.
The novel is divided into
before and after. The rst 133pages are devoted to what oc-
curred before, which con-sists of Pudge and the gang
getting kicked out of sporting
events, blatantly disobeying
school rules, and pulling intri-
cately thought out pranks. Gen-
erally, it depicts fun-loving teen-
agers doing what they do best,
with the exception of Alaskassometimes brooding, angst and
death-lled thoughts. One of
Alaskas musings during these
moments of deep thought is
the concept of Bolivars laby-
rinth of life and how to escape
it. These comments foreshad-
ow the after segment of the
novel: Alaskas death, after she,
apparently randomly, gets into
her car after a night of drink-
ing, and crashes into a stopped
police car on the highway. Af-terward, Miles and the Colo-
nel question whether it was asuicide or not.
Overall, this is an exceed-
ingly striking novel. It covers
the deeply emotional topic of
young death and the questionof intentional death. This novel
was so emotional because, as
Miles searches for forgiveness
and deals with feelings of guilt
and grief over Alaskas death,
the reader feels the same sense
of deep loss. The reader canfeel Alaska beginning to open
up to Miles, but then she ulti-
mately slips away. Greens lan-
guage truly causes the reader
to feel pain, but in a beautiful
way. Without personally experi-
encing death to this degree, theway it is written still causes the
reader to feel the raw emotions
in as real a way as possible.
Looking for Alaskais for any-
one interested in a captivating,
comedic, and yet deeply emo-
tional read. It causes the reader
to think of concepts such as
the labyrinth that we are all in,
and the possibility of a Great
Perhaps. This novel brings a
unique outlook to the subject
of the death of not just a loved
one, but the death of a poten-
tial true love.

Any baseball fan who isfamiliar with the sports his-
tory should know how Jackie
Robinson broke the color bar-
rier by being the rst African
American to play in the major
leagues. This did not seem to
mean much to Joseph Burke,
the WWII veteran and Guadal-
canal survivor who was hired
by the manager of the Brook-
lyn Dodgers to be Robinsons
bodyguard. However, he dis-
covered and appreciated the
signicance when the pair be-
gan attracting media attentionand were forced to deal with the
ugliness and cruelty of a small-
minded world and found that
the results could be dangerous.
Double Play is a fast read
that keeps the readers atten-
tion from beginning to end.
Though this is a completely c-
tional story, it is believable. One
may even wonder whatever
happened to Joseph Burke. I
have heard some people tried to
Google him thinking the story
was true. The book does have
some historical accuracy and isa really enticing trip into a time
where the dangers of racial dis-crimination are just an everydaypart of living.
It is also quite interesting todelve into the mind of a man
who has been through the hellof a major war and survived alife-threatening injury. Whatkind of issues was he dealing
with? How did he go on liv-ing a normal life? What will hedo now? These are questionsBurke really put off answeringthroughout the whole book, but soon found himself face toface with the very issues he wastrying to avoid.
I truly enjoyed reading thisbook because there was never amoment that I was bored. I didnot fall asleep while reading itand I even had to force myselfto put it down and go to bed.
Although I do not know any-thing about baseball or being a
veteran, there were a few thingsI could relate to. Growing up,I had a grandfather who was a
veteran and he would tell mestories about the war. Readinghis stories made me understand
Burkes character a bit more.

