May 14: Industrial Spaces to Public Parks
Presented in partnership with ReNew Canada
Toronto has a vast network of infrastructure corridors—some in use, some abandoned—with the
potential for reuse. Unused rail corridors like New York’s High Line are commonly repurposed as
public spaces and Toronto has had similar success with its Rail Path, a favourite route of cyclists
and joggers. Beltline and linear parks could turn old rights-of-way into multi-use public spaces,
creating new parks for city dwellers, taking the pressure off busy roads by providing a separate
route for cyclists, and even incorporating agricultural uses.

Newsletter Spotlight The future of the CNE
The OALA has a member representative on the Canadian
National Exhibition Association (CNEA). Information on the CNE
site’s future has been requested for distribution to membership.
Council discussed this information at their May 13, 2013 Council
meeting. The OALA Council takes no formal position on the
issue, but agreed to share this information to all OALA members.
Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) is looking for a casino
site in the greater Toronto Area. Two (2) specific locations
are being considered: Waterfront (CNE) and Woodbine Race
Track;
OLG is looking to the City of Toronto, to vote yes or no, for a
casino in Toronto;
One proponent (MGM) is looking to established a 3 million
square foot casino on the CNE (Canadian National
Exhibition) grounds;
CNE Board has met with MGM and reviewed their
proposal. The CNE Board does not support a casino at the
CNE, as it will require lands that would see significant
change to the current CNE grounds. A casino would also
impact other events that annually take place at Exhibition
Place (Winter Fair, Royal and Sportsmen shows).
CNE Board believes that there are better community
redevelopment opportunities at Exhibition Place.
CNE Board is seeking support from their members, that
Exhibition Place not be the location for the proposed casino.
Toronto City Council will be debating the issue on May 21,
2013. The CNE Board is asking member organizations to
support their decision, that the casino not be located at
Exhibition Place. Member organizations can advise the city
directly or through councilors in a formal position.

U of G: Seeing Student Designs Come to Life
In 2015, the Town of Penetanguishene’s will celebrate the historic landing of Samuel de
Champlain on their community’s shores 400 years ago on August 1, 1615. To commemorate
this, and the fact that the town is one of the oldest in Canada west of Quebec City, the town
formed a Champlain Penetanguishene committee which will oversee the celebrations. For
inspiration, the committee invited the class of BLA students to re-imagine the town’s waterfront
and downtown space as a class project.
Throughout the Winter 2013 semester, students worked in groups to create master plan
concepts for the revitalization of Penetanguishene's waterfront park. Under the guidance of
Professor Stefan Bolliger and two other instructors, Nadia Amoroso and Shirley Hall from the
School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) the BLA students pitched 10
proposal concepts to the community in early April.

The Editorial Board of GROUND magazine has selected GeoGarden (A Subterranean
Symphony in C) by Karen Abel with a soundscape by Rose Bolton as the winner of the
Gladstone Grow Op 2013 OALA/Ground Prize.
GeoGarden - “C” for crystal - is a landscape of geological time, a subterranean ‘secret garden’
exposed as an outcropping of relic violin cases, their interiors propagated with mineral salt
crystals of the octahedral structure, a form in sacred geometry meaning ‘seed of life’.
As if excavated from a primordial orchestra pit of the imagination, the rock-like forms suggest
crystal geodes - time capsules unlocked to reveal pristine micro-landscapes like sheet music of
millennial age. In this garden of vacant instrumentation, violin sounds seismically evoke events of
a geological past through the use of fragmented musical textures and distant melodies. Visitors
are invited to consider the concept of a garden within geological time; to experience the virtually
imperceptible process of geode crystallization through the act of listening, where a single note
might convey a thousand or ten thousand years.
This $500 award recognizes a unique work that encouraged us all to celebrate and explore new
dialogues about landscape, art, gardens and place making.
