• 1996 - Dropped out of Stanford- First office in Menlo Park

• From BackRub to “Googol” (Misspelled as Google)

• 1999 - Venture Capital Kleiner Perkins and Sequioa Capital.

• Appointing the CEO – Eric Schimidt.

THE 20 PERCENT RULE• Employees can spend 20% of their time on whatever projects that interests them.

•It was a new concept but it had a precedent that was 3M who asked it employees to spend 15 % of their time.

•Larry and Brin got inspiration for this idea from universities.

The 20 percent rule People are more productive for things they have invented or they are passionate about.

When the idea matures people share it through bulletin boards on Google’ s internal computer network.

The company has also set aside time for peer reviews.

When an idea blossoms, Google provides resources. "At Google, if something is worth doing, it gets funded”

CLUSTERING he categorized news Into different categories such as sports politics etc.

• Ranked the news based on their authenticity.

• Made sure every small news was also included.

• Ranked fresher news first over older news.

NEVIL MANING AND FROOGLE

• Was attracted to Google because of its 20% rule.

• Contributed to Google's online retailing.Did not get accepted right away. He had to improve it.

• He used to walk in Sergey’s room often to tell him new features and eventually the idea got accepted.

CAN 20% RULE WORK IN ALL ORGANIZATIONS?

The birth of GmailProblems with emails were: •Find and retrieve old emails.• AOL deleted emails after 30 days to reduce down costs.• either store them on PC which would slow it down• Or pay the firm for additional storage.

Hence came in Gmail• Inspiration came from a Google user who complained about

the poor service of existing services.

THE “WOW” FACTOR WAS • It had 1GB of free storage.

A BAD APRIL FOOL’S JOKE

• On 1st April they announced their new service.• To make money they decided to display ads on Gmail that

would be “ contextually relevant”• A gross unwarranted invasion of privacy

• Google might be forced to use content scanning in the service of government.

GOOGLERS ARE HUNGRY!

•45 googlers, most of them in their twenties, were thought to be delighted by brin & page to give them motivation to work more passionately.

•Contrary to the traditional style, they came up with the idea of playing different tricks to the Googlers' palates.

•the idea that captured employees’ hearts. they decided to have the best kitchen that money could buy.

•Hired on November 17, 1999,after trying out 25 chefs, Charlie Ayers the head chef who was in his thirties was considered as one of the oldest googlers.

•his ideas were huge. instead of introducing burgers, hot dogs etc which people were expecting, he introduced something very healthy.

•until 10 minutes before the lunch, the menu was never put out. the rationale behind this was, Sergey wanted to keep the employees motivated, keeping their productivity high and encouraging them to come in every day not knowing what actually is going to be served.

Sergey called it a "PERK WITH A PURPOSE"

WHY?

"PERK WITH A PURPOSE"

•because it would create a sense of TOGETHERNESS

•it would keep them near one another and their desks

•prevent them form developing poor eating habits that would diminish their productivity

•eliminate the time they would otherwise spend going out to lunch and worrying over plans.

and it worked very well. employees motivation was sky-high. everybody had a sense of purpose and teamwork.

Look at what we did instead of look at me.

•Charlie had freedom to hire additional cooks to assist him.

•This made him empowered which ultimately translated in to every employee’s performance.

•Every one was working for one GOAL. To make this company succesful.

to warm things up for new comers at Google Charlie used to make all kind of finger food.Sergey while introducing Google to them used to tell this to every NOOGLER that

“ you are getting paid to try something new to eat.”