Every year the media isfueled by new music, mov-
ies and scandals. As 2011
comes to a close, I wouldlike to highlight (in no par-
ticular order) some pop cul-ture moments that stoodout to me.
1. Harry Potter andthe Deathly Hallowspt. 2
On July15 , muggles from
all over ocked to theatersto see the nal installment
of the Harry Potter movies.
The decade long battle be-tween the boy who lived and
he-who-must-not-be-named
came to a close on the bigscreen, and Im not gonna
lie, as a Harry Potter enthu-
siast, it was a bit emotional.
2. R.I.P. Amy Wine-house
On July 23, British song-
stress, Amy Winehouse,
passed away. It was laterfound that the cause of her
death was alcohol poison-
ing. While some may arguethat she was best known for
her wild antics and massive
beehive hair, there is no de-
nying that Amy had an incred-ible talent and will be missedby fans as well as the music
industry.
3. Lady Gaga furtherproved she is insane
Known for her perplexing-ly creative music videos, it was
a shocker when her video forEdge of Glory was seem-ingly uncomplicated. Somethought maybe she was turn-ing over a new, less confusingleaf; but then she released the
video for You and I. We sawGaga as a mermaid, Gaga asa man, and Gaga dancing ina manger all to the tune ofa song which is about a lovestory in Nebraska. On August28, Gaga attended the MTV
Video Music Awards dressedas the male character from the
video, Jo Calderone. She re-mained in costume the wholenight and referred to herself(Lady Gaga) in third person. Is Gaga a misunderstood art-ist, or just a woman goingthrough an identity crisis? Wemay never know
4. Beyonce is preg-nant... or is she?
The announcement ofBeyonces pregnancy was fol-lowed by a whirlwind of con-troversy. For various reasons,
there was speculation as to whether or not her babybump was real. Despite allthe rumors, with such a tal-ented gene-pool, this baby issure to be a future superstar.
5. Occupy WallStreet
This year, the Occupyprotests became the big-gest trend for pseudo-hippies who are upset thatthey missed out on the 60s.
While the issues being ad-dressed by the movementare valid, the execution hasbeen sloppy. Protest signsare lled with so many de-mands that there isnt justone institution to protest.Im sure it started with goodintentions, but it turned intosomething thats hard to
take seriously. I heard frompeople who went to the pro-test in Philly that it felt likea party in some parts. Peo-ple were showing up andhanging out as if they weretailgating a sporting event.College students who aresupposedly upset abouttheir student debt skippedclasses to occupy cities.
What does that help? Nowyoure behind in classes andyou still have loans to payback. Look at you go.

The 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic continues thetradition established by theNHL, of hosting a regular-season game outdoors. At theonset of the new year and tocelebrate the origin and tradi-tions of hockeys original roots, they will play in Philadelphia atCitizens Bank Park, the home
of the Phillies. The stadium that is equated with Philly red between Aprilthrough October will be packed
with enthusiastic black and or-ange hockey sweaters for therst time. The baseball eld willbe cut in half and will have afull size outdoor ice rink placedin the middle of the stadium, just as if the game were beingplayed on an outdoor pond.
The Philadelphia Flyers willbe hosting the New York Rang-ers on Monday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m.
ET. The game will be broad-casted live on NBC. This is thebiggest event, besides the Stan-ley Cup for the NHL, and hasbrought in great ratings the pastfew years. This will be the rsttime the event is hosted in Phil-adelphia, and the second timein as many years for the Flyersto be participating.
The Rangers-Flyers rivalry
is one of our very best, saidGary Bettman, NHL Commis-sioner. It is only a short dis-tance from Broadway to BroadStreet, and over the years, thesenot-so-neighborly teams haveprovided an assortment ofmemorable games. I have ev-ery expectation that the 2012Bridgestone NHL Winter Clas-sic will provide more great mo-ments to remember.
Division rivals since the
197475 season, the Rangersand Flyers become the closestgeographic rivals to compete inthe Bridgestone NHL WinterClassic, and like all other rival-ries involving New York andPhiladelphia sports teams, thisis a heated match up.
The 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic in Pittsburghon NBC Sports aired in prime-time and was the most-watchedNHL regular season game inthe U.S. in 36 years with an av-erage of 4.5 million viewers.
For the second consecu-tive year, the NHL will part-ner with HBO Sports and itsgroundbreaking 24/7 real-ity franchise. As it did with thePittsburgh Penguins and Wash-ington Capitals last year, thefour-episode, all-access series
will provide viewers an exclu-sive behind-the-scenes look atboth teams, along with in-depth
interviews with players, coaches
and front-ofce personnel. All
of this will happen as the teams
compete during the NHL regu-
lar-season, including a Dec. 23
match up between the teams at
Madison Square Garden. Im
not even much of a hockey fan
at all, says Yannick Wallace, a
senior at CHC, but this is an
event I will actually be watch-
ing.
The premiere HBO episode
debuts in prime time, Wednes-day, Dec. 14, at 10 p.m. ET,
with new episodes debuting
each successive Wednesday at
10 p.m. ET. Many fans have
expressed the HBO series to
be the best part of the whole
event, showing the hard work
and preparation that is involved
inside the locker room and
practice, and giving an all access
pass for fans to see and hear
what players go through on and
off the ice.
The event will also be host-
ing a Legends Game prior to
the game, having some of the
legends of the past such as Eric
Lindros and John Leclair com-
ing back for a game. This is a
must see event for any sports
enthusiast, not just hockey fans.
It will be the magnitude of a
game being played outdoors in
the Winter.

