Stewardship
Nurses from Community Health Professional Visiting Nurses will give flu and pneumonia shots at First Church on Sunday, October 25th at the 8:45 and 11:45 a.m. No charge with Medicare Part B card (make sure you bring your card), $30 for flu shots and $35 for pneumonia shot for all persons 18 years old and older. Ques-tions call the church office (419-238-o631, ext. 0). Thank you.
On Sunday, October 11th we will kick off our annual stewardship cam-paign for the church operating budget. This year’s theme is “Faith in Action” and our key verse is James 2:17 “…faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Over the next few weeks we will be sharing in worship about the minis-try of the church and the role we all play in supporting First Church. You will also be receiving information in the mail, including a minis-try budget for 2010 and pledge slips. We hope you will prayerfully consider your financial support for our church in the coming year. The Administrative Board, Finance Committee, and Staff-Parrish Relations Committee will all be meeting through the end of the year to determine how we can best meet the ministry needs of the church and community, with the resources at our disposal. You may rest assured that the staff and leadership of First Church will continue to be good stewards of those resources. James 2:26 tells us, “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” At First Church our actions proclaim that the Spirit is alive and well in the body of Christ. May faith be alive in you.

“The United Methodist Women at First Church have a reputation for a myriad of accomplishments, and as you read in last month’s sleuth report, one of their innovations has been the church library. Under the leadership and efforts of the likes of Bernice Davis, Eleanor Souders, and Susan Mathew, our congregation has two libraries of books for reading pleasure. When plans were drawn up in the 1990’s for the recent remodeling project, a room was designated as the Adult Library. Located on the main floor across from staff offices, it is a comfortably furnished and inviting room with hundreds of books and tapes. Fred Hartwig built the shelves which in themselves are worth stopping by to admire. The room was decorated by Joanne Thatcher of Elite Interiors, and a wood carving of Christ, done by Robert Bell in memory of his wife, Helen, hangs on the wall. Over the years, books have been purchased and donated, and a recent innovation in the library is Romaine Whetstone’s work to electronically catalogue the books. Romaine has set up a system in Excel which allows users to search for materials under title, author, subject, genre, and category. “Tracey Brake, Janet Bolton, and Louise Tingley have all been very helpful in this task,” Romaine volunteered. “I have loved doing it. It takes me back to the days when Merle and I were at Purdue, and I worked in the university library,” she quipped. “I’m thrilled that Romaine is converting the card catalogue to computers,” responded Eleanor Souders when the sleuth mentioned it to her. “I know it’s time for some books to be culled and
by Al Arnold
places to be made for the new ones. It’s been a long time since Bernice and I made the original cards,” she added. When the sleuth asked Romaine about her work in the adult library, she was just as enthused to talk about St Paul’s Library in The Uptown District. “What marvelous picture books are in the children’s library,” she began, “and the books for families who are raising young children are fabulous.” Whether you are preparing a Sunday School lesson, looking for daily devotional readings, looking for a good fictional read, looking for Christian books for your children, or just want to browse, the sleuth encourages you to take advantage of our church libraries. We salute those of you who have helped make them great.

Some things never change----------The following are 3 of 9 things from Teddy Roosevelt's "Nine reasons for going to church. " In this world, a churchless community, where men have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the downgrade." "Church work and church attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others."
"There are enough holidays for most of us. Sundays differ from other holidays in the fact that there are fifty-two of them each year - therefore, on Sundays, go to church. And then, some things never change.--------------- From the June 25, 1957 Friendly Visitor--------- Pledges are $8,000 short of meeting the budget for the fiscal year. Please help us complete the canvass by reporting to the office immediately. 6-7Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ dis-places worry at the center of your life.
Philippians 4:6 The Message
Be sure to check out the prayer nooks through out the church. There are prayer cards at each station for you to take with you and use during your prayer times. These cards cover a wide variety of subjects and I change them about once a month. Prayer nooks are located in Kraut, the Library and down by the Food Pantry. If you are looking for specific information on prayer, please see me. Any of our church staff are willing to pray with you at any time.

Youth Group info and updates for October! Teens and Parents and Everyone else,
Well, October is already here, fall is in full bloom! I love this time of the year. Why, because the weather makes me think of Football Friday Nights and the Buckeyes being in the National Championship game…whoops…doesn’t look like that one will happen…again. But it is still a great time of the year. And one of my favorite events of the year is in October. This event is The Halloween Bash for the Youth! This is a great event because everyone usually does all kinds of things for Halloween and what better opportunity to provide some outreach than to have a way cool event right here for our teenagers! We have our Fear Factor style eat off for the kids to watch as well as an exciting walk through for the kids to participate in and bring their friends. It was a huge success last year as we had almost 70 kids attend and hopefully we will have even more this time. This event is put on and sponsored by the youth counselors and the youth program here at First, but you could always partici-pate in some way if you wanted to…just ask Jon for details. So anyways, make sure if you are in the 7th-12th grades that you block off October 25th from 7-9 pm to attend the Bash. It will be an Awesome evening!

Children’s Page
The Sunday morning ministry has a new twist. On the first Sunday of each month, beginning October 4th, par-ents and children will meet in the dining room of the church for a combined session beginning at 9:30 a.m. Families (that’s mom and dad, too) with children of pre-schoolers through junior high are invited to come and experience a high energy fast paced introduction to “The Uptown District” rotation lesson and verse for the month. It is called “Bible Song.” The remaining 3 Sundays will have the preschool children in their classes, elementary children in rotation, the youth and parents in their re-spective classes. In this is a very exciting tool called “The Faith 5”. If you care to have some fun, keep your family communicating every night, and grow in your understanding of yourself and God, we urge you to try this simple five-step process see if it doesn’t help!

One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
A generous man will proper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
People curse the man who hoards grain, but blessing crowns him who is willing to sell it.
He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it.