Cliff Lee. With many people
expecting Lee to be in another
set of pinstripes in the foresee-
able future, the Phillies signing
him was one of the biggest sur-
prises and, as many said, was a
Christmas present to the team.
Inked to a ve year deal with a
guaranteed $120M and the pos-
sibility to earn up to $135M, the
signing was also a nice presentto the pitcher who never want-
ed to be traded from Philly in
the rst place.
So with two mega off-sea-
sons and the Phillies acquisi-
tion of two of baseballs best
pitchers, it was a wonder what
Amaro would do this year. The
off-season for the Phillies start-
ed with two big questions: SS
[shortstop] Jimmy Rollins and
RP [relief pitcher] Ryan Mad-
son. Both players were at the
end of their contracts and both
looked to be primed for a big
payday.
Other than these two free
agents, the Phillies were faced
with expiring contracts for
back-up catcher Brian Schnei-
der, LF [leftelder] Raul Ibanez,
RHP [right handed pitcher] Roy
Oswalt and former closer Brad
Lidge. So far the Phillies de-
clined their options on Oswalt
and Lidge but it is not out of the
question that either or both ofthese players could return. The
Philies offered Ibanez arbitra-
tion but he has yet to accept or
decline and they have re-signed
Schneider to a one year deal.
In addition to these moves, the
Phillies also traded for utility
player Ty Wigginton, who can
play rst, third or the outeld
positions, giving the Phillies
much needed depth. They also
signed former beloved Phillie,
Jim Thome, to a one year deal.
Although none of these moves

are blockbuster, Ruben wasnot done. Matching his pastof signing the big name to the
big contract, the Phillies inkeda $50M deal with former RedSox closer, Jonathon Papelbon, making him the highest paidcloser in baseball history andthe newest star to sport red and
white pinstripes. The contractfor Papelbon came on the heelsof rumored announcementsthat the Phillies had agreed to a$44M deal with Ryan Madson.
Although the Madson deal wasnot true, Amaro has said thatthe Phillies got their man and
the one they wanted all along isAll-Star closer Papelbon.
With baseballs winter meet-ings underway and the monthof December upon us, it is onlynatural to wonder what Amaro
still has up his sleeve. With deci-sions left to be made, positionsleft to ll and somehow, some-
way, the payroll left to ll them,Ruben Amaro and the Phillies
can still make a splash and bringa marquee player to Philly, per-haps Mets SS Jose Reyes if the
team parts with Rollins? If thepast has only taught Philliesfans one thing it is this: dontever count out Ruben Amaroand the Phillies to do some-thing big in December. That is
the month after all that broughtLee and Halladay to Philly andby all indications it could bebringing another big name herefor the 2012 season.

For months, students allover campus were asking thequestion: Where is the Grif-
n?The Colleges most beloved
mascot had been missing fromsporting events leaving many
students wondering wherehe went. Finally, after a fewmonths of searching, the Grif-
n was found doing what he hasalways done best... engaging thestudents and staff at the college
in a spirit-lled way. He wasspotted at the grand opening ofthe Colleges new tness centerdoing what promises to be the
rst of many work outs neededto get in shape for a long seasonof cheering the Colleges sports
teams to victory. The Grifns location was
unknown for some time and, asa result, rumors surfaced that
the colleges old mascot cos-tume was stolen by an unknownstudent at the College. The
truth, however, as conrmed byDirector of Student ActivitiesEmily Schademan, was that the
Grifn was never lost or stolenand that the costume was sittingin the back of a storage closet. The old Grifn was just falling
apart, said Schademan whenasked why the costume hadbeen shelved. We decided it
was time for another Grifn. With a brand new idea in
mind, the Student ActivitiesOfce went to work on creat-
ing the mystery surrounding theappearance of the new Grifn.
The idea to say that the Grifn
was missing created mystery andexcitement among the studentsand was fueled by posts on the
student run blog, 75 Acres ofAwesome and on twitter where
the Grifn reported that he wasjust taking some time off. Stu-dent Activities created a cam-
paign for the Missing Grifn, and in conjunction with thecolleges marketing rm 160/90
and Marketing Director GillianChaplan, helped to create thenew look of the Grifn.
The unveiling of the re-
vamped Grifn at the grandopening of the new tnesscenter was a natural decision.
160/90 and Student Activitiesdetermined that what better a
way to nd the new and im-
proved Grifn than workingout at the new gym, preparinghimself for a long season ofCHC activities?
In addition to the Grifnsnew look, the person to fulllthe mascot duties will also be
brand new. The College heldtryouts for students looking
to occupy the new costumefor the year and sports season.
Although the tryouts were anopen event for all students to
witness, part of the mystery
around the Grifn will be thehidden identities of who ex-actly is the Grifn. This year
we want the identities of ourstudents playing our mascot tobe hidden, but we did hire threestudents Schademan said.
We want someone to en-gage and excite the crowd, said Megan Cranney, Assistant
Director of Student Activities, someone who has a lot of spir-it. With the three new hires,
Student Activities believes theyhave found students able todo just that. In addition to thestudents in the costume, Stu-
dent Activities is encouragingall students to think of what toname the new Grifn, to make
it more personal to the school.Students can create the names
Ls Giffin, Nw Fund wih New Ideniythey want and post them on the
colleges website. Then students
can choose what name they like
the best, ultimately giving a new
personality for the mascot cur-
rently known as Grifn.
So the Grifn who posted
on 75 Acres of Awesome that
he was reecting and re-eval-
uating his life, is ready to once
again become part of the fabric
of life here at Chestnut Hill Col-
lege. You can spot the Grifn at
certain sporting events, family
weekends, and at other College
events. The Grifn will also be
making a special appearance at
the Christmas decorating night,
so keep your eyes peeled and
dont be surprised if you run
into him around campus!

Dont you miss it? If you do,

Grifn Nation was created
Students Unite Under Griffin Nationby the womens basketball teamas a way to unify, not just all of
the sports team, but the entire
college community. Womens
Basketball Coach Laura Pruitt
encourages her team to buy
into the system, buy into col-

After watching the movie,
Mighty Macs, which is based
on the real life story of the
1971-72 Immaculata College
team that started as underdogs
but became the rst Cinderella
story in womens basketball, the
Lady Grifns were inspired.
We hope that Grifn Nation
will bring those who participate
in college athletics with those
who do not, forming a union-
a nation, says captain Ebony
Washington, who hopes the
movement can ll the seats in
Sorgenti Arena for the womens
team. If you take away athlet-

There has also been a twit-

team is selling Grifn Nation

in the future, they hope to sell

Ebony Washington hopes
to win over her fellow Grif-

If you think that just be-cause the playoffs and regularseason are over that means that
baseball is over, think again. Ashas been proven in years pastand especially when it comesto the Phillies, the baseball off-season can be almost as excitingas the season itself. Coming offof a very disappointing end tosuch a promising season, fansare all asking: What is Rubengoing to do this year?
In the past two years wehave seen the Phillies do someincredible things afer the endof the baseball season. In 2009,the Phillies were at the center of
a three team trade where Phil-lies pitcher Cliff Lee was tradedto the Seattle Mariners and RoyHalladay of the Blue Jays wastraded to the Phillies. A handfulof prospects and cash consid-erations were also involved, butthe big story of the off-seasonsurrounded the Phillies andhow they traded one Cy Young
Award Winner for another. While in 2012 we saw the Phil-lies part with star RF [rightelder] Jayson Werth, we alsosaw them make a blockbuster
free agent signing when bring-ing Cliff Lee back to Phila-delphia. After a stellar season
which almost resulted in aWorld Series Championship forthe Texas Rangers, Lee was themarquee free agent on the ma-ket. The Rangers were vying tore-sign him but it seemed cer-
tain he would wind up in aNew York Yankees uniform asthey were offering the moneyand the years to make the dealhappen. There were rumblingsthat the Phillies wanted to bringLee back and that they were theundisclosed team in pursuit ofthe pitcher, but with an evergrowing payroll it seemed im-possible.
Then, out of nowhere, Phil-lies GM [general manager] Ru-ben Amaro emerged and tookto the podium surprising thePhiladelphia media, fans andbaseball enthusiasts everywherethat the newest player would be
